Pentax KP overview

  • 1Description

Pairing the unique and low-light-optimized camera body with a versatile and fast zoom, the silver Pentax KP DSLR Camera with 20-40mm Lens Kit from B&H bundles the DSLR with the standard zoom HD PENTAX DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR lens to comprise everything needed to begin photographing.

  • Pentax KP DSLR Camera (Body Only, Silver)

Taking the stage as a modular and compact camera option in the Pentax lineup is the silver KP DSLR with a unique smart function exchangeable grip that can be swapped as needed by the photographer. Beyond this, the KP was designed for outstanding low-light performance due to a newly developed 24.3MP APS-C CMOS sensor that eliminates its anti-aliasing filter and the PRIME IV Engine with an accelerator unit for processing. This enables it to reach sensitivities up to ISO 819200 with minimal noise as well as capture maximum sharpness at all times. A 5-axis in-body Shake Reduction II module further assists image quality by compensating for up to 5 stops of shutter speed during longer exposures as well as activating the Pixel Shift Resolution mode.

Still imaging benefits from the use of a SAFOX 11 27-point AF sensor, which will help photographers lock onto their subjects quickly and accurately. This is sure to come in handy when shooting at the max speed of 7 fps. Also, the camera is equipped with a mechanical shutter of 1/6000 second and an electronic shutter that is able to reach 1/24000 second. Along with stills, the KP is capable of recording Full HD 1080p video at up to 30 fps and it has interval shooting capable of creating a 4K movie. The weather-sealed magnesium alloy body also sports built-in Wi-Fi along with a tilting 3.0" 921k-dot LCD monitor and a 0.95x optical viewfinder with 100% coverage.

    Smart Function Exchangeable Grip
Keep your camera as compact as possible or enhance the grip for working with large telephoto zooms with the exchangeable grip system of the KP DSLR. Three different grip sizes are available. The medium size is ideal for most standard lenses and situations while the small will shrink the camera down while using compact primes. The large grip provides a hefty, secure feeling that enhances control when using large, heavy lenses.
24.3MP APS-C CMOS Sensor & PRIME IV Engine with Accelerator Unit
The KP delivers high-quality imagery through an advanced 24.3MP APS-C CMOS sensor that is designed to create detailed images with minimal noise at sensitivities up to ISO 819200. Guaranteeing maximum resolution, the sensor lacks an anti-aliasing, or optical low-pass, filter though this will cause a higher chance of aliasing and moire. For situations at risk of these artifacts, users can leverage an AA Filter Simulator function that slightly moves the sensor in order to mimic the effects of a physical filter.

This sensor combines with the power of the PRIME IV 14-bit image processing engine with accelerator unit to create large images with ease and speed. Improving upon the past generation, the PRIME IV can deliver photographs at up to 7 fps in raw format for up to 8 frames. This processor also helps control numerous advanced features, including Pixel Shift Resolution and more.
    5-Axis In-Body Shake Reduction II
A staple of Pentax DSLRs, the KP is equipped with a 5-axis Shake Reduction II system that can counter the effects of camera shake by up to 5 stops. This larger system is optimized for the full-frame sensor and can account for yaw, pitch, and roll as well as vertical and horizontal motion of the camera. Also, due to the stabilization being incorporated into the KP's body, it functions with every K-mount lens.
Pentax takes advantage of the sensor's available movement in order to develop additional features, such as the Pixel Shift Resolution setting. This mode shifts the sensor in order to capture full color data on each pixel by compositing four shots. This grants exceptional clarity, lowers noise, and boosts the effective resolution. Additionally, the KP has a motion correction setting that allows this function to be used even when shooting handheld.

