Xcellon Mini Docking Station overview

  • 1Description

Expand your laptop or tablet into a workstation with the Xcellon USB 3.0 Type-C Mini Docking Station, which turns a USB Type-C port into multiple ports for increased productivity. The Xcellon USB Type-C Mini Dock provides two USB 3.0 (USB 3.1 Gen 1) ports with up to 5 Gb/s transfer speeds to enhance your gear's capabilities with external storage drives and printers. There's also an SD (UHS-II) card reader that supports fast transfer speeds from your memory cards, allowing you to quickly drag-and-drop photos and video files. For increasing your device's onscreen workspace, an HDMI port is on board and supports resolutions of up to 3840 x 2160 at 30 Hz.

The docking station connects to your USB Type-C laptop or mobile device via an integrated cable that sports a USB Type-C connector, which makes for quick plug-and-play and can also be used with Thunderbolt 3-equipped systems. The USB Type-C connector is reversible, so you can plug it in, no matter the direction. Aside from an easy-to-use design, charging the host laptop is made simple with Power Delivery compatibility, which allows your computer or mobile tablet to stay powered and charged by using your USB Type-C power supply. Additionally, the dock's small size keeps it portable and easy to take with your everywhere.

Expanded Computer Ports
The Xcellon Mini Docking Station expands your computer's USB Type-C (or Thunderbolt 3) port into multiple ports for connecting devices. This increases the capabilities of your laptop and provides you with a multitasking solution.
Two USB Connections
Two USB 3.0 (USB 3.1 Gen 1) connections allow you to connect storage drives and offer speeds of up to 5 Gb/s. Transfer files, photos, and videos to and from your computer.
SD Card Reader
Use SD cards with the SD 4.0 (UHS-II) reader and enjoy read speeds of up to 270 MB/s. Take the SD card from your cameras, and transfer the content onto your computer's hard drive for preserving precious memories.
4K Video Output
The HDMI connection on the docking station can output 4K video to take advantage of Ultra High Definition (UHD) displays. Enjoy sharper images and brilliant visuals with resolution support of up to 3840 x 2160 at 30 Hz when using DisplayPort Alternate Mode.
Power Delivery
The Power Delivery port allows for host device charging of a laptop or tablet. This station can automatically switch between 5, 9, 15, and 20 volts to accommodate different types of devices with the right amount of voltage.
Portability
The compact size of the mini docking station provides portable and expandable connectivity. It's lightweight with a small profile, and it has an attached USB Type-C cable that makes it ready for plug-and-play wherever you are.

    Xcellon Mini Docking Station reviews

USB 3.0 Type-C Mini Docking Station is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beats Apple's adapters by a long shot If you haven't already made the mistake of buying the comparable Apple-made adapter (I did), then before you do, BUY THIS ONE. The one downside of the new MacBook Pro for me (and probably for you, if you're on this page) is a lack of ports. Apple's adapter, for the same price, has a single USB port, an HDMI, and an additional USB-C port. This has all of those, plus an additional USB port and an SD port. On top of all that, it's well built and small enough to throw in my bag without taking up much space at all.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but with quirks This beats Apple's own equivalent adapter stone dead, but with a caveat; if you want to use it to its full capabilities you must have the power cable connected to it and not somewhere else on the computer, otherwise there won't be sufficient voltage to connect accessories. Connecting an old DVI 1280x1024 flat panel monitor from 2005 through the hub without the power resulted in the computer recognizing the monitor but the monitor failing to produce a signal. Connecting the power supply through the hub and all was solved. A star off because this is not explained in the documentation and, if the computer is up on a stand, it makes the hub, now suspended in mid-air, all the more awkward. This may have something to do with the voltage demands of the hub itself which are presumably fairly high. Unlike Apple's equivalent, it has an SD card slot -- with UHS-II, no less -- supports 4K HDMI instead of lesser standards, and fully supports USB 3.1. Accordingly, the manual warns you not to disconnect the power cable while transferring data. This is advice that on the evidence of my monitor trouble you should absolutely heed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solves my docking needs I like the pass-through charging and the HDMI capabilities, however for it's size, I'd have liked for it to have had a longer USB-C cable as I found it cumbersome to use with a monitor riser. The SD card reader is a great addition and the speed at which it works is impressive. Overall, the various ports are super helpful and the docking station works great but I would've liked a longer cord and a little less boxey design.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Affordable and flexible...but a little buggy on my Mac Xcellon makes some really nice stuff, so I didn't hesitate to try this dock out after acquiring a new Mac Pro laptop. It does work, but there a few quirks with this first iteration. 1) My USB SSD and camera cards dismount at random intervals. Not constantly, but a couple of times a day. I lost one still image to corruption and the entire contents of the SSD drive. Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, nor Stellar Disk Recovery could bring the SSD back. The drive was new and most files redundant, so I reformatted and went on. 2) These volumes always dismount when I plug in the thunderbolt power cable into the provided "powered thunderbolt" jack. Unplugging the power does the same thing. 3) My laptop usually does not recognize drives and cards already plugged into the Xcellon when it is subsequently plugged into the laptop's thunderbolt jack. I have to unplug each from their respective Xcellon slot, and then plug them in again, for the Mac to mount them. 4) There is no mini-SD card slot. Being a GoPro and drone user, I have to carry a larger, slotted SD carrier card...which is easy to lose, especially on-location. 5) Just a clarification for Mac buyers: This is not a thunderbolt 3 device. It is a USB 3.0 device. It interfaces perfectly well with the Mac's thunderbolt jack, but the speed of data delivery is limited to 5 Gbps, whereas a true thunderbolt dock would move data at 10Gbps (thunderbolt 1), 20Gbps (thunderbolt 2), and 40Gps (thunderbolt 3). This is an important distinction to TV producers and pro audio guys like me...but it may not matter to most regular users. I suspect the bugs will be worked out soon. This dock is a competitive product that is also inexpensive, small, and lightweight. It provides the connections we need most of the time and doesn't mess with other stuff. CES is this week, and I bet a more reliable version of this unit will be in B&H inventory before long.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Unstable I like that this has the most crucial connections in one place. I don't like that my USB 3 hard drive loses connection constantly when using this adapter, or the SD card I have inserted. It also makes a high pitching ringing sound when I plug a USB powered charger into this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product! Great Product. All Ports Work. Very Happy with the purchase and price. If I have to improve something could be: more long the cable. Between the apple option dock station and Xcellon, I would choose this one 100% again.
