Peak Design Version 1 overview

  • 1Description

Designed for the photographer, traveler, urban commuter, and everyone in between, the ash Everyday Messenger 15" Version 1 from Peak Design showcases smart features to meet your day-to-day needs. The Messenger holds a full-frame DSLR and up to three lenses, thanks to the three origami-inspired adjustable touch-fastening padded dividers. Simply remove the dividers if you prefer to carry books or overnight essentials. Your up to 15" laptop can be stored separately in a rear, padded compartment with an interior sleeve for your tablet or important documents.

Smaller accessories like extra batteries, memory cards, or even a smartphone can be tucked inside the expandable front access panel featuring color-coded stitching to help you further organize gear. An interior slip pocket is suitable for a passport or extra cash when traveling. Additional small items can be stored in the slim zippered pocket under the messenger flap or in one of the two side slip pockets. Keys can be kept handy thanks to the hidden key/ID tether with an anchor link connector in one of the side pockets.

Inclement weather is not to be feared thanks to the weatherproof waxed 500D Kodra synthetic canvas padded shell and DWR undercoat. Exterior zippers are weatherproof, and stress points are reinforced and bar-tacked. A soft yet durable poly-cotton interior is gentle on your gear, and strap ends are tucked away into the sidewalls of the messenger.

The MagLatch adjustable latching system allows your bag to expand and contract without losing shape or sacrificing time transferring contents into another bag. A magnetic clasp and four ladder locking points create multiple options for you to secure your gear. Two dedicated capture clip attachment points and a top zippered opening allow for quick camera access. The 2" wide messenger strap easily converts into a low-slung shoulder strap, while a stabilizer strap can be worn cross-body for better weight distribution, or as a trolley strap for convenient coupling when traveling with rolling luggage.

Updated V2 features (May 2018): Luggage pass-through on the rear panel, upgraded FlexFold dividers, more durable fabric on small internal pockets, and upgraded weatherproofing treatment to the exterior shell

    Peak Design Version 1 reviews

Everyday Messenger 15" Version 1 (Ash) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 52.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not for me I really wanted to like this bag. I kept it at least a month, trying to like it, to find a way to organize just a few items (7d mkii with 70-200 2.8 attached, and a 24-70 2.8). To keep body/lens upright in shooting position, the bag needed to be latched towards top latch, which made it absolutely massive, and with the quilting, it just looked like a diaper bag. Also, with these items loaded, the strap would slide all the way down. No way to tighten that I saw. And the very few pockets are very flat, so little room for accessories. Not that the strap could handle it anyway. I went with TT retrospective 20, which seems smaller, yet holds my kit plus some

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Classy Inovative Camera Bag The Peak Design team certainly put a lot of thought into this bag, lots of nice features. The noisy Velcro is gone, replaced by a magnetic latching system easily opened with one hand. The dividers in the main compartment are unique, abled to folded into many configurations. The bag is large enough to hold a full size DSLR and associated lenses but still will fit under an airline seat. Bottom of bag is protected from moisture with a rubberize insert. Carrying strap is fully adjustable and well padded. No camera bag is perfect but this one comes close !