Another capability is an Image Composition Assist function, which allows you to shift the sensor up/down and left/right as well as slightly rotate it. This lets users easily adjust their composition without needing to move their camera and can be useful for delicately balanced tripod work.
    SAFOX 11 AF System
Making sure you can lock on to subjects quickly and accurately is the SAFOX 11 AF system. This phase-detection TTL autofocus method offers 27 points, with 25 cross-type points in the center for improved accuracy. It is also able to work in low-light conditions as dim as -3 EV and the camera offers a dedicated LED AF assist light.
Full HD 1080p Video Recording & 4K Interval Movie
In addition to standard stills capture, the KP is capable of Full HD video at up to 30p or 60i using H.264 compression. This enables photographers to add high-resolution motion capture to their arsenal without needing to carry another camera. Also, when shooting in HD 720p, users can shoot at up to 60p. Additionally, the camera is NTSC/PAL switchable and it is equipped with a microphone jack for high-quality audio support. Interval shooting is available with a movie mode to automatically create time-lapse videos at up to 4K resolution.
    Weather- and Dust-Resistant Body
Durability has always been one of Pentax's strong suits, and the KP is no exception with a magnesium alloy body that is tough and lightweight. Also, the KP is sealed to ensure no rain or dust will take your camera out of commission. The camera is designed to handle freezing temperatures as well, with a rating down to 14°F. This durability is maintained when the optional battery grip is in use, as the grip is also sealed in numerous places.

  • Pentax HD Pentax DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR Lens (Black)

The black HD Pentax DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR Lens from Pentax is a high performance standard length zoom lens for K-mount APS-C cameras. Its 35mm focal length equivalency is 30.5-61.5mm providing a versatile and practical range for wide-angle to standard length shooting. It is the first zoom lens in the Pentax Limited Series line and brings with it a durable, weather-sealed body, HD lens coating and an optical design consisting of one ED element and one super-low dispersion element.

The f/2.8-4 maximum aperture enables effective low light shooting and, at the wide-angle end, control over its shallow depth of field for images that place sharp focus on the subject with a pleasing out of focus background. An in-lens direct current (DC) focus motor provides smooth and quiet autofocus action and its Quick-Shift Focus System enables rapid shift from autofocus to manual focus mode.

The lens barrel and the included hood are made from high-grade aluminum alloy, distance and depth of field scales are clearly marked on the barrel and a smooth rotating, knurled ring provides manual focus control. SP (Super Protect) coating on the front and rear lens elements repels dust, water and grease to help maintain peak performance.

30.5 to 61.5mm Focal Length Equivalency and f/2.8 Maximum Aperture
With its 2x zoom coverage of 20-40mm, this lens offers focal length coverage from 30.5 to 61.5mm in the 35mm format when mounted on a PENTAX K-series DSLR. This covers a practical set of frequently used focal lengths and is ideal as a versatile everyday lens. Its maximum aperture of f/2.8 at the wide-angle end of the zoom is effective in low light and provides shallow depth of field focus.
    HD Lens Coating
This lens has been treated with the PENTAX-developed HD coating, a high grade, multi-layer coating that reduces unwanted reflection, allowing the user to capture high-contrast images free of flare and ghosting.
    DC Autofocus Motor
Shoot discreetly with in-lens, direct current (DC) Auto Focus motor operation for smooth & quiet performance.
    Quick-Shift Focus System
The Quick-Shift Focus System allows instant switching from autofocus to manual focus operation.
Weather-Resistant Construction and Durable Aluminum Barrel
With seven special seals to prevent intrusion of water, moisture and dust, this is the first lens of the "Limited" series to feature the PENTAX-original weather-resistant construction. With a handsome and durable aluminum alloy barrel and weather-sealing, this lens is able to perform in almost any shooting condition.
    SP Lens Coating
The PENTAX SP (Super Protect) coating on the front and rear lens elements repels dust, water and grease to keep your lens clean and your images sharp.
    Optical Design
The ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass and a super-low dispersion glass element in this lens' optics deliver clear, high resolution imagery with edge-to-edge sharpness, throughout the entire zoom range.
    Rounded Diaphragm Blades
Enhanced with a rounded nine-blade diaphragm at the wide apertures for optimal optical performance and gorgeous bokeh effects.

