Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporar... Overview

By B&H Photo's

Blending a long reach with a convenient form factor, the Canon EF-mount 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Lens is a telephoto zoom within Sigma's Contemporary series that blends both a refined optical design with a compact and lightweight physical construction. On the optical front, this zoom utilizes four SLD glass elements to noticeably reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for improved clarity and color accuracy, and a Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to increase contrast when working in strong lighting conditions.

Balancing the optics, the lens sports a Hyper Sonic Motor to produce quick, smooth, and quiet autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. An Optical Stabilizer also benefits handheld shooting by minimizing the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery. The physical design utilizes Thermally Stable Composite material for durability in a wide range of environments; both twist and push-pull zoom mechanisms are available for improved control over field of view; and a brass bayonet mount also offers rigidity and mounting precision.

As part of the Contemporary line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance between convenience and performance, and meshes a compact, lightweight build and versatile handling with notable optical attributes.
Telephoto zoom lens is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 160-640mm equivalent focal length range.
Four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements are featured in the optical design and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy throughout the zoom range.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Optical Stabilizer system minimizes the appearance of camera shake to benefit making sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
In addition to a conventional twist mechanism for adjusting the zoom position, a push-pull movement can also be used for faster movement.
Front lens element has been treated with a water- and oil-repellent coating to benefit working in harsh environmental conditions.
Constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. Additionally, a brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.
Compatible with optional Sigma TC-1401 1.4x and TC-2001 2x teleconverters.

Built well

I was reluctant to get a contemporary lens, since I shoot with much heavier sports lens. I was surprised of the build quality . The 100-400mm lens is quiet and stable. A great addition to my lens selection.

Ordered the Sigma 100-400 in June 2022 to use with my new Canon R7 before we went on a photography safari in South Africa. I'm definitely new to wildlife photography, but this setup worked like a charm. I was able to get some great photos!

Nice lens for the price

I wanted the Canon 100-400 mkII but my wallet wouldn't go for it. I looked around and decided on the Sigma 100-400. Nice lens for the price. The Canon mount model does not come nor does Sigma make a tripod collar. I purchased a 3rd party tripod collar and it works fine. I'm not sure that the USB base dock was really worth the price. It might be if I needed to micro-adjust it but thankfully it is focusing fine and sharp for this pricepoint. I would recommend this lens.

Light weight and sharp at a great price

I use this on my Z FC with the FTZ adapter and it works perfectly with that setup. Very fast, quiet autofocus. I've also had the Nikon 200-500, and 80-400 which were both great lenses, but heavier and much more expensive than this one. I don't find anything lacking, in terms of image quality, image stabilization, or autofocus performance, in this lens in comparison to those. And it's great to have a much lighter lens at a third the price.

Mediocre sharpness

I've owned this lens for over a year now and used it on a Nikon D500 and D7500 with similar results. Despite having fine tuned the focus with both the Sigma dock and the in-camera focus fine tuning, I cannot get a crisp image especially at full zoom even when on a tripod. If you look at the images other reviewers posted, you'll notice none are very sharp. I would definitely not recommend this lens for wildlife

400mm at a decent price

This is my first large lens. It seems to have a quality build and I haven't noticed any abnormalities. It seems to work well and focus OK with good speed. I bought the elefront tripod mount which fits and works well. I wish the hood had locking feature or more friction. I screws on and off with a loose thread fit. On a couple of occasions the act of sitting the camera down on my lap has unscrewed the hood and it has fallen off. I will probably modify myself to fix the problem. Other than that it seems like a high quality lens at a reasonable price and of course B&H customer service can't be beat. I've been a long time customer.

If your shooting, and you have plenty of light, than you will get beautiful, colorful images. The stabilization makes things even better.

manageable handheld, quite sharp.

for the price, its a no brainer, very useful focal lengths. on a z6 with its high iso capability the slowness is less felt. autofocus is fine for me, contrary to reports (without calibration). i just use spot or dynamic modes for smaller targets in AF-C mode . a few small niggles, manual ring is a bit narrow. (but ok). zoom lock is only on 100 mm (for safety or something). reversing the hood doesnt really click on, its a bit loose sitting like that.

With the purchase of the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, B&H # CAMAEFRF (or other similar adapters), the Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens for Canon EF would be fully compatible for use on the Canon EOS R6 Mirrorless Digital Camera. As the Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens is a full-frame lens, it would be fully compatible to cover the full-frame sensor inside the Canon EOS R Mirrorless Digital Camera.
