Sony a7 II Mirrorless Camera
Full-Frame Alpha Stabilized
Sony has taken their line of full-frame cameras to the next level with the a7 II Mirrorless Camera, which features 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization with 4.5 stops of compensation. Operation of the 24.3-megapixel series has been streamlined with a redesigned grip, shutter release button, and customizable controls; the a7 II also features a moisture- and dust-resistant design with a magnesium alloy body and a more robust lens mount. And, with refined algorithms and better utilization of the BIONZ X image processor, the a7 II has an enhanced Fast Hybrid AF system that is about 30% faster than the previous model along with a 5 fps burst rate with continuous autofocus.
Full-Frame Sensor, BIONZ X Processor, and Stabilization
Incorporated into the a7 II's redesigned body is a full-frame 24.3MP Exmor CMOS sensor, which offers a wide dynamic range with minimal noise and rich, subtle gradations. The sensor also offers an ISO range of 100-51,200 which can be expanded down to ISO 50. Coupled with the BIONZ X processor, this camera also supports fluid performance for high-speed shooting applications, including the ability to shoot continuously at up to 5 fps and record Full HD video at up to 60p
5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Image Stabilization
Packed into the svelte a7 II is a 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization system, which compensates for five types of camera shake encountered during handheld shooting of still images and video. This allows users to confidently use any lens, even adapted lenses, for critical imaging without encountering blur from camera shake. This system will compensate for approximately 4.5 stops of shutter speed for working with a huge variety of subjects.
Enhanced Fast Hybrid AF
Utilizing 117 phase-detection and 25 contrast-detection autofocus points with a wide area of coverage, the a7 II can smoothly and quickly track fast-moving subjects throughout the frame. It optimizes for both speed and accuracy with an enhanced algorithm that improves performance by about 30% when compared to previous generations. This just-developed algorithm will more accurately predict subject movement for tracking that is 1.5x more accurate. Also, Lock-on AF tracking will analyze more information from the scene to provide dramatically improved accuracy and stability and Eye AF can prioritize a subject's pupil for excellent portraits even with a shallow depth of field.
Video Recording
Full HD and XAVC S Format
Shoot Full HD 1920 x 1080 video at frame rates of 60p, 30p, and 24p with the high-bit-rate 50 Mbps XAVC S format. This results in excellent image quality with minimal noise and artifacts without requiring a large amount of disk space. Additionally, the system uses linear PCM sound for high quality audio.

When recording internally, users will record video with a 4:2:0 sampling at 8-bit, however, to even further improve image quality the a7 II has clean HDMI output for use with an external recorder. This allows users to capture 4:2:2 uncompressed video and save in an edit-ready format.
Customizable Color Profiles and S-Log2 Gamma
To make sure the a7 II is able to use its extensive dynamic range while recording video it incorporates extensive customizable color and gamma controls. Users can adjust the gamma, black level, knee, color level, and more. Also users can use the same S-Log2 Gamma Curve that is found on high end Sony Cinema cameras that squeezes up to 1300% more dynamic range into the video signal then traditional REC709, for increased post-production flexibility.
Audio Input & Headphone Jack
The a7 II features a 3.5mm microphone input jack for compatibility with external microphones. And for users needing more the a7 II is also compatible with the Sony XLR-K2M XLR Adapter for recording professional balanced XLR audio signals with phantom power and adjustable mic/line inputs. For monitoring audio the a7 II features a 3.5mm headphone jack as well as real time audio levels for a visual reference.
Body Design
Refined EVF, LCD, and Ergonomics
 • High-resolution 2.36m-dot OLED viewfinder offers a bright, clear means for eye-level viewing.
 • Rear LCD now features a higher 1.2m-dot resolution along with a versatile tilting design that moves upward 107° and downward 41° for working from high and low angles.
 • Featuring a larger, more refined grip shape, users will find the a7 II to have a more secure feel even when large lenses are mounted.
 • Shutter release button has been reshaped and moved forward for a more natural shooting position and a decrease in camera shake.
 • Button customization is available with the ability to assign any of 56 functions to any of the 10 customizable buttons for a more personalized setup.
Magnesium Alloy Construction and Robust Lens Mount
 • Well-built design includes a magnesium alloy top cover, front cover, and internal structure and the lens mount has been redesigned with greater strength and rigidity for extra security when using larger or longer lenses.
 • Improved weather sealing for greater dust and moisture resistance, providing more protection when shooting out in the elements.
 • Optical filter on the sensor has an anti-static coating and there is an anti-dust mechanism to prevent dust from adhering to the sensor.
Connectivity
Wi-Fi and NFC
Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity enables the a7 II to instantly share imagery to mobile devices for direct sharing online to social networking, via email, and to cloud storage sites. NFC (Near Field Communication) is also supported, which allows for one-touch connection between the camera and compatible mobile devices; no complex set-up is required. Once connected, the linked mobile device can also display a live view image on its screen and remotely control the camera's shutter.
Ruggard Hunter 35 DSLR Holster Bag

