Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporar... Overview

Blending a long reach with a convenient form factor, the Nikon F-mount 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Lens is a telephoto zoom within Sigma's Contemporary series that blends both a refined optical design with a compact and lightweight physical construction. On the optical front, this zoom utilizes four SLD glass elements to noticeably reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for improved clarity and color accuracy, and a Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to increase contrast when working in strong lighting conditions.

Balancing the optics, the lens sports a Hyper Sonic Motor to produce quick, smooth, and quiet autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. An Optical Stabilizer also benefits handheld shooting by minimizing the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery. The physical design utilizes Thermally Stable Composite material for durability in a wide range of environments; both twist and push-pull zoom mechanisms are available for improved control over field of view; and a brass bayonet mount also offers rigidity and mounting precision.

As part of the Contemporary line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance between convenience and performance, and meshes a compact, lightweight build and versatile handling with notable optical attributes.
Telephoto zoom lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 150-600mm equivalent focal length range.
Four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements are featured in the optical design and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy throughout the zoom range.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Optical Stabilizer system minimizes the appearance of camera shake to benefit making sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
In addition to a conventional twist mechanism for adjusting the zoom position, a push-pull movement can also be used for faster movement.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Front lens element has been treated with a water- and oil-repellent coating to benefit working in harsh environmental conditions.
Constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. Additionally, a brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.
Compatible with optional Sigma TC-1401 1.4x and TC-2001 2x teleconverters.

Nice lens for the price

I wanted the Canon 100-400 mkII but my wallet wouldn't go for it. I looked around and decided on the Sigma 100-400. Nice lens for the price. The Canon mount model does not come nor does Sigma make a tripod collar. I purchased a 3rd party tripod collar and it works fine. I'm not sure that the USB base dock was really worth the price. It might be if I needed to micro-adjust it but thankfully it is focusing fine and sharp for this pricepoint. I would recommend this lens.

400mm at a decent price

This is my first large lens. It seems to have a quality build and I haven't noticed any abnormalities. It seems to work well and focus OK with good speed. I bought the elefront tripod mount which fits and works well. I wish the hood had locking feature or more friction. I screws on and off with a loose thread fit. On a couple of occasions the act of sitting the camera down on my lap has unscrewed the hood and it has fallen off. I will probably modify myself to fix the problem. Other than that it seems like a high quality lens at a reasonable price and of course B&H customer service can't be beat. I've been a long time customer.

A nice inexpensive lens with reach

I have a Nikon 7500 DSLR and was getting frustrated my 300mm zoom wasn't quite capturing the details I'd hoped for with extended range shots (wildlife, mostly). The lens has some heft but certainly can be hand-held, especially when the vibration reduction is active. Recently I spent 2 hours wandering around an Audubon sanctuary with the weight of the camera/lens supported by my left hand and didn't get fatigued at all (I wouldn't recommend letting it hang freely from a neck strap if it's attached to the camera though). It does take some getting used to, and I spent most of my time on single focus point, Aperture priority, and moving between autofocus and manual override. The clearest focus can be elusive while handheld as there will be some fatigue and the stabilization takes a second to get there. Note I bought an aftermarket lens mount (iShoot brand). All in all, I've been happy with it so far both on a tripod and in hand. Frankly, I have this on by default whenever I go out hiking--just be sure to hold it in hand or in a ready lens case carried on your belt.

Nice telephoto lense !

I've used this lense several times and I do like the results so far. I did have to use the dock to update the focusing firmware twice. After the second time I have positive assurance this lense is nice. It is lightweight, easy to zoom , and now focused correctly. I have obtained some great bird photos so far. You have to remember that this lense has 3 focus ranges and it's easy to forget which one you're using since 2 ranges are relatively short per se . Nevertheless it's a learning curve. The quality of my pictures compare to my Canon 70-200/ f2.8 ! I would recommend this lense to others because for $800 you can't go wrong. Just be sure you obtain the firmware dock when you purchase this lense. It's a global lense so people from all over the world are using it. Happy shooting!

I wanted a zoom with this particular range, 100-400mm, that I could hand-hold (no need for a tripod collar, it's light enough). I have lately considered the new Nikon Z 100-400mm but its cost is extreme! Yes, it is probably better, perhaps sharper than the Sigma, but nearly $2K better? I don't think so. I especially like the push-pull feature for zooming without turning the zoom ring. It works well on my Nikon Z bodies with the FTZ adapter, sharp as can be, and I couldn't be happier.

Light weight and sharp at a great price

I use this on my Z FC with the FTZ adapter and it works perfectly with that setup. Very fast, quiet autofocus. I've also had the Nikon 200-500, and 80-400 which were both great lenses, but heavier and much more expensive than this one. I don't find anything lacking, in terms of image quality, image stabilization, or autofocus performance, in this lens in comparison to those. And it's great to have a much lighter lens at a third the price.

Mediocre sharpness

I've owned this lens for over a year now and used it on a Nikon D500 and D7500 with similar results. Despite having fine tuned the focus with both the Sigma dock and the in-camera focus fine tuning, I cannot get a crisp image especially at full zoom even when on a tripod. If you look at the images other reviewers posted, you'll notice none are very sharp. I would definitely not recommend this lens for wildlife

I would like to buy the iShoot Improved CNC 84mm tripod mount ring collar for the Sigma 100-400 F5-6.3 DG OS contemporary lens. Where can I buy it?
Asked by: Chester
Unfortunately, B&H did not have iShoot tripod collars. I'm not familiar with the CNC 84 collar. I purchased the iShoot SM140 collar for my Sigma 100-400 lens in early spring of 2020 and have been very pleased with it. Ordered it from Amazon for about $40, if I remember correctly. It was delivered in about two-three weeks from China (of course).

The Sigma 100-400 lens for Nikon is for a full-frame Nikon camera so yes, it will work on a D750. It also works for crop sensor Nikons which is what I purchased it for.
