Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM Overview

Characterized by its unique design and close-up capabilities, the EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM from Canon is a 56mm-equivalent prime lens designed for APS-C-format DSLRs. Offering a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification and a 5.1" minimum focusing distance, this lens further distinguishes itself with an integrated Macro Lite LED on the front of the lens to provide additional illumination to close-up subjects. Aiding its ability to reproduce small subjects at life size, the optical design incorporates one aspherical element to reduce spherical aberrations in order to provide a high degree of sharpness and clarity.

Benefitting the optical attributes is a Hybrid IS image stabilization system that serves to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper results when working handheld and in difficult lighting conditions. A lead screw-type STM stepping motor also benefits handling by producing fast, smooth, and quiet autofocus performance to suit both stills and video applications. This AF motor can be manually overridden at any time by turning the dedicated focusing ring for making fine-tuned adjustments.

Standard macro prime designed for APS-C-format EF-S-mount Canon cameras, this lens offers a 56mm equivalent focal length.
One glass-molded aspherical element is featured in the optical design to control spherical aberrations and deliver a high degree of sharpness and clarity.
Maximum 1:1 magnification and a minimum focusing distance of 5.1" permits making life-size imagery of close-up subjects.
Built-in front-facing Macro Lite LED can be used to produce additional illumination to subjects when working at close distances. The light can be configured to illuminate only the right or left side, or both sides, and the brightness can be adjusted in order to produce greater visual depth and reduce shadows caused by the close proximity of the lens to the subject.
Hybrid IS image stabilization minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
Lead-screw-type STM stepping motor offers fast, quiet, smooth, and accurate autofocus performance that is ideal for video recording as well as still shooting.
Full-time manual focus mode (AF+MF) lets you instantly switch to manual focus control in AF mode for making fine-tuned adjustments.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm and bright f/2.8 maximum aperture help to render smooth and pleasing bokeh to benefit shallow depth of field imagery.

Good Lens if you want to give Macro a try

I got this because I wanted to be able to get up close and personal on some small items. I've wanted to give macro a try for quite a while and finally decided to jump in. I didn't want a lens that would be a thousand dollars so I opted to give this one the green light. I have taken a few shots that came out very nice, nothing special but just some stuff. I will be exploring more and more during some off time to see what I can come up with of interest! The lights built in make it convenient when getting up close and they have about 6 modes and when you are really close they work great. It's very light but seems sturdy as well. The focus on this one I am watching it seems temperamental and stops focusing. Not sure if it's a learning curve thing or an issue yet. The clarity of the images and the contrast are what you would expect from a lens in this price range and it is very expectable.

So far, I am still discovering how to use this as I focus on macro photography, but so far, so good! I especially like the built-in lighting on the lens itself. Great idea!

question

How well does this lens work for portrait photography? Specifically head shots.
Asked by: Tim C.
The crop sensor 56 mm equivalent magnification is not an ideal focal length for head shots, but is usable. A faster 50mm lens (80 mm crop equiv. mag. ) is a more flattering choice for most subjects and will provide less facial feature distortion and nicer bokeh and a better working distance range. An 85 mm lens would be better. This is a excellent macro lens and a very good landscape lens.

Is this equivalent to the 50mm for aps-c camera?
Asked by: Preya
It would be close. As the APS-C sensor used by Canon in their EOS Digital SLR cameras have a 1.6x crop factor instead of the standard 1.5x APS-C crop factor, the Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM Lens would be the equivalent of a 56mm lens used on a full-frame camera.
