IRIX 15mm f/2.4 Blackstone Overview

Offering a wide-angle perspective, and characterized by its premium exterior build, the 15mm f/2.4 Blackstone Lens from Irix is a sophisticated prime lens designed for Nikon F-mount cameras. Benefitting the broad field of view is an advanced optical design that features aspherical, low-dispersion, and high-refractive index glass elements to control various aberrations and distortions, as well as maintain accurate and consistent color. A Neutrino coating is also utilized to control lens flare and ghosting and achieve a high degree of contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

Complementing the optics, this 15mm f/2.4 makes use of a manual focus design for fine-tuned control, and incorporates a unique positive focus lock to secure the focusing position at any point for consistent, repeatable shooting. As the Blackstone version of this focal length, this lens is also distinguished by an aluminum and magnesium alloy exterior, engraved lens markings with fluorescent UV paint for high visibility, and extensive weather-sealing about the lens to permit working in harsh environments.

The Blackstone version of the 15mm f/2.4 lens features a durable aluminum and magnesium alloy housing and weather-resistant exterior along with inner seals, and an extra seal at the front element, to protect against dust and moisture intrusion. The metal exterior also distinguishes itself with an anti-scratch finish, and sports engraved focus distance and depth of field scales with fluorescent UV paint for high visibility when working in low-light conditions.
Wide-angle prime designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, this lens can also be used on DX models where it provides a 22.5mm equivalent focal length.
Two aspherical, three high-refractive index, and two extra-low dispersion elements are featured within the optical design to limit both spherical and chromatic aberrations, as well as color fringing and distortion, for improved clarity, sharpness, and even illumination.
A Neutrino coating has been applied to limit lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity.
Manual focus designed is benefitted by a positive focus lock mechanism to secure your focus position at any point to limit unwanted shifting of focus.
A hard click stop indicates the infinity position on the focus ring for easy use in low-visibility conditions.
Large depth of field scale benefits using hyperfocal and pre-focus techniques.
Front of lens has 95mm-diameter filter threads and the rear of the lens accepts 30 x 30mm cut gel filters to lessen the likelihood of vignetting.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to smooth bokeh.
Includes complimentary additional rear lens cap.

IRIX 15mm f/2.4 Blackstone Reviews

Size matters - replaced my 16-35mm for that extra mm

It sounds stupid to make such a big deal about 1mm, but it makes a difference for me. I was shooting in the low end of my Nikon 16-35 most of the time, so I replaced it with this (and a Sigma 24-105mm, which I also love). Much less distortion than the Nikon at 16mm - to be expected as a prime. The IRIX has a whole lot to love. It's heavy - I knew it would be because I opted for the Blackstone (metal) versus the Firefly (plastic) - but the build quality is unbelievable. This thing feels like a tank, and I love it. Now, I shoot architecture, so it's always on a tripod - if I was carrying this sucker around all day I wouldn't need to go to the gym. Aside from that, it's also super sharp and great colors. Plus the little "trap door" on the lens hood for adjusting my CPL filter is so cute!

Very Disappointed

I had high hopes for this lens. The pics were horrible. Edges were so soft looked like they were smeared. B+H customer service is tops on returns. Samyang xp 14 mm is ordered.

I use this lens with my Nikon D810. Fabulous wide angle. Not many choices for Fx at this focal length. Searched extensively, read lots of reviews, then chose this lens. Excellent build quality. Having taken many pictures with it by now, I can save you the fret and anxiety of investing in a new lens... just buy the Irix 15mm blackstone !!!!!!!

sincerely this lens was better than I expected, built in a alloy barrel with a rubber seal ring, weather sealed, Very Sharp and chromatic Aberration is None or close to none, the distortion is near to zero witch is rare in a gran angular lens witch mean the lens was made it with a good quality glass, pretty impressed with this lens, since I got it like a month ago, is mounted in my camera 75% percent of the time .... love it and looking forward to get more from lens IRIX . Totally recommend 👌

This is an absolutely amazing lens. Totally impressed with it and love the image quality I am getting with it. No regrets with this purchase and this is now my main go to wide angle lens in my kit....

I like this lens a lot. I bought it for some astro+landscape photography, and have used it a couple of times for that application. It has the cool feature of being able to lock the focus in place, so you can literally lock it and forget it.

Procured a Nikkor 15/3.5 AIS of recent vintage and did a side by side and the Irix walks all over it. Nikon has a particular look and this copy is not a dog. It doesn't compare to the Irix. The Irix handles ghosting and flare very well with exception when pointing towards the sun. The Nikkor flare and ghosting is much worse. The Irix has less distortion, is sharp as a tack, has excellent contrast, and captures a precise rendering. It's a Zeiss killer but you didn't hear that here! Wish the lens hood was metal (I fear it will get crushed some how). The Irix was on sale for $600 w/tax at BHPhoto. It just doesn't get any better folks that this folks. I have legendary Zeiss offerings and this lens is in that league in terms of image quality. Very impressive performance! Well done Irix!!!

tried two copies..

I RMA the first copy hoping the second try would resolve the very soft corners and passable center sharpness. In the end I had to RMA the second lense as well. Positives + Solid build quality + little heavy, but expected + loved the front filter thread + loved the locking focus ring negatives - very poor corner sharpness - passable center sharpness I was really hoping for a happy ending to this story. I'm a real estate photographer and videographer. This lense would have been perfect for my use case.
