ZEISS Batis 135mm f/2.8 Overview

Mixing advanced optics with contemporary performance, the Batis 135mm f/2.8 from ZEISS is a mid-length telephoto prime designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. Characterized as an apochromat, the Sonnar optical design, along with the use of eight anomalous partial dispersion elements, helps to effectively eliminate chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and rendering. A floating elements system is also used, for consistent performance throughout the focusing range, in order to achieve even sharpness and illumination. An enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to significantly reduce ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in difficult lighting conditions.

Batis-series lenses are distinguished by their innovative use of an OLED display on the lens barrel, which highlights the focus distance and depth of field range for quickly recognizing your focusing parameters. As an autofocus lens, linear motors are used to deliver quick, quiet, and smooth focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. Additionally, this lens incorporates optical image stabilization to minimize the appearance of camera shake when working with slower shutter speeds and a dust- and weather-sealed construction lends itself to shooting in trying environments.

Short telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 202.5mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Sonnar optical concept suits the combination of a large maximum aperture and long focal length, and also contributes to notable sharpness, well-controlled flare, and high contrast.
Apochromatic optical design utilizes eight anomalous partial dispersion elements to virtually eliminate color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.
Optical image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.
Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 2.9' to infinity.
Integrated OLED display on the top of the lens shows the working focus distance as well as the depth of field range for quickly recognizing the parameters of focus in use, even when working in low-light conditions.
Linear motors benefit the autofocus performance of the lens and provide smooth, fast, and quiet operation. For manual focusing, a rubberized ring offers greater tactile control for precise placement of focus.
Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.

ZEISS Batis 135mm f/2.8 Reviews

Just what i needed

The Zeiss 135 mm is outstanding, very sharp on my Sony a7R3 it does have a very narrow depth of field at closer focusing distancing from camera .but does the job i wanted for portraiture. It is definitely a great light gathering lens even at night.

I got the 18, 40 and 135 at 30% off in Norway. I wanted a lightweight travel kit, and leave my GMs at home. Paired with the A7RIV the results are better than what I expected.

Because of neck issues, I can not use a full telephoto & during the pandemic I have been trying to photograph birds in the backyard. This does an excellent job.

Phenomenal sharpness and contrast.

Beyond excellent quality, decently low weight, quick to autofocus. Contrast is beautiful, the lens can easily keep up with my A7RIV. Try to avoid dusty areas, as I ended up with some dust in the lens very early into its lifespan. I haven't found a moment where the OLED screen is needed, but I can see the reason for having it, and it looks nice as well. If there was one gripe I have, it is that the body is prone to collecting fingerprints.

Yes ... it really does haver that 'POP'

I've been wanting this lens for months ... I finally purchased and couldn't be happier. Incredibly sharp and yes, it does have that 3D 'POP'. Auto focus was super fast. Purchased for weddings but I love snapping bird photos as well. Taken with a Sony a7iii in crop mode to get that extra reach. Another words only 9 MP's and I even cropped in a bit in Lightroom. 1/500, F/2.8, ISO-320, 0.7 EC

Impressive!

So far, I'm really impressed with this lens. It focuses quickly, I can get sharp images at 1/15th of a second, the bokeh is very nice, as is the color, and, for its speed and focal length, it's pretty lightweight. I'm looking forward to taking it with me on a trip to Paris this May along with shorter fixed focal length lenses. I considered getting Sony's 135mm f/1.8 lens, but I opted for the Zeiss Batis because of its weight-plus it's a pretty darn good lens!

No regrets

Instantly became the go-to lens in my bag. Perfectly tack sharp. Absolutely no visible CA or distortions regardless of subject or lighting conditions. That great Zeiss color pop that makes your subjects almost 3D. My only small dings on it are it doesn't have the greatest bokeh I've ever seen wide open, though still very pleasant, and it would have been nice to have a slotted opening in the bottom of the hood to adjust filters without having to take the hood entirely off.

Zeiss is much lighter but with same optical quality. Sony has a faster aperture, on/off autofocus switch, mechanical aperture ring and customizable focus hold buttons on the side. Zeiss has a aesthetic design. Both lenses provide beautiful sharp images and stunning color transmission.

I had this mounted on my A7iii. I absolutely loved this lens and all of the Batis line up of lenses. I am not sure how it would perform on the A7Rii but, I would imagine you would be very pleased with the results you would get.
