Panasonic 8-18mm f/2.8-4.0 overview

  • 1Description

A versatile wide-angle zoom, the Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 8-18mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. Lens from Panasonic is a 16-36mm equivalent lens that blends optical excellence with durable, refined physical design for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Designed in collaboration with Leica, this lens employs a series of low dispersion and aspherical elements to realize sharp and clear imagery with controlled fringing and aberrations, and a Nano Surface Coating also helps to minimize flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy. The durable metal lens body is splash, dust, and freezeproof for use in trying environmental conditions, and a fast 240 fps autofocus drive suits both photo and video shooting in a variety of working situations.

Wide-angle zoom designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, this lens offers a 16-36mm equivalent focal length range.
One aspherical ED element, three aspherical elements, two extra-low dispersion elements, and one ultra high-refractive index element all combine to suppress color fringing, chromatic aberrations, and spherical aberrations for high clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy.
Nano Surface Coating has been applied to individual elements to control lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Fast 240 fps autofocus drive delivers smooth, accurate, and quiet focusing performance to benefit both stills and video applications.
Splash, dust, and freezeproof design benefits working in inclement weather conditions.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.

    Panasonic 8-18mm f/2.8-4.0 reviews

Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 8-18mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic UWA lens - one of the best I've used I'm a fairly experienced photographer who has settled on using the micro 4/3 system after having used larger FF systems from Canon and Sony. I do a lot of landscape and cityscape photography and so a UWA is a key lens for me. I've used UWAs from Canon and Sony and more recently the Panasonic 7-14mm for micro 4/3. This 8-18 beats them all in terms of sharpness corner to corner wide open and, more importantly, in terms of image contrast/micro-contrast. It's a really great lens and the best UWA on the market for micro 4/3 users.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent but not worth the price. For a lens of that price, I expect technical excellence. The lens is overall decent, sharp at the centre, good build, creates nice enough images. But the corners are a complete mess. The corners are a blurred/smeared dark mess of vignetting and corrected distortion at most of the zoom range. I don't think my copy is necessarily a 'bad' one. One corner seems a bit worse than the others but not significantly so. I'd say calling this lens a true 8mm is a stretch if you look at the amount of software correction applied at the wide end. A noteworthy crop is appropriate to stay within a zone that doesn't have significant dewarping and vignetting correction applied.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best choice among super wide MFT lens and filters. This is a near perfect landscape lens. It's size and weight make it comfortable and easy to use on my Olympus E-M1.2. A major reason this lens was purchased over other super wide MFT lenses is the ability to take my Lee Seven 5 series filters using the standard 67mm adapter ring Also, it has excellent sharpness and color fidelity. If you use filters for your landscape work, it is an excellent choice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens I really like this lens for my Olympus OMD E M1 Mark II kit. I have the 12-40 mm f2.8 PRO, the 40-120mm f2.8 PRO lenses and the Panasonic Leica 25mm f1.4 and needed to compliment these with something wider for landscapes. I decided to go with this lens instead of the Olympus 7-14 mm f2.8 PRO mostly because I have a similar Leica lens on a LUMIX LX100 (one of my backup cameras) and have been simply amazed at how good it is. I’ve had this new lens out shooting twice now and am completely satisfied with my choice. The lens build is robust, the feel and action is smooth as silk. Auto focus is lightning fast. The images are sharp end to end and the color rendering is superb. The photos just pop. I am excited to continue experimenting with lens and have a notion that it may become one of my favorites. You won’t be disappointed if you decide on this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wide is beautiful This is an amazing lens. Super wide angle, beautiful images can be captured. I previously owned the Olympus 7-14mm Pro, but this lens is much more useful with the filter ring on front - I can add ND filters for very bright exteriors. All metal construction and still lighter than the Olympus. Don't regret, buy it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens. The Ultimate m43 UWA lens IMHO Great lens so far. Bought it as replacement for my Olympus 7-14/2.8. The Olympus 7-14/2.8 is an amazing lens, but I found it more useful when doing serious work, but a lot less for walk-around. It was big and heavy (in m43 standards), would not take normal filters, and the adapter for 100mm square filters for it was decent, but required gentle handling. Finally the bulbous front element always made me worried I would bump it into something. The PanaLeica fixes pretty much everything I didn't like about the Olympus lens - it's smaller, much lighter (just a bit over half the weight!), and takes 67mm filters or filter holder adapters. It's the perfect walk-around lens, esp as it is also a little longer. Build quality seems really good - it may be half-a-step lower than the spectacular build quality of the Olympus PRO lenses, but it still feels very well built. Metal constructions, extremely smooth zoom and focus, and while the front element moves with zooming, it moves inside the barrel, so if you put a clear filter on top, you can assure no dust will go in. The price you pay - is that it's only 8mm wide, not 7mm, and that it's 2.8 only @ 8mm. Personally I find that a reasonable price to pay for what I get. If I need faster lens in the longer range, I can switch to other lenses. In terms of image quality - I have not yet stress tested it - but it seems sharp across the range even wide open. AF is fast and accurate as with all modern m43 lenses. It is also parfocal. Finally - as I use it on Olympus (EM1II) I was a little concerned of potential issues with purple flaring as with the Panasonic 7-14/4. I'm glad to say I have not encountered such issues yet, despite aggressively shooting into light sources...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a Spectacular Lens. Worth the wait. I've been waiting for this lens for use on my Lumix GX7 and GX8. Since Olympus released their 7-14 f 2.8, I've been waiting for Panasonic to upgrade their 7-14 f4. Finally they did with this lens and it is worth the wait. It is a good looker as well as a good performer. I like the removable lens shade. The lens is VERY SHARP, corner to corner at both the 8 mm and the 18mm lengths. No distortion is noticeable when processed in Lightroom CC. A spectacular lens!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All the rave reviews seem to be true I bought this lens after reading mulitple reviews from several sources, often comparing the other similar offerings from Panasonic and Olympus. One point I would emphasize is this lens is not light or small but is much lighter than the Oly 7-14m f2.8 and a little smaller. Pana lens 315 grams 2.89" X 3.46" Oly lens 534 grams 3.11" X 4.17" I would not want a lens weighing over a pound. Both are expensive, currently similarly priced over $1000. i am just starting to shoot with the lens and I find it amazing how close you must stand to objects like a car or golf cart to fill the frame when shooting at 8 mm. What got me attracted to this kind of ultra wide zoom is the power of shooting scenes with very close in objects in the foreground in focus ...not much opportunity yet to do that but I know this lens will do it well..... It seems to do starbursts quite well ( seven aperture blades which result in 14 rays). Occasional lens flare but not bad, I have included two photos. The first is at 8mm, second one zoomed in to about 15mm as I recall.....if you can afford it this is a great lens