Pentax KP reviews

KP DSLR Camera with 20-40mm Lens Kit (Silver) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from My travel kit. Very responsive body coupled with a zoom that delivers. Fast accurate focus, insane high ISO, how ever I do cap it at ISO 10 000. As far as handling goes, the lens is a delight, with great rendering worthy of being labeled "limited" The body, very compact, not much larger than my Super Program. The D-BG7 is a must with my large hands and it holds the Dli90 for extended battery life. Would I buy it again... yes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Six Months with a KP and 20-40mm lens At the time I'm writing this I've owned my KP for six months. I bought my KP as a backup for my K-1 and as a travel camera for those occasions where photography isn't the primary purpose of a trip. I liked the KP from the beginning, but have found that I like the KP even more every time I use it. The best way I can describe my feelings for the KP is to use an automotive analogy: I view my K-1 in the way I view modern Corvettes - big, powerful, and containing just about every possible feature anyone could want. Possibly even a bit intimidating. In contrast, I find myself viewing my KP like a Miata - smaller and simpler than the 'Vette, but perhaps more nimble, less complex but still having every ability you need. And in a way, more personal. Don't get me wrong - I feel that both cameras are great. It's just that sometimes when I shoot I'm doing serious work and want to pull out all the stops but other times I'm shooting for the joy of it. My experience is that the K-1 is the right choice for me in the first situation, the KP in the second. I got my KP as part of a kit with the 20-40 lens. I normally shoot just prime lenses, but I recognize that when traveling a zoom is at least sometimes the way to go. Still, I value image quality more so than convenience so I gravitated to the 20-40. The 20-40 is an unusual lens insofar as it manages to combine both excellent image quality and small size. The downside of having both high image quality and a small size in one lens is that the lens' zoom range isn't very wide (just 2x) and the lens also a variable (but bright) aperture of F2.8-4. Still, the 20-40 is an excellent travel lens for someone who values a combination of portability and image quality over just convenience or just image quality. I've also acquired a 15mm lens to accompany the KP, and will be adding a 70mm to complete my KP travel lens kit. The compact size of the KP and the lenses I carry with it allows me to fit everything into a small bag for those times when carrying a big camera bag isn't desirable. I've found that my KP, lenses and a spare battery or two fit comfortably into a small Domke F-5XB that I already had. This bag works great for short trips, but I also have a larger bag for the KP kit that provides more room for additional lenses and the miscellanea that we all tend to carry around with us while shooting. The low light capability of the KP has proven to be a great benefit to me. I find myself comfortable with cranking the ISO up to 6400 (I've not needed to go higher than that so far) and not having to worry about noise in the finished image. To me, one of the under appreciated attributes of Pentax cameras is their attention to the human interface. I find the KP's control layout to be very easy to use. I also feel that the KP's customizable function dial is great. On both my KP and the K-1 it's often set to allow me to easily change ISO while shooting by just turning the top setting dial. I have also set one of the other 'Smart' functions on the KP's dial to change the bracketing settings. Personally, *I* have not found the KP's battery life to be an issue. You need to keep in mind that I used to shoot a lot of film, and so I used to having to change film *at least* every 36 shots on 35mm. I can change a KP's battery a lot faster than I could ever load a new roll of 35mm film in an unmotorized camera. And let's not even talk about the time it took me to load a new roll of 120 roll film in my 645 camera - which I had to do every 15 shots. Only 400 shots between battery changes? - not a problem for me! The KP is an excellent camera in many ways, but for me it's the camera I most enjoy using. Sure, the KP isn't a full-frame 36MP monster like the K-1, and while the KP may not have all the features of it's pro-level stablemates, it does have everything you need to get your shot. And get your shot with a smile on your face. The KP offers excellent image quality in a solid, well thought out, compact package.