The Hunter 35 DSLR Holster Bag from Ruggard is slightly larger than the Hunter 25 and holds a DSLR (up to semi-pro size) with lens attached, face down, in shooting position. When you're ready to shoot, simply remove your camera, get the shot and replace your camera in the bag. The zippered top of the bag opens away from your body for fast access to your gear. This also serves as a security feature since no one but you will be able to see inside the bag.

The bag has a water-repellent exterior and smooth polyester lining that helps prevent scratches to the finish of your camera/lens combo. Inside, there are two removable touch fastened strips that can be configured to support your gear.

For storage, there is a front zippered organizer panel, mesh side pocket and two side loops that accept optional pouches. On the inside of the quick-release flap, there are two touch fastened memory card pockets. The bag is carried by its removable shoulder strap, top carry handle or belt loop that will leave you hands free. The zippers have yellow pull tabs that make the bag easy to use while you're wearing gloves.

SanDisk 64GB Extreme PRO UHS-I SDXC Memory Card

Designed for SD devices that can capture Full HD, 3D, and 4K video, as well as raw and burst photography, the 64GB Extreme PRO UHS-I SDXC Memory Card from SanDisk has a capacity of 64GB, is compatible with the UHS-I bus, and features a speed class rating of V30, which guarantees minimum write speeds of 30 MB/s. If your device does not support the V30 standard, this card also supports the U3 standard, which likewise guarantees minimum write speeds of 30 MB/s. Read speeds are supported up to 200 MB/s and write speeds max out at 90 MB/s. A built-in write-protect switch helps to safeguard against the accidental erasure of card data.

While this card has been designed for cameras that are UHS-I / V30 / U3 compatible, it may be used in devices that do not support UHS-I / V30 / U3. However, bear in mind that this card will then default to your device's speed class and bus rating, such as UHS-I and U1, which supports minimum write speeds of 10 MB/s, or Class 10, which also supports minimum write speeds of 10 MB/s.

As with most SanDisk cards, this memory card is shockproof, X-ray proof, waterproof, while also being able to withstand temperatures from -13 to 185°F, allowing you to take this card with you into extreme environments, such as snow, deserts, and pools. Should the card's data become compromised, you also benefit from the option to download RescuePRO Deluxe software as well as a limited lifetime warranty.

Sony A7 II Reviews

Sony A7 II with Sony LA-EA5 A-Mount

GREAT! more than I expected

This camera allows me to use a lens designed for a smaller sensor so crops accordingly and for the photos I have taken picture quality is good . Personally I don't like a touch monitor and prefer to use the menu and navigate around one really nice thing is the position of the menu button it's on it's own and makes for a quick operation. All the drop down menus are good and once you learn how to navigate them it's good, The card slot being on it's own is also easy to get to. Most of my photography is taken flowers and with the manual settings a good depth of field can be acquired. Most people will know what this camera can achieve but actually reading professional photographers reviews and seeing what they have taken sells the camera. The battery charging was not design very good to charge the battery it's done by plugging the camera in, a stand alone charger would have earned this review 5 stars . I bought this camera to start my production company and it's been working so good for weddings, portraits , and commercial photography for products and brands.

the only downside is the shutter is a bit louder than what I thought it would be - I moved from a Nikon d5300 and the quality and weight difference is just amazing.

