Allure Aqueous Metal Photo Panel (4 x 4', White Matte) is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Allure ink Jet printable Aluminum good, not great Breathing Color Allure ink jet printable aluminum is suitable for short term display, such as commercial signage and corporate decoration, but not for archival fine art printing. It comes as a pre-sized sheet with a white matte coating on the printable surface. Several sizes come with 2 printable pieces per sheet. We printed several different sizes on our Epson SureColor P800 Designer Series Ink Jet printer with out any problems. The sheets loaded easily and the 0.045" thickness (45 mil) can easily be accommodated by the printer without fear of head strikes or misalignment. The resulting prints were very good, but not quite what we expected. Even though we created a custom ICC profile, the white matte ink jet receptive coating on the aluminum diminished the brilliance of the colors slightly and the overall resulting color gamut was reduced. Two other concerns involve the grade of aluminum used for this product and the "110 brightness level". Aluminum is not created equal. Aluminum grades are produced in many different alloys which are differentiated by use and the level of contaminants. Aluminum for fine art printing is produced with a minimum of oxidizable contaminants (corrosion, brown spots) and is designated as "5052-H32" Aluminum or better. This grade of aluminum is archival. Our accelerated testing of Allure showed some corrosion (small browning spots) on the non-top coated printed surface. Top coatings, or solid over laminates, are applied after printing and are used to provide protection from moisture absorption, which causes corrosion. That's why Breathing Color encourages you to apply their top coatings or solid over laminates to finished prints. The second concern is the advertised "100 Brightness Level" of the ink jet receptive coating on the Allure aluminum. This is level of brightness is accomplished by adding an optical brightener to the white matte ink jet receptive coating. The presence of an optical brightener can be detected by exposing the substrate to a black light bulb. The surface will glow as a cool blue color if the optical brightener is present. The problem with optical brighteners is that these additives quickly degrade when exposed to ozone or ultraviolet light resulting in a red or green shade which alters the colors of the final print. From we have been told Allure has not been certified as optical brightener free. In conclusion, Breathing Color Allure aqueous ink jet printable aluminum is a great product for short term aluminum prints. It provides good color reproduction and gamut and can be used in a majority of applications. In our opinion it would not be suitable for fine art archival prints.
