HGST 0S04007 overview

  • 1Description

Designed with an MTBF rating of 1 million hours for use in 24/7 always-on environments, the 6TB Deskstar 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS Drive Kit from HGST features a 6TB storage capacity, a SATA III 6 Gb/s interface, a 128MB cache, a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, and a 3.5" form factor. While this drive is intended for use in NAS and business-critical environments, it is also suitable for general use at home and can store files such as music, movies, photos, documents, and more. Furthermore, Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS) helps anticipate drive disturbances and counteracts them, thus improving performance under strenuous conditions.

General Features

Rotational Vibration Safeguard
Rotational Vibration Safeguard has its own vibration sensors placed at the edges of the hard disk and on the edges of the drive's circuit board. If these sensors feel a vibration rippling through the drive, they can feed forward a signal to the actuator that controls the head's position. The actuator them compensates for the disturbance, counteracting it with an equal and opposite force. In this way, the head is able to "ride" the vibration and stay on track.

    HGST 0S04007 reviews

6TB Deskstar 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS Drive Kit is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to install, works well - hopefully will last I bought 5 of the 6TB HGST Deskstar NAS drives to use in a Synology DiskStation DS1817+. Installation was smooth and easy - all drives are alive and working well. I can't really speak to the raw performance compared to other disks - I'm sure you could get carried away doing benchmarks on large and small file transfers between the different manufacturers. My primary desire is for reliability and longevity. I opted for 5 stars just because we're off to a good start. But the true rating for a hard drive is determined by how long it lasts... Every review I read and conversation I had indicated that HGST is rock solid. Let's hope they're right!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what it is supposed to do, quiet All five drives I ordered were good out of the box and are working well. Four of them are configured in a FreeNAS RAIDZ2 system connected to a HP-H220 SAS controller flashed to IT mode. I held my breath and ordered these over the WD Red 6TB drives since the price difference nearly paid for the fifth drive. A pleasant surprise is that mine are extremely quiet, counter to some other reviews. I replaced all fans in my Supermicro server case with the quietest ones I could find, and I still can't hear the four drives operating in the SATA bays. Time will tell on longevity, but for now these seem to be a good value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great hard drive but very noisy Purchased 4 here for QNAP NAS and 5 previously for Synology NAS. No issues with any of the 9 so far. All have had very hard use (TB per disk per day). Very noisy (can easily be heard over high air flow computers in the same room).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great choice for a NAS. I bought two of these and have them in a RAID 1 in a Synology NAS. As you may have read here or elsewhere, they are louder than normal drives. I wouldn't say they're obnoxious or anything, though. If you are buying them for a quiet environment and you think the drives will have constant reads and writes, maybe look at something else. If you have a network closet for the device that you are planning on installing these drives into, or if you like hearing your drives work, then I would definitely recommend. I've only owned the drives for a couple or weeks or so - time will tell regarding reliability.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bought six, two didn't work. I bought 6 of these drives for a NAS. Of the six, two didn't work right out of the box.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Drive - Should Be Shock Mounted I have two of these drives; one is used for a backup drive, and the other is used for media-server/backup drive. I chose this drive for capacity, expected reliability, and pricepoint. I also chose this drive because it is about the largest capacity before the need to use helium for lower headheight because of laminar flow. Any larger then you would likely need helium, which I am trying to avoid for another generation of drives. The drive case is filled with platters, meaning that there are many heads, so if you don't shock mount this drive you will hear it. It's a 7,200rpm drive filled with platters, and that's the way it's going to be. Copying from a slow SSD, I get 160MB sustained, when writing to the drive, so other than the thumping during seeking, I am happy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This is a very LOUD HardDrive I read some reviews saying this was a loud hard drive... i didn't really paid attention.. thought i was not a big deal... but Lord this thing is VERY LOUD i cant work because i get distracted with the HDD making all kind of noises xD

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Inexpensive NAS HDD Does the job. Installed 3 in a Synology NAS and have had no errors and good speed in RAID 5 configuration. Cheaper than Seagate or Western Digital's similar offerings on a per Terabtye basis. Only time will tell if HGST makes reliable HDDs.
