A pocketable multimedia powerhouse, the black Lumix DC-ZS70 Digital Camera from Panasonic blends a sleek form factor with versatile stills and video capabilities. Revolving around a 20.3MP 1/2.3" High-Sensitivity Live MOS sensor, the ZS70 realizes rich image quality with low noise and sensitivity to an extended ISO 6400 for working in difficult lighting conditions. The sensor and image processor also enable shooting continuously at up to 10 fps with single-shot AF, 30 fps at 8MP in 4K Photo Modes, and UHD 4K video recording at 30p. The 4K capabilities also permit working with unique Post Focus technology for choosing a specific point of focus after shooting.

Beyond the imaging abilities, the ZS70 is also characterized by its impressive 30x Leica DC Vario-Elmar zoom lens, which covers a 24-720mm equivalent focal length range, as well as 5-axis HYBRID O.I.S. to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Also notable is the camera's compact size and incorporation of both a 1.166m-dot electronic viewfinder and 3.0" 1.04m-dot tilting touchscreen LCD. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi allows you to wirelessly share imagery or remotely control the camera from a linked smartphone or tablet.

20.3MP High-Sensitivity MOS Sensor

A 20.3MP 1/2.3" High Sensitivity MOS sensor helps to realize rich image quality with reduced noise and high sensitivity to an expanded ISO 6400. The imaging and processing capabilities also avail continuous shooting rates up to 10 fps in single-shot AF mode, 5 fps with continuous AF, or 30 fps at 8MP in the 4K Photo modes.

Leica DC Vario-Elmar 30x Zoom Lens

A truly expansive 30x Leica DC Vario-Elmar zoom offers a 24-720mm equivalent focal length range along with a maximum aperture range of f/3.3-6.4. The lens construction incorporates five double-sided aspherical elements to minimize spherical aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range for increased image clarity and sharpness.

Benefitting the long reach of the lens is a powerful 5-axis Hybrid O.I.S. system that compensates for a variety of camera movements for sharper handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. This image stabilization system also enables a unique Level Shot function that automatically detects the horizontal line of the recording image and keeps it level during shooting, regardless of camera tilt, helping to achieve greater shooting stability.

4K Video and Photo Modes

The sensor and processor combination also enables 4K video recording at 30p in the MP4 format at 100 Mbps. Full HD 1080p and HD 720p recording is also possible, as well as high-speed HD and VGA recording with 120 fps and 240 fps slow-motion playback, respectively.

Besides video, the 4K capabilities also permit recording 8MP stills at 30 fps in a trio of ways:
  • 4K Burst: Just as with video recording, this mode will allow you to continuously record 8MP images at 30 fps for up to 15 minutes, making it ideal for instances where you need a fast frame rate in order to capture the best moment.
  • 4K Pre-Burst: This mode is ideal for times when you're unsure of the critical moment to press the shutter button and will record 8MP images at 30 fps one second prior to and one second after pressing the shutter button in order to give you 60 frames to choose from.
  • 4K Burst (S/S): This mode most closely follows the 4K video recording process, and allows you to playback your video, pause at the chosen moment, and use the shutter button to mark a chosen frame from the video and save it as a single 8MP frame.

Post Focus and Focus Stacking

Another attribute of the 4K capabilities is a unique focusing method called Post Focus. Working in conjunction with the contrast-detection focusing system and the intelligent Depth from Defocus (DFD) technology, Post Focus records imagery as a 4K MP4 file at 30 fps and shifts the specific point of focus throughout the burst shooting in order to offer a range of distinct focusing ranges to choose from. During playback, via the camera's touchscreen, you can then tap the specific region of the image you wish to be in focus and an 8MP JPEG file will be created. Multiple individual files with different points of focus can be created from the original burst, and focusing assist functions can also be used to gain even more precise control over the specific in-focus region.

This technology also allows for producing focus stacked images in-camera to realize a greater depth of field, especially when photographing close-up subjects. In this mode, images are recorded and saved with varying points of focus and then blended together to gain an extended depth of field.

Body Design and Built-In Wi-Fi

  • A Live View Finder (LVF) is integrated into the sleek body design to permit comfortable eye-level monitoring. This electronic viewfinder has a 1.166m-dot resolution and covers 100% of the image frame while shooting.
  • Alternatively, a rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD monitor is also available for live view shooting, image review, and intuitive menu navigation. The screen's design incorporates a 180° tilting mechanism to benefit shooting from high and low angles, as well as for taking front-facing selfies.
  • A host of manual controls offer simple, direct control over a variety of oft-used camera settings, including a control ring surrounding the lens that can be configured to adjust zoom, shutter speed, manual focus, and ISO sensitivity.
  • A micro-USB port allows you to charge the battery in-camera.
  • The included rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides you with 380 shots per charge when working with the rear LCD or 250 shots per charge with the electronic viewfinder.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi allows you to wirelessly share photos and movies to linked smartphones and tablets for direct sharing online. This connectivity also allows you to remotely control the camera from a mobile device.

