Fujinon MK18-55mm T2.9 Overview

The Fujinon MK18-55mm T2.9 Lens in E Mount is a lightweight cine-style zoom lens for E-mount cameras with a Super 35mm-sized sensor. It features a mechanical design with three independent lens control rings: focus, iris, and zoom. Each ring incorporates a cine-style gear with a 0.8 MOD for interfacing with standard cine -style lens accessories. The focus ring features approximately 200° of rotation, which provides room or precise focus pulls, and the iris is clickless, enabling smooth iris pulls. The lens also incorporates a macro mode for close focusing capabilities.

The lens is color matched to other Fujinon lenses such as the HK, ZK, and XK series, which enables smooth intercutting between lenses. The 85mm front enables use with many cine-style matte boxes via use of optional step up rings (rings not included). The lens weighs only 2.16 pounds, which is fairly light for a cinema zoom that holds focus and aperture throughout the focal length range. It is designed for camera's with a Sony E mount, so it has a short flange focal distance, but the lens allows for flange focal distance adjustment so you can fine tune it to the camera you are using the lens on.

T2.9 to T22 aperture with 9 iris blades for attractive bokeh
The 28.5mm diameter image circle covers the 3-perf super 35 format with a 16:9 aspect ratio
Industry standard 0.8 film pitch gears for focus, zoom, and iris control
The gear rings positions for focus, zoom, and iris are located at the same position on both lenses in the MK series, making switching between the two zooms quick as you don't have to adjust the position of lens accessories
Both lenses in the MK series have the same weight and length so here is no need to rebalance your camera when you change from one lens to the other
200° focus barrel rotation
No shims are required to adjust the flange focal distance as this lens has a built-in adjustment mechanism
Macro focus function available

question

This wont come out for a C300 mark II right?
Asked by: walter
You are correct. This lens is made for the short flange depth of the mirrorless E mount standard and is thus incompatible with the longer flange depth of the mirrored camera EF mount standard. The lens, even if you were to mount it, would therefore not be able to focus on the C300 sensor. It would be too close and focus it's picture somewhere behind the sensor's image plane. The nice thing for E mount users is how this lens is smaller, lighter and speaking to it's quality and features, relatively inexpensive.

question

Will they come out with a EF lens ?
Asked by: Paul
The great advantage of E mount is that it eliminates the need of making lenses that have to leave room in the optical path for a mirror. Thus the lenses are shorter, smaller in diameter and less costly to build. However, these same lenses, because they do not allow for that mirror distance from the sensor, cannot work on EF cameras. If you were to mount it, the lens would create its image on a plane in front of the sensor. In other words, the lens could not focus and your image is a big blur. So if Fujinon were to make a lens of this focal length for EF, it would be longer, wider and more expensive.

question

What prime lenses will color match this zoom? The overview states, The lens is color matched to other Fujinon lenses such as the HK, ZK, and XK series. But those are all zooms, it seems.
Asked by: Arthur
Yes, those are all zooms and at this time Fujinon is not making cine primes. My take on Fujinon lens color is that it is very, very neutral. Angenieux zooms are as well in my experience. Zeiss or Schneider primes are neutral with a blue tint whereas I find Cooke and Canon to be, pleasingly, on the red/yellow tint side. In the end, it will come down to the movie to be made and what it's look is going to be. Extensive testing will be used to determine this. If you are building a personal set, I would say that since the Fujinons are so neutral, all lenses would work with them with minor mis-match.

Does this cover any of the FX9's crop modes, like 5k?
Asked by: Brian
No, the Fujinon MK18-55mm T2.9 Lens (Sony E Mount) will not cover the full sensor when shooting in FFcrop 5K, as the sensor size is still greater than Super 35, all other crop modes such as Super35 / APS-C will work with the lens.

There are no differences between the Fujinon MK-R 18-55mm T2.9 Cine Zoom Lens (Canon RF Mount), the Fujinon MK18-55mm T2.9 Lens (Sony E Mount), and the Fujinon MK18-55mm T2.9 Lens (MFT Mount) besides the mount.

question

Could you use a 1.5x or 2x telephoto adapter on this lens?
Asked by: Matt
The 2x Sony teleconverter is not compatible, because the hole at the back of the lens is not wide enough to accomodate the piece that sticks out of the teleconverter.
