Pelican 1535 Air overview

  • 1Description

Combining strength and lightness, the silver Pelican 1535 AirNF Wheeled Carry-On Case No Foam/Empty is watertight, crushproof, dustproof, and optimized for travel. For travel by air, Pelican has aggregated available airline rules for maximum overhead and check-in dimensions with the goal of creating a case that conforms to their requirements. Of course there will always be exceptions, so it's wise to contact your carrier before departing.

Your 1535 AirNF case is made of a super-light, proprietary HPX polymer with honeycomb structural elements that is up to 40% lighter than most other Pelican polymers. This confidence-inspiring design has been drop-tested on concrete on all sides and corners while loaded with gear. Not content to stop there; the case is also tested with a 28 lb steel dart dropped from a height of 3 feet, submerged for 30 minutes at a depth of 3.3 feet, and wheels are roll tested over 1,000 yards with loads at 5 mph.

Fully-featured, the case has ABS double-throw latches that accept a user-supplied padlock, a watertight O-ring gasket, an automatic purge valve, and stainless steel hasp protectors. Users will appreciate the new, stylish conic curve lid shape, rubber overmolded handles, and an extending trolley handle. Additionally, for easier case ID, there's an attractive, removable polycarbonate card holder that may be placed on the front or side of the case.

    Pelican 1535 Air reviews

1535 AirNF Wheeled Carry-On Case (Silver, No Foam/Empty) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly as described: significantly lighter. Designed just like the regular Pelican cases that I have used for years, but as soon as I picked it up, I noticed the difference. I have not tested it to destruction, so I don't know how tough it is. I bought it to cover the risk that if carry-on storage space is filled, the airline may insist on checking my bag. I generally buy foam from a crafts store such as Jo-Ann (which sells it for DIY furniture) and then cut it to size with an electric carving knife (the best method I have found). So I bought the type of case that has no foam or dividers in it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ron I'm writing a part 2 review since my trip around the world. Recently, I took the 1535 to Arizona. Flying Southwest (they don't have weight limits for carry on), I decided to carry it on! It fit super well in the overhead. It's sized perfectly. Mainly I want to point out the rigidity of this case. Attached is a photo of my son, helping my mom cook dinner. She didn't have a step stool for him, so we used the next best thing. This case holds up! At this point, my opinion is that this case is worth the $. Take the plunge, and you won't be unhappy. Buy it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it I love peli products, this case has been reduced in weight perfectly, only drawback is the top handle, when you have the case vertically, you cant lift a full case from that handle, it snaps open and releases the handle, i almost hit my foot with it, thats something to have in count, you should only lift the bag by the lateral handle in horizontal position! apart from that, perfect job pelican

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Flew around the world. Case held up. I recently flew around the world with this case, and used it as check-in luggage. I was able to fit 5 t-shirts, 2 button down shirts, 5 shorts, 2 pants, 7 pairs of socks, 7 pairs of boxers, bathroom essentials, and 1 pair of sandals. All of that added up to about 38lbs, which is over the carry-on limit, but well under the check-in limit. I was worried about scuffs, cracks, breaks..etc around the handle and wheel areas. After being handled as check-in luggage for a week, the case held up. I can tell that it received some hard lashes, because there are permanent scars and indentations on the shell, but no cracks (that's the important part). The case is non-brittle. The wheels have stayed smooth. The latching mechanism around the scoping handle is much stronger and higher quality than it looks in images. I've read a lot of negative things about Pelican's attempt to break into the luggage world, but I'm glad that I took them with a grain of salt. 1) Pelican luggage is a bit heavier... but it is the opportunity cost to superior protection. So I'll pack a bit lighter. 2) The cases are pricey. I'm still on the fence about this, because I don't know the long-term value of this case yet. If it saves my stuff from a getting wet or crushed someday...I guess it will be worth it. 3) Pelican luggage cases are not of the same durable thickness of original Pelican cases. This is actually a good thing. Why would you need a Mil-spec case for your socks? (Images show wear/tear after check-in use world-wide)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Carry-on suitcase alternative I bought the 1535 not as a gear case, but as an alternative to a 'standard' carry-on suitcase. It's working well so far. I added a lid organizer (designed for the 1510, but fits this case with some Velcro) which keeps stuff like chargers, belts, toiletries, etc, nicely organized. The ability to purchase this without foam was also a plus. The pros: - Durable, no-frills suitcase - Lockable, and without a zipper than can be opened with a ball-point pen. Nice if you're leaving your luggage at a hotel bag check for the day. - Rollers (but see below) - Typical high Pelican quality hinges, latches, everything Cons: - Not expandable as a real suitcase might be - Rollers are hard and make a horrid noise across cobblestone and pavement. I'll try to swap them out for some urethane rollerblade wheels - Handle is a little short for a 6'4 owner - Looks like there's something more valuable than socks and underwear in there -- hope that doesn't attract attention from customs

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Pelican product as expected This is a solid case. I purchased the version with no foam or dividers as I had plenty of other dividers from other products to use. The case is lighter than the traditional Pelican case, yet seems more than solid enough to withstand serious abuse. The handle on the side is great. I do wish there was a handle on the top other than just the handle for the pullout to roll the case with.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from No handle for vertical carrying I rarely used my 1510 as it was so heavy so I sold it and got this one. There is no handle to carry it vertically. :-( The description reads "Overmolded Handles & Trolley Handle " and that sounds like three handles when it it really just two, the standard suitcase style handle and the handle on the extension arm. I'm going to trade this up for the latest version.
