SeaSonic Electronics SSR-650PD overview

  • 1Description

The Prime 650W 80 Plus Platinum Modular ATX Power Supply from SeaSonic Electronics sports a single rail that delivers up to 650W of power for all the internal components inside a desktop system. The power supply comes with modular cables that connect to four PCIe cards, six SATA drives, three molex-compatible devices, and other essential equipment. Aside from delivering power, the modular cables help maximize the internal space in a compact chassis by letting you remove unused cables. With an 80-PLUS Platinum rating, the PSU efficiently converts power coming from the source to offer you lower operating costs. There's also an onboard variable speed 135mm fan for quietly cooling the PSU.

80 PLUS Platinum
The high-efficient 80 PLUS Platinum certification offers greater than 90 %, 92 %, and 89 % efficiency at 20 %, 50 %, and 100 % operating loads, respectively. With an 80 PLUS Platinum rating, this power supply will waste less energy during power conversion, lowering operating costs for the user.
Fluid Dynamic Fan Bearing
The Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) fan is designed to take advantage of the impact absorbance effects of oil. It is reliable and generates less operating noise and heat than ball bearing fans. The lubrication of the bearing surface reduces friction and vibration and therefore lowers overall power consumption. This type of fan technology also increases the lifespan of the fan.
Power Supply Sound
With Seasonic's Hybrid mode, the onboard fan can operate at various spin speeds to help eliminate noise.
Micro Tolerance Load Regulation
Seasonic's design keeps the output voltage within a very tight range, achieving under 0.5 % load regulation.
Cable-Free Connection Design
With a special design feature, the back panel and PCB (Printed Circuit Board) are connected by a copper plate. This solution lowers the chance of production errors during manual insertion and improves output power quality.
Multi-GPU Setup
4 PCIe (6+2-pin) connections are available to support multi-GPU setups.
Gold-Plated Connectors
Gold plating critical connector pins (motherboard, CPU and PCIe cables) extends the lifetime of the connectors and increases the efficiency of current transmission.

    SeaSonic Electronics SSR-650PD reviews

PRIME 650W 80 Plus Platinum Modular ATX Power Supply is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not as Described The cable set included with this power unit does not contain the cables listed in the description. In particular, it has only one 8-pin to 8-pin/(2x4-pin) while the description states two such cables. The documentation included with the power supply also states only one 8-to-8 power cable supplied, as does the outside of the box - however, the box label has a sticker over the cable qty for that cable, indicating perhaps correction of a misprint. So, BandH could consider that original advertising materials from Seasonic might also be in error. Additional cables are difficult to locate, and before I could find a dealer I ordered a similar 750W which the 650 manual said had the cables I needed. Contact Seasonic and they will identify a dealer for you who supplies individual cables at quite modest expense compared to competitors such as Corsair or Silverstone whose extra cables are more readily available. That aside, and not having tested the supply I returned, I can say at this point that it appears very well made and comes elegantly packaged. The unit is in a black draw-string bag, and a second bag is provided for storing cables not used in a setup. A fine looking piece of kit indeed, altogether, and a reputation for quality! Priced slightly under Be Quiet, ... although I have heard that Seasonic manufactures components for the Be Quiet power units. Power supply hunters should beware that manufacturers make their power units/cable sets proprietary with different combinations of square and half-round pins on the connectors, so you cannot mix manufacturers. If you get Seasonic or any other manufacturer's units, you MUST ensure that if you might ever need additional cables, you can locate them. Note, for example, that with the 650W unit, there are many more sockets on the power unit than there are cables to fill those sockets.
