Sigma 100-400mm f/5.0-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

Blending a long reach with a convenient form factor, the Nikon F-mount 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Lens is a telephoto zoom within Sigma's Contemporary series that blends both a refined optical design with a compact and lightweight physical construction. On the optical front, this zoom utilizes four SLD glass elements to noticeably reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for improved clarity and color accuracy, and a Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to increase contrast when working in strong lighting conditions.

Balancing the optics, the lens sports a Hyper Sonic Motor to produce quick, smooth, and quiet autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. An Optical Stabilizer also benefits handheld shooting by minimizing the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery. The physical design utilizes Thermally Stable Composite material for durability in a wide range of environments; both twist and push-pull zoom mechanisms are available for improved control over field of view; and a brass bayonet mount also offers rigidity and mounting precision.

As part of the Contemporary line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance between convenience and performance, and meshes a compact, lightweight build and versatile handling with notable optical attributes.
Telephoto zoom lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 150-600mm equivalent focal length range.
Four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements are featured in the optical design and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy throughout the zoom range.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Front lens element has been treated with a water- and oil-repellent coating to benefit working in harsh environmental conditions.
Nine-blade rounded diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Optical Stabilizer system minimizes the appearance of camera shake to benefit making sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
In addition to a conventional twist mechanism for adjusting the zoom position, a push-pull movement can also be used for faster movement.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.
Compatible with optional TC-1401 and TC-2001 Teleconverters to effectively extend the reach of the lens to 140-560mm f/7-9 or 200-800mm f/10-12.6, respectively.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

Sigma 100-400mm f/5.0-6.3 reviews

100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens for Nikon F is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 45.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the wait! As a happy owner of the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary, I have been waiting for the release of this lens! I wanted a quality lens that was lighter, and easy to carry as an everyday lens. The 100-400 met and exceeded my expectations! This is a solid well built (made in Japan) lens that takes nice sharp photos. I love the close focus of this lens and it produces very nice Bokeh. I find the focus to be quick and accurate. I mainly photograph wildlife, and this lens has the reach to meet most of my needs. This is my third Sigma lens, and I love them all. Sigma has done it again with a great lens at a reasonable price! I will say, it would be nice if it had a tripod collar.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens, loved it! I bought this lens a few weeks ago, when no reviews were available. Since I've owned Sigmas before, I went for this over the Tamron 150-600, and I'm sure I made the right choice. Not only it is remarkably sharp, but it has also very little CA and vignetting (with the right light it doe not need any kind of correction in editing). But probably the most remarkable feature of this great lens is that it is so light and small for a 400mm in FX, that you can carry it in a small bag without worries. Doesn't even need the tripod collar. Note that the focus is fast, accurate, smooth and very silent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A bird lovers delight I need more power at a reasonable price. After waiting, watching, studying the products and what my needs were I settled on this lens. I had been using a Nikon zoom (max 300 mm) for several years and often felt like I needed more glass. This one did exactly what I wanted. I can still walk around and handhold my lens. I like to keep moving and not stand in one place very long. So I usually don't take a tripod. It extends my reach by 150 mm. It's extremely sharp and very quick focusing. And the price is more in line with what I wanted to spend. So far, it's just what I wanted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Keeper so far ! I'm a pixel peeper and so far I'm impressed with this lens. I felt this range would be better for me as I don't need the reach of the 150-600mm, and I didn't want a very large and heavy lens to carry along. I shot with it today on a D500 and i'm impressed with the sharpness of this lens wide open. Very little Chromatic aberration. The stabilization is pretty impressive too! The only thing I can't tell yet is how fast it will track fast moving subjects. I didn't tune the lens and straight out I was getting sharp images. I still need to learn all of the features of this lens, but so far I'm impressed! I've included a picture shot with the D500 handheld @ 160/sec at 400mm iso 3200 and about 100% crop of the same image. it's sharpened with the standard sharpening in Lightroom 25. Hope this helps!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sigma 100-400mm- A lot for the money SIGMA 100-400MM F5-6.3 DG OS HSM - Light, Sharp, a pleasure to use. Already having a SIGMA 150-600MM F5-6.3 DG OS HSM, I knew that I could count on Sigma to deliver a great product. I bought this one for a walking around lens. My 150-600 won't focus closer than 10ft, the SIGMA 100-400MM F5-6.3 DG OS HSM focuses down to just over 5ft. The bokeh is smooth. I used my dock to make the viewfinder image stabilization smoother, but the lens needed no fine tuning for focus at all. The only thing I would change, is to offer an optional tripod mount like the removable mount on the 150-600c. I am very pleased with both the build quality and the lens performance. If I know I'm going to need the reach, the 150-600mm will still be my weapon of choice, but for walking around you can't beat the SIGMA 100-400MM F5-6.3 DG OS HSM for the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just spectacular! I settled on this lens as a kind of compromise: following heart surgery, I could no longer heft the 150-600mm I'd been using, and I didn't think the bridge cameras would offer sufficient image quality or, as was critical, the ability to reliably photograph birds in flight. The weight of the 100-400mm was in my wheel house, and after putting the Sigma through its birding paces, it's wonderfully responsive and offers glorious sharpness and color fidelity, as is apparent in the shot of the Scarlet Tanager. As a plus, it also functions as a very nice macro lens. I am exceedingly pleased so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact Well Built Telephoto Nice telephoto range, on my Nikon D7200 it is equivalent to 150mm -600mm. At a little over 7 in length and weighing approx. 40 oz. it can be hand held easily and travels well. It is Sigma's Contemporary lens series but is solidly built, it is not the Art series but it is close. The lens mount features a rubber sealing gasket. The hood has an integral circular indentation at the base, to provide a hand-hold when using the push-pull feature of the zoom ring. This indentation also works well in providing a locking recess for a lens rain cover. The zoom and focus rings both turn smoothly. The optical stabilizer has a number of options and seems to provide adequate assistant when hand-holding lens. The focus is reasonably quick and very accurate, no in-camera adjustments were required. I was very satisfied with the quality of the shots I took, both color and contrast were excellent at all apertures, no noticeable vignette or CA. I have attached two bird pictures both taken at 400mm. A tripod collar would have been a nice addition but at the reasonable cost of this lens it is a winner!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens at a bargain price The ideal lens for nature photography, from close up to telephoto this lens gets the job done. It is compact and reasonably light to take on a casual walk. It performs well too, with good sharpness throughout the zoom range. It is comparable to my Nikkor 80-400mm only much easier to carry and use handheld. Caveats, no tripod mount, which isn't that much of a problem since it is a light lens. Highly recommended, and the price is very reasonable. Sigma, you have a winner!
