Sony a7 II Mirrorless Camera
Full-Frame Alpha Stabilized
Sony has taken their line of full-frame cameras to the next level with the a7 II Mirrorless Camera, which features 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization with 4.5 stops of compensation. Operation of the 24.3-megapixel series has been streamlined with a redesigned grip, shutter release button, and customizable controls; the a7 II also features a moisture- and dust-resistant design with a magnesium alloy body and a more robust lens mount. And, with refined algorithms and better utilization of the BIONZ X image processor, the a7 II has an enhanced Fast Hybrid AF system that is about 30% faster than the previous model along with a 5 fps burst rate with continuous autofocus.
Full-Frame Sensor, BIONZ X Processor, and Stabilization
Incorporated into the a7 II's redesigned body is a full-frame 24.3MP Exmor CMOS sensor, which offers a wide dynamic range with minimal noise and rich, subtle gradations. The sensor also offers an ISO range of 100-51,200 which can be expanded down to ISO 50. Coupled with the BIONZ X processor, this camera also supports fluid performance for high-speed shooting applications, including the ability to shoot continuously at up to 5 fps and record Full HD video at up to 60p
5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Image Stabilization
Packed into the svelte a7 II is a 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization system, which compensates for five types of camera shake encountered during handheld shooting of still images and video. This allows users to confidently use any lens, even adapted lenses, for critical imaging without encountering blur from camera shake. This system will compensate for approximately 4.5 stops of shutter speed for working with a huge variety of subjects.
Enhanced Fast Hybrid AF
Utilizing 117 phase-detection and 25 contrast-detection autofocus points with a wide area of coverage, the a7 II can smoothly and quickly track fast-moving subjects throughout the frame. It optimizes for both speed and accuracy with an enhanced algorithm that improves performance by about 30% when compared to previous generations. This just-developed algorithm will more accurately predict subject movement for tracking that is 1.5x more accurate. Also, Lock-on AF tracking will analyze more information from the scene to provide dramatically improved accuracy and stability and Eye AF can prioritize a subject's pupil for excellent portraits even with a shallow depth of field.
Video Recording
Full HD and XAVC S Format
Shoot Full HD 1920 x 1080 video at frame rates of 60p, 30p, and 24p with the high-bit-rate 50 Mbps XAVC S format. This results in excellent image quality with minimal noise and artifacts without requiring a large amount of disk space. Additionally, the system uses linear PCM sound for high quality audio.

When recording internally, users will record video with a 4:2:0 sampling at 8-bit, however, to even further improve image quality the a7 II has clean HDMI output for use with an external recorder. This allows users to capture 4:2:2 uncompressed video and save in an edit-ready format.
Customizable Color Profiles and S-Log2 Gamma
To make sure the a7 II is able to use its extensive dynamic range while recording video it incorporates extensive customizable color and gamma controls. Users can adjust the gamma, black level, knee, color level, and more. Also users can use the same S-Log2 Gamma Curve that is found on high end Sony Cinema cameras that squeezes up to 1300% more dynamic range into the video signal then traditional REC709, for increased post-production flexibility.
Audio Input & Headphone Jack
The a7 II features a 3.5mm microphone input jack for compatibility with external microphones. And for users needing more the a7 II is also compatible with the Sony XLR-K2M XLR Adapter for recording professional balanced XLR audio signals with phantom power and adjustable mic/line inputs. For monitoring audio the a7 II features a 3.5mm headphone jack as well as real time audio levels for a visual reference.
Body Design
Refined EVF, LCD, and Ergonomics
  • High-resolution 2.36m-dot OLED viewfinder offers a bright, clear means for eye-level viewing.
  • Rear LCD now features a higher 1.2m-dot resolution along with a versatile tilting design that moves upward 107° and downward 41° for working from high and low angles.
  • Featuring a larger, more refined grip shape, users will find the a7 II to have a more secure feel even when large lenses are mounted.
  • Shutter release button has been reshaped and moved forward for a more natural shooting position and a decrease in camera shake.
  • Button customization is available with the ability to assign any of 56 functions to any of the 10 customizable buttons for a more personalized setup.
Magnesium Alloy Construction and Robust Lens Mount
  • Well-built design includes a magnesium alloy top cover, front cover, and internal structure and the lens mount has been redesigned with greater strength and rigidity for extra security when using larger or longer lenses.
  • Improved weather sealing for greater dust and moisture resistance, providing more protection when shooting out in the elements.
  • Optical filter on the sensor has an anti-static coating and there is an anti-dust mechanism to prevent dust from adhering to the sensor.
Connectivity
Wi-Fi and NFC
Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity enables the a7 II to instantly share imagery to mobile devices for direct sharing online to social networking, via email, and to cloud storage sites. NFC (Near Field Communication) is also supported, which allows for one-touch connection between the camera and compatible mobile devices; no complex set-up is required. Once connected, the linked mobile device can also display a live view image on its screen and remotely control the camera's shutter.
Think Tank Photo Retrospective 7M Shoulder Bag for DSLR/Mirrorless Cameras (Pinestone)

The Retrospective 7M Shoulder Bag from Think Tank Photo stores and protects a DSLR or mirrorless camera with an attached 24-70mm lens, plus an additional 70-200mm lens, a flash, and additional accessories. Alternatively, you can fit a small drone with its controller and accessories in place of your camera equipment. The bag is designed to look like a shoulder bag rather than a camera bag, but it offers dedicated compartments for camera gear.

