Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Art Overview

By B&H Photo's

A versatile zoom for everyday shooting, the Canon EF-mount 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Lens from Sigma covers a useful wide-angle to portrait-length range of focal lengths to suit shooting in a variety of environments. As part of the esteemed Art series of lenses, a sophisticated optical design is used that incorporates three SLD elements and four aspherical elements to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, as well as color fringing, distortions, and other anomalies for greater clarity and sharpness. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to suppress lens flare and ghosting for accurate color fidelity and high contrast, and a protective coating has been applied to the front element, too, to benefit working in harsh climates. Additionally, extending its versatility, a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range as well as greater control over depth of field.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, the lens sports a Hyper Sonic Motor to produce quick, smooth, and quiet autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. An Optical Stabilizer also benefits handheld shooting by minimizing the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery. The physical design utilizes Thermally Stable Composite material for durability in a wide range of environments, and a brass bayonet mount also offers rigidity and mounting precision.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Standard zoom lens is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however it can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 38.4-112mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in available light conditions and also provides greater control over depth of field when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements markedly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Four aspherical elements control spherical aberrations and distortion for increased sharpness and accurate rendering.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Optical Stabilizer system minimizes the appearance of camera shake by up to four stops to benefit making sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm is constructed from durable, fluorine-coated polycarbonate and also features a carbon feather film for smooth performance when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Front lens element has been treated with a water- and oil-repellent coating to benefit working in harsh environmental conditions.
Constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. Additionally, a brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

its been one year of using it.. and the results are awefully inconsistent regarding focus, never had issues with other canon lenses before until this .... &%) came in my hands. the inconsistent focus is a really serious flaw, really messing up my work like no other lens. it is sad to encounter out of focus after you took the photo and when editing. i really hate it and im considering selling it back so i can buy a better piece of equipment. this literally has caused me to lose money.

I have only been using this lens on my Canon 6d Mark II for about a month but am very pleased with the images. It is very sharp and with the f2.8 setting, is great in low light. But, beware, as others have mentioned this lens is heavy, more so than I expected.

Great for my needs

Loved it. I only had two lenses for my new camera and badly needed on below 100mm and one that could zoom in & out. Love Sigma quality. I'm still struggling with sharpness (cataract surgery in near future), so I'm relying on Auto more than I'd like. Could not submit photos with my 150-66 (said over the limit allowed).

I don't understand the negative reviews. People say it's "not sharp" and "focuses slowly". While it does not focus as fast as my Canon lens. It's still quick. And it is SHARP. Absolutely love this lens. Worth every penny.

Great FX Lens for D850

They lens is really sharp, especially at f/4 to f/5.6. It is the perfect focal length for general photo trips. It is a bit heavier than I would have liked, but I noted that it is still lighter than the Nikon 24-70mm. I just moved to FX from DX format so I bought quality glass for my new D850. The delivery from B&H was so fast I thought they were waiting down the street when I ordered!

Two Bad Lenses

By Henry

I recently ordered one of these lenses and found it provided unacceptable focusing results on two different Canon full frame DSLR's. B&H return/exchange policy is great, as they took this first lens back with no trouble and sent a second one. The second one was worse with clunking noises from when the image stability system turned on and off. Focusing on this one didn't seem significantly different. Focus issues don't exist with any of my other lenses. Interestingly, the serial numbers of these two lenses were three units apart. Maybe a bad day on the assembly line or something. Hard to gauge, but these two lenses were an absolute disappointment. I have enjoyed a different Sigma lens for years and expected more. While the two lenses were duds, I have nothing but praise for B&H in every aspect of my purchase and ultimately the returns. While Sigma let me down, B&H did not. Thanks B&H!!
