Feiyu SPG overview

  • 1Description

The SPG 3-Axis Smartphone/Action Camera Gimbal from Feiyu features a sliding arm mechanism to quickly center your device without the use of counterweights. This handheld gimbal also features a smart vertical mode wherein a slow tilt from the horizontal re-orients the screen 180°. Besides the vlogger-popular vertical mode, the Bluetooth-enabled SPG offers panning, panning/tilting, and lock modes. Its slip-ring motor enables limitless 360° panning, and its inversion mode enables you to capture low-mode views.

The downloadable Feiyu On app can be used for auto face-tracking, to trigger automatic gimbal calibration, to update firmware, and to select various parameters. The aluminum alloy SPG gimbal features a rubberized handle with a joystick and two control buttons. Its rechargeable lithium-ion battery offers a runtime of up to eight hours. Switching between the SPG gimbal's panning, panning and tilting, and lock modes is accomplished with taps of the control button. The SPG handheld gimbal folds for easy storage.

The gimbal is IP67 water-resistant, dust-resistant, and splash-proof. It can be used in under 3' of water for up to 30 minutes, as well as used safely in rain or snow.

    Feiyu SPG reviews

    SPG Water-Resistant 3-Axis Smartphone/Action Camera Gimbal is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from ACTION! ...smooth action I've always thought that a gimbal stabilizer was a bit too gimmicky for me. I didn't understand how such a device could change the ways in which I use my iPhone 7Plus. After viewing many online video examples comparing video with-and-without stabilization, I knew I needed the device in order to produce the results I wanted. The Feiyu-Tech SPG 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal Stabilizer brings pro-like stabilization to home videos. But I've also seen improvement in my still photography, because I can now find better angles and uptick my composition by making instant on-the-fly adjustments. The build quality of this Feiyu is unsurpassed for its feel in hand and oh so smooth mechanical operation. It is a lightweight 350g for easy maneuvering during one-hand operation. I had considered purchasing the SPG-LIVE. The main difference being that the LIVE uses weights as a counterbalance mechanism. I prefer the sliding arm of the SPG, which appears to be a more precise way of counterbalancing. The included 22650 Li-ion rechargeable battery provides an 8-hour runtime. Completing the package, Bluetooth connectivity makes the Feiyu a breeze to operate. And the free Feiyu ON app adds face-tracking, manual focus and panoramic viewing. I'm very impressed with the Feiyu-Tech SPG. It's a great introduction to mobile videography. Highly recommended.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Really Wanted to Like It, But... I really wanted to like this gimbal: its packaged nicely, has decent instructions, has a nice rubberized grip, and even comes in a nice (if tight and somewhat stinky) case. Another nice feature is that it has a sliding arm which eliminates the need for counterweights and will supposedly accommodate a wide range of phones. In my case, however, it was barely able to balance my phone without a case (174g) with a Rode VideoMic Me attached (34g). Even with the arm fully extended, the phone and attached mic was not quite balanced and I experienced some vibration at certain angles (the phone on its own with no attachments worked fine with no vibration at any angle). The unit also had a slight horizon tilt out of the box that could not be corrected, either via the app or by doing a manual adjustment as indicated in the instructions. No matter what I tried, no device I owned (various Android tablets and phones) was able to connect to the unit via bluetooth so that I could make adjustments with its settings app (the camera app was able to connect, however, and did seem functional, but I did not experiment with it too much as I planned to use a third-party camera app). As far as the actual stabilization goes, once balanced, the unit performed as expected, but it would have been nice to be able to modify its responsiveness and to adjust the joystick sensitivity. In sum, I would say this gimbal is potentially quite nice as long as the total weight is less than 208g and you could connect the settings app to it via Bluetooth in order to make at least some type of adjustment. But, if you have a heavy phone, wish to use attachments such as mics or ND filters, or have problems connecting to the unit via Bluetooth, its really little more than a nicely built paperweight, which is why I sent it back.