The bag is made of durable cotton canvas that has been treated for water resistance. It has a large flap with dual turn buckles to keep it securely closed and an interior nylon lining padded with closed-cell foam for protection. The main compartment has padded touch-fastening PE-reinforced dividers for organizing your gear. A large pocket under the flap will hold and organize memory cards, cables, your wallet, keys, and other smaller gear.

A pocket on the back of the bag holds papers and documents like boarding passes safely and securely with fast access to them. A water bottle/accessory pocket on the exterior can be collapsed and strapped tight to further minimize the profile. A simple webbing rail accommodates modular pouches or a carabineer, so you can further customize the bag to your needs and gear. Carry the Retrospective 7M by the padded removable top handle, or wear it with the adjustable padded shoulder strap. You can also attach it to the handle of a rolling carry-on bag. To further protect your valuable gear, a seam-sealed rain cover is included for wet weather conditions.

SanDisk 64GB Extreme PRO UHS-I SDXC Memory Card

Designed for SD devices that can capture Full HD, 3D, and 4K video, as well as raw and burst photography, the 64GB Extreme PRO UHS-I SDXC Memory Card from SanDisk has a capacity of 64GB, is compatible with the UHS-I bus, and features a speed class rating of V30, which guarantees minimum write speeds of 30 MB/s. If your device does not support the V30 standard, this card also supports the U3 standard, which likewise guarantees minimum write speeds of 30 MB/s. Read speeds are supported up to 200 MB/s and write speeds max out at 90 MB/s. A built-in write-protect switch helps to safeguard against the accidental erasure of card data.

While this card has been designed for cameras that are UHS-I / V30 / U3 compatible, it may be used in devices that do not support UHS-I / V30 / U3. However, bear in mind that this card will then default to your device's speed class and bus rating, such as UHS-I and U1, which supports minimum write speeds of 10 MB/s, or Class 10, which also supports minimum write speeds of 10 MB/s.

As with most SanDisk cards, this memory card is shockproof, X-ray proof, waterproof, while also being able to withstand temperatures from -13 to 185°F, allowing you to take this card with you into extreme environments, such as snow, deserts, and pools. Should the card's data become compromised, you also benefit from the option to download RescuePRO Deluxe software as well as a limited lifetime warranty.

Sony A7 II Reviews

Very good for a beginner for a full frame camera

By Robert
Rated 5 out of 5
Date: 2023-09-23

This camera is a very good to get into the full frame photography. I think if pair this with a good lense than I would be an all-round good lense for any background in photography. I especially use the camera for wildlife photography. I do have to say it is a old camera and with the new A 6700 with its incredibull auto focus it is hard to say that it is the best or up there with the best cameras. It also doesn't have that fast of a continuous shooting mode but it is faster than my old camera which was a cannon Eos rebel T7.

Great camera / great price

So far I really like this camera. 3 dials for manual mode and plenty of buttons to customize. Image quality is great and it feels great in my hand. Good beginner camera! Highly recommend!

Worst decision

I thought when I read the reviews of the Sony A7II that I was buying the a great camera. What with its 1 full frame and the 27mm-70mm lens. It turns out that after. 6 months I still couldn't get as good, clear image as I could with my old Sony DCSHX300 point and shoot with a great Siess lens. Certainly this camera is not for ease of use, and if you want to be able to zoom in on anything you'll have to spend another $800 or more on a telephoto lens. Very disappointing. I sold it and went back to a great little camera from Panasonic.

Best decison I could have made

I was hesitant to get back in the big camera and lens market after my last one broke and with covid have spent recent years with a Sony point and shoot. But wow! The mirrorless a7II and lens are lighter than I expected. It's easy to use and takes great photos. Lots of options or go simple with the settings. The extra battery, huge memory card, and lens filter/protector are incredibly practical. And the bag is very nice and well made, if one wants to use it.

This is great!!!!

Highly recommend this camera for any up and coming filmmakers that are willing to spend more on a camera, this is way better than an canon I've used.

A great camera that's showing it's age

It's hard to believe this camera was launched almost 10 years ago (in 2014)!, despite that fact, the camera is still a great option as an entry-point into the full-frame world. It will show it's age in the menus, the focus speed, the connectivity (micro-usb instead of USB-C, an app that's no longer updated and doesn't work), a smaller battery that will not last long. Newer a7 cameras have considerable improvements, but if you're looking for your first Sony full-frame, don't want to deal with the used market, this will be a great choice, 10 years later, it's still a great camera

Good camera, even in 2023!

I've owned several cameras over the years, some a lot more expensive, but this is a good full frame option with a lot of features at a good price. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Yes, I have had it overheat twice. But both times on a very hot and humid Chicago summer day. I was shooting at a park in full sun, 90 degrees or so. So get in the shade and shoot on days with cooler temps. It did cool down quickly and restarted.

question

Im thinking of switching from my canon 70D to the a7II. Is it worth the change? Despite FF vs. CROP. Also what is a good inexpensive EOS to Sony mount adapter so I can use my current lenses?
Asked by: Kris
You will see a sensor performance increase in DR and low noise low light photography. As far as lens adapters go, there is good and there is inexpensive: you cannot have both in one. With the inexpensive adapters you lose auto exposure and you cannot set the aperture at all. You also lose auto focus. Here is the one you need. The principle advantages are that you save auto exposure and most of your auto focus speed. Metabones Canon EF/EF-S Lens to Sony E Mount T Smart Adapter (Fifth Generation) B&H # MEMBEFEBT5.

Asked by: Quang
The A7II is a Full Frame Camera, compared to APS-C on the D7200. For landscapes the larger sensor will allow for wider shots.