Rated 2 out of 5 by from 2 Month Update As a photo hobbyist, I received this as a Christmas present from my wife and after 2 months of careful use, the material on parts of the inside wall are starting to fray for lack of a better word (see attached images). Considering how this is not where the velcro from the dividers touch, I don't think this is normal. In fact, in the 2nd image I've provided, the top part of the insides where no velcro hits is also starting to fray. I've reached out to Peak so we'll see how their customer service responds. In the meantime, I'm eyeing one of those Billingham bags.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from best camera bag I have owned a lot of camera bags, and this one takes the cake. It is solidly made, incredibly well thought out / engineered, and feels like it will last forever. Easily holds my D700, 3 lenses, laptop, phone, space left over for wallet/keys and plenty of accessories, and doesn't feel overburdened or bulky with all of that. I love that the dividers inside are more adjustable than any other bag I've had. I did read one review or Q/A saying there was no way to carry a tripod -- that is not true; there's a slot up top that you stick one leg through and it comes with a holder to put around all the legs once it's through the slot, to keep it there securely.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bag I received this bag as a present from my wife for the holidays. It's exactly what I wanted and I am extremely happy with what peak designs has produced. It's very well made from durable materials that are still appealing to the touch and to the eye. Living in New York City, it's important to have easy access to my gear (check), to blend in with the crowds (check), and to be able to bring all the equipment I need (check). It's not huge, and I can't fit everything I own in it at once, but it has plenty of room for a day out shooting around the city with my camera body, several lenses, and other necessities. Couldn't be happier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, versatile bag I bought the Everyday Messenger bag directly from Peak Design a fa few years ago, and it is a perfect fit for me and my needs. The space and flexibility of this design are tremendous. It is very comfortable, secure and easy to carry; I walk with a cane, so security and stability are key for my use. The bag has grown with my gear and is currently creatively-overstuffed with two DSLR bodies, five lenses,a hood loupe and a bunch of accessories (I will be purchasing a secondary bag soon for the second body and some lesser-used gear). I have traveled with this bag many times, and have never had any trouble with it on an airplane; it took a trip from California to Scotland with my wife and me last year, and still looks and works as good as new.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Bag and it Does Work for Lefties I love this bag so far. It is a bit pricey, but my wife got it for me as a gift, which was awesome! It seems to be very well built and I'd expect it to last for many years. As far as the strap, it was mentioned in another review that it only works for wearing on the left shoulder. While it does come set up for the average right handed user, the strap can be turned around and you can wear it on any shoulder. I'm a lefty so I had to flip around - just had to thread it through the buckle. Not a big deal. I do web/mobile development plus photography on the side. I can carry my 15' MacBook Pro and external hard drives with me (as I always have). But now I can also carry a camera and a couple of lenses with me in the same bag so I can shoot whenever I want. And it's comfortable to wear. Really convenient! And as silly it might sound, one of my favorite features is that it actually stands up on it's own - even with gear in it. No more leaning the bag against the wall, laying it on it's back on the ground, etc.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A perfect blend of function and safety I ordered this bag during the kickstarter. I was so excited when I got it before Christmas. I transferred all my camera gear from a backpack and a tote into this. And for fun, it will even hold a bottle of wine. It is fully padded all the way around the main compartment and the laptop compartment. Currently, mine holds a Canon 7D, Canon 70-200, Canon 50, Canon 100 Macro, Sigma 18-35 Art, TTL, Flash, flash box modifier, non-collapsible loupe, backup batteries, battery charger, remote, cords, straps, Peak Design camera rain cover, CF card 8-slot case, Surface Pro 3, and even an extra pair of eye contacts. I carried this around #ImagingUSA this past week (took the 70-200 out first due to weight). It was comfortable, easy (and if you get the PD CapturePro camera clip it is really handy to clip your camera to your strap for quick release moment captures), and very versatile. I have reconfigured the insides to varying degrees to see what ultimately will work best for me. But while walking around the Expo, I was able to have my wallet right at opening to the zipper for the main compartment, along with a water bottle. This meant that I could just swing around the right side, grab my water, zip and swing. No taking it off my back, laying it down, opening a pocket, zipping it back up, putting it back on my back, every time I wanted a swig of water. The mag-latches make opening/closing the flap super quick. Just place at the level that it best closes at. With the seatbelt straps, the durability continues. The padding is, for me, just the right amount, with the ability to flip over for a tacky side to keep it from slipping off your shoulder. I love the ability to change the length without even having to take the case off my shoulder. They have made this super easy. The bag as a whole is so well thought out. Looking at the bag, it would appear the scale and slope of the inside main compartment would be difficult to work with, but it is just the opposite. The highly adjustable internal dividers make stacking and curves so much easier. I can't imagine going to anything else now that I have used this. I hope others will enjoy it as much as I have. Peak Design has a great video to show all the features and the ability to change the strap so it can work for right or left handers.