Great for Still Images

Had one for a few years. Sold it to streamline my photo bag. Missed it. Bought it all over again. Feels solid in the hand like the 35mm SLR's I grew up on. The 28-70mm 3.5-5.6 kit lens is excellent. Sure it's slow, but I've done some beautiful commercial work with it. Autofocus on the A7II body seems sluggish compared to the Leica VLux (typ 114), and video appears mushy in comparison to the Leica. However, for carefully composed images of slower moving subjects or manual focus shots, it's hard to think of a down side to the A7II as a still camera. It is my trusty friend. Not all friends are perfect, of course.

Although it is pretty old nowadays but I like it a lot.

Upgraded from m43. Though m43 is pretty good for my use I have used it for too many years. It's a new experience using the full frame. Hope it has a good durability.

One Of The Best Mirrorless Cameras Out There

By Ana
Rated 5 out of 5

First of all I was amazed at how well the image stabilization worked in this camera, allowing me to shoot at lower speeds. I found the images are super sharp when sticking to FE 55 1.8. One of the biggest pros of the Sony a7II is that it's incredibly light/small and I can take it anywhere. The price is also fair and another big pro. I use it for shooting portraits as well as video and it really did wonders for my work as a beginner audiovisual professional. The only thing that bothered me at the beginning was the battery life. Thankfully, this kind of problem can be easily fixed if you commit to expanding your gear. I see how more experienced photographers might find this annoying, but for me it's really not a problem. Overall, I believe people would like this camera and this kit. It's one of those cameras that make you excited to work and grow in your craft. 100% recommend.

Excellent step up from my Alpha 77MII

I have used Sonys for more than 20 years; the a7ii is my first mirrorless (replacing an Alpha 55) and will be used alongside my Alpha 77II. I couldn't afford an a7iii, but I am very pleased with the a7ii with 28-70 lens after using it steadily for almost two weeks in various situations. The menus and controls will be familiar to previous Sony users, the photos are crisp, with good color, and it gets better battery life from the little NP-FW50 batteries than my Alpha 55 did.

Yes, I have had it overheat twice. But both times on a very hot and humid Chicago summer day. I was shooting at a park in full sun, 90 degrees or so. So get in the shade and shoot on days with cooler temps. It did cool down quickly and restarted.

question

Im thinking of switching from my canon 70D to the a7II. Is it worth the change? Despite FF vs. CROP. Also what is a good inexpensive EOS to Sony mount adapter so I can use my current lenses?
Asked by: Kris
You will see a sensor performance increase in DR and low noise low light photography. As far as lens adapters go, there is good and there is inexpensive: you cannot have both in one. With the inexpensive adapters you lose auto exposure and you cannot set the aperture at all. You also lose auto focus. Here is the one you need. The principle advantages are that you save auto exposure and most of your auto focus speed. Metabones Canon EF/EF-S Lens to Sony E Mount T Smart Adapter (Fifth Generation) B&H # MEMBEFEBT5.

The A7II is a Full Frame Camera, compared to APS-C on the D7200. For landscapes the larger sensor will allow for wider shots.

question

Video length
Asked by: Khanh Duy
Sony states on page 88 of the instruction manual that continuous video shooting is possible for approximately 29 minutes (a product specification limit). The table on page 88 lists the estimated length or recording that may be captured on a memory card of a given size, but the longest time for a single clip would be 29 minutes. Pages 88-90 lists more information referring to recording times.