Point and Shoot Camera with Vi

I wanted a point and shoot camera with a view finder and this camera met thise goals. It offers so many more features that I doubt I will ever use. More than I expected. But, so far I am very pleased with the quality of the camera and B&H service.

Excellent Camera But

Great camera with great pictures. My only complaint is the picture button, video button and off button are all together on the top right side of the camera. So, during use you accidently turn the camera off or hit the video button. Other than that, great camera.

Big camera results in a small package

I shot Nikons exclusively as a professional since the early 70s and owned a very early version of the Panasonic Lumix. This compact camera far exceeds earlier Lumix models and for me is on par with my last Nikon, a 7500. I had sold the Nikons and wanted a small camera that offered more control and flexibility than my camera phone. This camera goes the distance and more. The 700x zoom and infinite exposure and focus control are the biggest pluses to me -- -as well as the small size. My only criticism is the clunky and somewhat un predictable Wi-Fi interface. The image here was taken last week. Aperture priority, full zoom, full frame. About 1/5 sec. handheld as I remember. 2 stops underexposed to compensate for the moon against a dusky sky.

Has no faults as far as I'm concerned.

I've been on a search for this camera for years. Had had success with another LUMIX a few years ago, and when this ZS70 went on sale I decided it was a good bet, and it is! The overall design and build are superior in all features I care about. Has a popup flash, and electronic viewfinder that for me is the perfect solution to the ambient light washouts when using the monitor screen outdoors. Topping the ZS70's virtues is a superb 30x Leica zoom lens that renders just as sharp in extreme telephoto all the way back to wide angle. Says my shutterbug buddy, "Man, that camera is a keeper!"

The quality of this camera is amazing! If you are interested in photography or need a reliable camera for vacations and everyday use, this camera will be your best friend. The quality of the photos are great compared to a smartphone. I haven't printed photos yet but it's clear that they will come out great. $400 is a lot to spend on a camera but this one is very reliable. The battery can last for a few hours and the camera is so small it fits in any pocket or small bag. The camera is so easy to use with it's intelligent auto mode, perfect for family or friends who want to enjoy the moment without getting stopped by the intricate details of using a camera.

Versatile all-around camera, big improvement over my Z40

I've been using Panasonic Z-series cameras for quite a few years. I had a DC-ZS40 for a while and used it to grab photos at trade shows and conferences. It would also shoot video, but the battery wouldn't last very long - maybe 10 minutes. The battery in the ZS70 is considerably larger - I've recorded video on it for almost 50 minutes on a charge! The long zoom is handy for travel, although image quality is better with wider angles and medium zoom shots. But it is a rugged camera with good battery capacity. As a side note, I've also used it with my DMC-G85s to stream a church service, using the micro HDMI port and a Kramer presentation switcher. You can disable the viewfinder display through that port (as on the G85s), something I'm unable to do with my wife's Sony a6000. You can also stream directly using the Magewell USB Capture HDMI puck and a Micro HDMI to full-size HDMI adapter cable. (I've done the same thing with a Canon Vixia camcorder, using Mini HDMI adapter cables.)

Great Camera until it broke

I loved this camera. Got it for a cruise so I wouldn't have to take my Nikon D3500. It worked great, took great photos (in my opinion) and the zoom was super. My only complaint about the camera itself is that the viewfinder, for me anyway was virtually useless. However, using the view screen worked well. Bad news: we were on a beach in the Bahamas and the phone fell less than one foot onto the sand. It did not appear that any sand got into it but nevertheless It would not even turn on after that. Good News: When I made the purchase it came with a two year warranty at no charge. I contacted the company Panasonic used for such service and they were fantastic. Sent it back and they kept in touch ultimately telling me it could not be repaired and they send a check....less than what I paid for the camera but close enough to not be too upset. Now looking to go on another cruise and considering purchased the same camera.

I purchased this camera because I'm having worsening diabetic neuropathy and numbness in my hands. Holding my Nikon DSLR and operating it is nearly impossible. Setting this camera on AUTO and doing my online product photos with it has been much easier, I just love it and I'm sure you will too! B&H fast shipping and incredible support are amazing as well.

Will image stabilization work when in 4K (dc-zs70)? What kind of image stabilization will it have, if not the 5-axis? 2-axis? How does that work? "5-Axis compensation works in video recording except for 4K video or high-speed video recording."
Asked by: Roman
You are correct: the 5-Axis HYBRID O.I.S. does not function during 4K video or High Speed Video. No stabilization is available. I would say there is only so much this little camera can do.
