Nikon SB-5000 AF overview

  • 1Description

Embrace the power and versatility of a wireless radio-controlled lighting system with your D5 or D500 DSLR by picking up this Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight Two Flash Wireless Kit from B&H. It packs in the WR-A10 Wireless Remote Adapter and WR-R10 Wireless Remote Controller, essential accessories for making your camera radio-capable, along with two SB-5000 AF Speedlights. This setup gives you wireless remote control over multiple flashes from distances up to 164'.

  • 2 x Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight

Nikon has reimagined both on- and off-camera lighting with the SB-5000 AF Speedlight, which brings revolutionary radio control to the Creative Lighting System with Advanced Wireless Lighting and comes equipped with a world's first shoe-mounted flash cooling system that enables up to 100 consecutive full-power flashes. These features alone are enough to put it at the top of the speedlight heap, but the SB-5000 doesn't rest and provides a powerful guide number of 113' at ISO 100 and 35mm while also shrinking in overall size compared to its predecessors.

Of course, the SB-5000 AF Speedlight is fully compatible with Nikon's i-TTL automatic exposure system found in a majority of their cameras for fast, accurate operation. The radio control implemented in the SB-5000 requires a compatible DSLR using the WR-A10 Wireless Remote Adapter and WR-R10 Wireless Remote Controller in order to fully realize the power of the system. This enables the camera and flash to wirelessly control up to six groups of flashes from up to 98' away, without requiring any line of sight. Also, the SB-5000 and the radio system are fully compatible with the existing optical triggering method of older units and can even be mixed and matched for maximum versatility.

Designed for reliability as well as versatility, the innovative built-in cooling system of the SB-5000 is a first for shoe-mounted flashes. It vents heat quickly and efficiently, allowing you to fire up to 100 consecutive full power flashes without issue. It also means that the flash can be made smaller without compromising performance. This new design also ensures speedy and intuitive operation, implementing an Info button for fast access to some of your most commonly used settings.

As a standard flash the SB-5000 will not disappoint, providing a wide ranging zoom head of 24-200mm which can be extended down to 14mm with use of the built-in diffusion panel. The head will also tilt from -7 to +90° and rotate left and right 180° for complete bounce capabilities. Full sync mode support is available with slow, high-speed, 1st and 2nd curtain options.

The flash has a quick recycle time of 1.8-2.6 seconds and runs on four AA batteries. It can be powered by select external battery packs. A PC terminal can be found on the SB-5000 for further triggering options and it comes with a stand, diffusion dome, fluorescent and incandescent filters, and a soft case.

Nikon SB-5000 AF reviews

SB-5000 AF Speedlight Two Flash Wireless Kit is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Package Great product bundle and works great once getting through setup issues. The manuals point to an incorrect location on the D850 to get the radio to fire. Tried to call B&H support for help but they were not familiar with the setup. Called Nikon and got it resolved. Really like the quality and ease of use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Decent price for top notch equipment I have to admit with the Nikon "new" in-camera radio flash capability your life gets much simpler. Up to 6 groups and 16 flashes (from up to 100ft away) controlled from the menu of your D5, D500 or equivalent. By 'controlled' I mean everything from turning them on/off, setting the mode (iTTL, Auto or manual) and complete control of the adjustments from full-on to 1/256 strength). No need to go back and forth to tweak the settings of each flash. The system is also compact no separate controller boxes, etc. One thing these Speedlights are *not* is cheap specially if you're buying more than one which is why I got this kit. It saved me $$$ over buying the items individually. It includes two SB-5000 Speedlights and the required on-camera miniture WR-10 controller comes out "free". Even if you already own a WR-10 remember you can use multiple cameras also. Although is worth noting what you don't get is the hand shutter remote (available in other wireless kits). In fact B&H how about throwing it in to make this even more attractive. I put the kit to good use immediately out of the box although I must confess I end it up using a brand new photo profile. For whatever reason my existing profile (which I had used with different equipment in New Orleans a month ago) frustratingly synced the flashes but didn't trigger them. I need to see which settings in the existing profile was the conflict. I recommend this purchase unless you can get the individual pieces for less than in this kit.
