MSI GTX 1080 Ti Gaming overview

  • 1Description

Based on NVIDIA's Pascal architecture and designed to handle the graphical demands of 4K gaming, the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GAMING X 11G Graphics Card provides major improvements in performance, memory bandwidth, and power efficiency over its predecessor, the high-performance Maxwell architecture. It also introduces innovative graphics features and technologies that redefine the computer as the platform for playing AAA games and taking full advantage of virtual reality via NVIDIA VRWorks.

The front panel of the card features a variety of outputs. There are two DisplayPort 1.4 outputs, two HDMI 2.0b outputs, and a DVI-D DL output. The GTX 1080 Ti is not just about high-resolution gaming. Computationally intensive programs can utilize the GPU's 3584 cores to accelerate tasks using CUDA or other APIs.

To keep cool, even when overclocked, MSI implemented their Twin Frozr VI cooler on this card. The Twin Frozr VI cooler uses two large fans to force air through the heatsink and dissipate heat and lower the GPU's internal temperature. Because this kind of cooler recirculates air back into the case, this card works best in cases that have unrestricted airflow. There are several LED lights on the GPU, which can be controlled individually by choosing any of the animation effects available in the MSI Gaming App. You can have choose to have the LED lights respond to game sounds or music. You can pick a static color or have it breathing and flashing. Of course, you can just turn them off if you don't need them.

VRWorks
VRWorks Graphics includes a simultaneous multi-projection capability that renders natively to the unique dimensions of VR displays instead of traditional 2D monitors. It also renders geometry for the left and right eyes simultaneously in a single pass.

VRWorks Audio uses the NVIDIA OptiX ray-tracing engine to trace the path of sounds across an environment in real-time, fully reflecting the size, shape, and material of the virtual world.

NVIDIA PhysX for VR detects when a hand controller interacts with a virtual object, and enables the game engine to provide a physically accurate visual and haptic response. It also models the physical behavior of the virtual world around the user so that all interactions -- whether an explosion or a hand splashing through water -- behave as if in the real world.
NVIDIA Ansel
With Ansel, gamers can compose the gameplay shots they want, pointing the camera in any direction and from any vantage point within a gaming world. They can capture screenshots at up to 32 times the screen resolution, and then zoom in where they choose without losing fidelity. With photo-filters, they can add effects in real-time before taking the shot. And they can capture 360-degree stereo photospheres for viewing in a VR headset or Google Cardboard.
SLI Ready
With a compatible motherboard and a connecting bracket, two or more NVIDIA GPUs of the same model can combine processing power using NVIDIA's Scalable Link Interface (SLI). How the cards work together can be customized to suit your preferences. Alternate frame rendering has each alternating card prepare the next frame, essentially multiplying the capabilities of a single card's maximum capable frame rate output. Each card in the configuration can also be used to improve anti-aliasing by being able to process an image in parallel with the other cards before filtering out jagged edges.

NVIDIA's SLI HB bridge doubles the available transfer bandwidth compared to the NVIDIA Maxwell architecture. Delivering smooth gameplay, it's an effective way to enjoy surround gaming and it's only compatible with the GeForce GTX 1070, 1080, 1080 Ti, and TITAN X graphics cards.

Note: The benefits of SLI will vary based on component configuration.
CUDA
NVIDIA's parallel computing platform which enables an increase in computing performance by harnessing the parallel nature of GPU processing. CUDA compatible applications can assign intensive parallel computing tasks, such as real-time video rendering, to the GPU to process, freeing up the computer's CPU to run other tasks.
G-SYNC Ready
When used with a monitor that has G-SYNC hardware installed, the monitor's refresh rate will sync and lock with the graphics card's output frame rate. Establishing this sync removes tearing and stuttering which can result from conventional fixed screen refresh rates, especially important for gaming in stereoscopic 3D. An additional benefit of G-SYNC is reduced lag so gamers will benefit from the improved command response time as well.
NVIDIA GPU Boost 3.0
Boosts the card's clock speed in real-time based on the target temperature. If the card is running below the set target temperature, GPU Boost 3.0 will increase the clock speed to improve performance. The target temperature can be reset depending on your preference so you can have the card run more quietly for everyday tasks and older games, and run at full tilt during intense high-resolution gaming sequences.

MSI GTX 1080 Ti Gaming reviews

GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GAMING X 11G Graphics Card is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid, Quiet, and Fast All 1080ti's pretty much overclock the same. So it really comes down to how quiet you want your card. This one is very, very quiet even if you push the fans. Doesn't really come with much beside the video card. No extra game. No HDMI or Display Port cords. No SLI Bridge. The only extra it came with was a molex adapter for a power supply, and some stickers.... so they kind of cheaped out in that regard. Solid back plate and the card feels pretty sturdy. Temps are a little warm, but that is probably due to the limited ventilation in my case. I could run a more aggressive fan profile, but really see no need to since it is quiet and fast enough as is. Took one star off for the lack of any extras, but if those don't concern you it is a five star card.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Video card, and extremely powerful. So far I haven't found a game to truly put this card to the test. It's handled everything I've thrown at it, and it runs relatively cool when @ 100% load. Obviously it's still warm, but compared to other cards the cooler is fantastic. Fairly quiet card all around, and would recommend without a doubt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best gpu on the market this is probably the most high end gpu that i have ever owned. i can run games at 1440p 144fps or 4k at 60fps. Msi is my go-to gpu brand because they i haven't had a single problem with their gpus and they are known for great customer service. bhphotovideo shipped my product on time and even price matched this gpu. highly recommend

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best video card I have ever owned. I had a 980Ti before upgrading to this. Wow! This thing completely blows it and every other card out of the water. I have had great success with this card and really enjoy it. The card stays relatively cool, never going above 70C, even in torturous benchmarks and tons of gaming. These excellent thermals make it easier for the card to apply the GPU Boost technology and, essentially, overclock the card without any input or effort on my part. Sitting around 1975 most of the time is pretty awesome, the occasional dip to 1950 as the thermals creep closer to the 70C peak is still pretty fantastic. No customer fan curves, I haven't even installed MSI Afterburner to fool with the card, yet. This card is by far the best component that I have ever purchased. I would recommend it 100 times over and just can't say enough good stuff about it. I obviously cannot comment on longevity, but MSI has designed and released something very special with this card. Sure, the price is a little steep, but you really do get what you pay for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great card with great cooling DISCLAIMER: I have not OC'ed the card myself past the stock settings. The idle/load temps are spot on with what's been in reviews - low 50s idle and mid 70s under load. During all of this, the fans are whisper quiet. This is a great card if you want air cooling and no noise. I've been having BSOD's after installing this card (while idle) from nvlddmkm.sys, but this is likely not the card's fault, as it's been running fine and has been stable during stress tests (Unigine and Furmark)
