Elinchrom ELB 1200 Reviews

Reliable, lightweight, fast, with a great modeling light

I purchased this kit as an upgrade from two speed lights triggered with pocket wizards punching through a Chimera Octa 2 Collapsible Beauty Dish (24). It's great to be able to buy a Elinchrom speed ring, and continue to use this awesome Chimera. The ELB 1200 HS set up outclasses my speed light rig in every possible category when shooting above sync speeds. No longer am I restrained by agonizing reliability issues of having speed lights, radio triggers, Bolt external battery, and camera bodies all get along together, only to work around long recycle times, limited punch, and slow relighting due to an overly complicated rig. It's so nice to now be liberated by not having to use that cumbersome, janky speed light rig. I'm also happy with using the HS heads while shooting in normal sync speeds as well, as I enjoy the motion blur that comes with the long flash duration of the HS head. I feel that it communicates the dynamism of the subject's action. If your story requires freezing the action, purchase an additional Action head. So, would I buy it again? I actually want three more of these kits, and an additional action head for each...and a bunch of big beautiful modifiers to put them in. It's high quality pro equipment.

Last June I bought a ELB400 and when I saw Elinchroms promo for buying the ELB1200 and get a ELB400 kit free I jumped on it. So upon its arrival everything was there but the carry case. So, if I want the case I guess I have to spend another $150.00. WHAT A DEAL......!!! What chaps me about this is that everywhere {including Elinchroms own page} its advertised as get the free ELB 400 KIT.....not parts of it!!! I love the lights but I feel a bit cheated..... Kinda like buying a car and finding out tires arent included!!

Coming from the ELB 400, Ranger RX Speed A/S, and also owning the ELC 500/1000 monolights - this pack tops everything Elinchrom has ever made. I don't even think other brands offer a light this powerful. While I truly wish this would have come out years ago, long before the ELB 400, I was thrilled when they finally announced this light and it has lived up to the wait. For me, the ELB 400 couldn't keep up with the speed that I shoot at and the hot conditions that I always find myself in. With a built in fan and high capacity batteries you can shoot with this 1200 w/s unit all day and get excellent results overpowering the sun at any time whatsoever. I feel like this light has made my art better than ever before. I can finally use a light to shoot at a fast pace which matches my style and use a variety of x-sync and HSS to get a wide range of looks to increase sales. Good lenses make a difference, but if you are a strobe shooter a good light will make a bigger difference as we can now use HSS with 1200 w/s of power to get incredible 1/8000 sec, f/1,4, ISO 100 results that few photographers are able to achieve. In my market, more photographers are beginning to shoot with strobes but I feel like this light leaves them in the dust. The ELB 400's are still great when I have to fly but any other time this is my go-to. It's a pricey kit and the larger battery makes it even harder to bite for most people but for me, it's already shown it's value by helping to increase my quality and sales. Wouldn't hesitate to pick up another.

The right pack at the wrong time

This would have been a killer product five years ago. But now? No TTL, heavy, expensive, more power than most photographers will ever need.

Very good systems with a couple annoyances

I decided to switch over from Einstein’s to Elinchrom about 3 months ago. As I had a complete line of modifiers for for the Balcar mount switching over from one systems to another is never just the costs of the lighting units. I started with the ELB 400 units with the intention to adding this ELB 1200. My main motivating factor was HS over HSS otherwise - I would have given more consideration to Profoto - but I am loving the ELB products thus far. The ELB 1200 would be a 5 star unit thus far except for 2 factors - one which is specific to the ELB 1200 head, - and the second a general Elichrom issue across most of their ELB product line. Unlike the ELB 400 heads the power cable on the ELB 1200 is directly wired into the head and doesn’t disconnect. This concerns me for two reasons. One, when packing a mobile unit size and positioning in the case is important and this creates a serious limitation in placement of the heads in any bag/case - and results in wasted space and awkward positioning of the head unit. This design also appears to be a potential future point of failure. With the cord being rigidly affixed it is exposed to wear and damage after extended use/handling. If a detachable cable wears it is easily replaced versus the cost and time to send the entire unit in for repair. The second major detractor is Elinchrom truly needs to Improve their distribution in the states. With the exception of a few “compete kits” for the ELB line many of the heads, and most of the batteries are on EXTENDED back order. It took me 2 weeks to be able to get the 2nd ELB 1200 head - and the extra batteries (both the Air and the HD) are on backorder thru February. In this day and age - (both as we consumers are impatient - and when relying on products for jobs) - I find it a real negative not to be able to order something and expect it to ship within a few days. In summary the system is very, very nice, but there are some valid issues to consider.

I love the ELB 400. It has been very reliable and portable. While I am considering the 1200, where are the specs B&H? Like head weight, battery weight and dimensions.

question

Can the ELB 1200 be used plugged into wall outlet? Like a traditional studio power pack.
Asked by: Eric
No, the Elinchrom ELB 1200 Power Pack is not designed to be used as a traditional power pack powered by plugging it into a standard AC outlet. It is a DC battery power pack. The battery may be charged via an AC outlet, but the charger itself is not designed to power the pack during photography usage.

Can you buy and additional light to go with this kit or do i have to buy a separate box and light to have 2 lights?
Asked by: Erika
As the Elinchrom ELB 1200 Power Pack has two (2) outlets on the top of the unit for strobe head usage, you may use up to two (2) strobe heads simultaneously on a single Elinchrom ELB 1200 Power Pack. If you plan to use more than two (2) strobe heads, you would then have to purchase an additional Elinchrom ELB 1200 Power Pack.

Is this compatible with their D-lite RX 4? Will I need an adapter cable to work with the RX 4?
Asked by: Dat N.
HI,ELB1200 is a separate Battery pack which will have it's own unique heads, Skyport capabilities and will replace the historic Elinchrom Ranger Pack and Heads. If you are after a power inverter I would look at the Godox LP800X to power your D-Lite 4 units.https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1186033-REG/elinchrom_lp800x_godox_portable_power_inverter.html?sts=piI hope this helps.Regards,Will HBrand Manager Lighting, Mac Group US

question

Hi, What are the differences between 'Hi-Sync' Vs 'Pro' flash heads ?
Asked by: Chulanga
It's flash duration. The Hi-Sync heads have a longer flash duration which provides a greater window for the shutter to synchronize at higher speeds.

question

Can old Ranger Rx Heads (e.g. A and S) be used with the new 1200?
Asked by: Noel
Hi,Unfortunately old Ranger heads cannot be used with the ELB 1200. Due to technology changes such as having a LED modeling lamp and the head cable connector changes, old heads are not compatible. If you have an old head and pack please consider looking at the Elinchrom trade-in plan as product is now shipping.I hope this helps.Regards,Will H
