Tascam DR-10L overview

  • 1Description

Styled in a white color exclusively issued for B&H, the DR-10L Digital Audio Recorder with Lavalier Mic from Tascam is an ultra-compact, digital recorder and lavalier microphone combo with a screw-down locking connector compatible with most Sennheiser lavalier mics. It can be used for both the creative filmmaker and the busy videographer, and is also suitable for location recordings such as live events, and more.

Featuring 24-bit mono and 48 kHz BWAV (Broadcast Wav) file format, it records up to 32GB on microSD or microSDHC media. There is a 1/8" headphone-output jack for easy monitoring of recordings and the recorder runs on a single AAA battery, which records up to 10 hours.

Furthermore, the limiter function automatically reduces input level to prevent distortion and the dual recording mode records to two files simultaneously with different gain levels. The easy-to-read OLED display has a wide viewing angle, and the built-in micro-USB Type-B port provides for external power and easy file transfer to a computer.

Finally, designed as part of a complete audio toolkit, the DR-10L delivers a flexible set of solutions for any audio production issue.

Stealth Fighter
Building on the success of the DR-10X and the DR-10SG, the DR-10L marries the industry-standard TASCAM portable mini-recorder with a high-performance lavalier mic. Easy-to-use – and easy-to-wear – the DR-10L can become your secret weapon in the war against poor production audio.
Dual Recording Records Two Files Simultaneously at Different Levels
The DR-10L has several features to prevent distorted audio, but the most secure is dual recording. This feature captures a copy of your signal at a lower level, as a safety track in case of distortion.
Automatic File Closing Saves File Data Before the Battery Runs Out
You can always monitor the battery level on the easy-to-read OLED display. If the battery runs out in the middle of a recording, the unit will automatically save the file before turning off so your take isn't lost. The case is designed so that the batteries can be changed quickly, without removing the recorder from the camera shoe mount.
Automatic Level, Limiter, and Other Functions
If the input sound level is too low or too high, an automatic level function can increase or decrease the recording volume to an appropriate level. The limiter prevents distortion caused by sudden input overloads. These functions save you from worrying about recording-level settings in situations when there is no second chance.
Compact and Lightweight Body
The DR-10L has been designed to be small, light, and easy to conceal. Perfect for on-camera talent, documentary subjects, or entire wedding parties. The DR-10L can easily be hidden away so that nothing comes between you and the perfect shot.
Operates up to 10 Hours Continuously
One easily obtained alkaline AAA battery powers the DR-10L for up to 10 hours continuously. The DR-10L can also use disposable lithium or rechargeable NiMH batteries.

    Tascam DR-10L reviews

DR-10L Digital Audio Recorder with Lavalier Mic (White) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 135.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best LAV kit for the price! I did an interview of a bike shop manager in Oakland, Ca using the DR-10L. We recorded inside the shop and out on the busy street (Broadway and 19th). It was very nice not having to worry about the distance from the camera and the potentially overwhelming street noise. I liked having the shop and street sounds but at a much lower background level. I love my Rode shotgun mic for similar reasons but it is more limiting than the LAV style mic. I can video across the busy street with the LAV. That wouldn't work with the shotgun. I like the price of this package especially when compared to wireless kits. It is less bulky than my H1 with a LAV.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ode to Zoom H1 (R.I.P.) Zoom H1, you were a good, reliable, great sounding friend. But you didn't have dual record. Your headphone jack was on the side and not the top, which made it awkward and difficult to fit in a pocket, and it was surprisingly difficult to find a 90 degree 3.5mm microphone that was of reputable quality. You did not lock the microphone in place. I never used your on board microphones, and you were too tall. May your new owner from Craigslist treat you well. As for me, I have moved on and found perfection (...so far). Tascam DR-10L(bodypack audio recorder), Lumix LX100 (jacket pocket camera), Aputure AL-M9 (pocket light), Joby Gorillapod Focus (octopus)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'd definitely buy again Mine is fairly new and have only used a couple of times. I use it for interview/events. For my purposes the sound quality of good. If you are coming from a Tascam DR-05 or a Zoom H1, the DR-10L is much more compact and a better solution laving talent. Battery life seems fine. I am recording at the medium low gain setting; higher than often clips. Raising volume levels in post (Audition) is easy and the sound quality is good. The Sennheiser mic mount makes this better than a 3.5mm jack as it will not inadvertently come off (sure you can gaff the Zoom). I've got a wireless lav set up, but this Tascam is easier to work with less to travel with.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very useful compact recorder I've used this recorder several times for sit-down interviews. The audio quality is quite good and the battery life is long. I'm not crazy about the white color for the clip, which tends to show very obviously if it is exposed. The recorder records in 10 minute increments, so you have to join the clips on longer interviews. The settings are pretty easy to use, once you understand them. The screw-in connector is good because the plug will not accidentally pull out. The headphone jack allows for monitoring of the recording. Keep in mind that this is an audio only recorder and will not record into your video recorder. It is a dual system.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Can't set recording levels. That's a huge problem. I really wanted to like this product. Mic is great, recorder does a good job. But there's one thing they don't tell you. THERE'S NO WAY TO SET AUDIO LEVELS!! you can set mic gain in one of 5 different positions and hope that your levels fall where you want. For something the is supposed to be a pro level piece of equipment that's a huge fail. And considering this is not mentioned in any description of the product anywhere I call it a huge fail overall. Would definitely NOT purchase it again. Save your money and get a proper wireless set up and be done with it. This thing is not great

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good for backup purposes, but have failed on us before I was super skeptical when they first came out and my studio bought them, but I've become a convert over the last year or so. There have been times when wireless lavs dropped out on big shoots, and having these in place saved us. That said, the on/off/record buttons are badly designed, the lack of easily monitoring the unit, and chunky size are all annoying. We did have a shoot where this thing recorded horrible static over all our audio. Fortunately it was our backup, but what if we'd needed it? PROS: Sound quality is surprisingly excellent Mic quality is good, tie clip included Interface is simple and easy to understand Good battery life - generally 4+ hours of record time CONS: Can't monitor audio once you walk away No ability to start/stop recording remotely

Rated 1 out of 5 by from AWFUL! I want so badly to like these, but they have now failed on me twice at weddings! I've used the SD cards that Tascam recommends, I have fresh batteries in them and they simply shut off while recording. After the first time, I put a piece of tape over the on/off switch to keep it from being bumped while in someone's pocket, but that did nothing. I might have a bad unit, but the customer service at Tascam is awful. They don't care, and told me there's nothing they can do...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tascam DR10L Recorder, so far - so good I've used this little recorder and mic system on 4 events so far and have to say I'm very impressed. I typically use XLR mics with pre-amps, but have discovered this lav mic and recorder are a much easier system, with little to no sound quality degradation. In fact, when trying to isolate voices from back-ground noise, this system frequently provides the most usable audio track. I typically leave the pick-up at the mid point and all is good. And synching the audio to video is very easy with my video software, Cyberlynk Powerdirector. The Tascam is a very good product, and at $200 a great value.
