MXL R144 HE overview

  • 1Description

The R144 HE from MXL is a figure-8 ribbon microphone designed for recording vocals and instruments in commercial and project studios. The Heritage Edition version of the original MXL R144 ribbon microphone comes finished with a silver frost body and a chrome grille.

Its figure-8 polar pattern allows pickup of sounds from the front and back of the mic, while maximizing sound rejection from both sides. This provides a directional focus in front of the microphone, and allows room reflections behind the mic to be captured. Its 20 Hz - 17 kHz frequency response features a slight boost in the upper and lower midrange frequencies. This makes it well-suited for vocals, horns, electric guitars, bass, strings, and drum rooms, which often benefit from softened highs and thickened mids. The aluminum ribbon element, 1.8 microns thick and 47mm long, handles up to 130 dB SPL without distortion.

The supplied shockmount decouples the mic from a stand, reducing the pickup of rumble. The provided aluminum flight case ensures the mic's safety during storage or transport.

  • Dynamic ribbon mic does not require phantom power
  • Figure-8 polar pattern captures more room sound than cardioid mics do
  • Aluminum ribbon element is 1.8 microns thick and 47mm long
  • 20 Hz – 17 kHz frequency response for mellow high frequencies
  • High maximum SPL allows safe use on loud sources, such as electric guitars and horns
  • Includes shockmount for reduced transfer of rumble and unwanted vibration through the mic stand
  • Aluminum flight case for safe transport and storage
  • Microfiber cleaning cloth included

    MXL R144 HE reviews

R144 HE Heritage Edition Ribbon Microphone is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Impressive ! I bought this mic as an experiment, figuring for $ let's see what this is about. I was looking to add an affordable ribbon mic to offer a different aural tone. My first usage was on an acoustic guitar; this turned out to be a bit disappointing as it was inly ok. Next up was on a banjo where this mic was quite impressive, giving very clear tones and a keeper track. Then we tried it on an amp; again very impressive and another keeper track. It also gave a nice softer quality to vocals. Overall, an extremely good value !! Highly recommended, particularly at this price; you could easily spend hundreds more and not get a better mic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great cost\quality ratio! I use this for live recordings of trumpet, trumpet ensembles and brass groups. Ive used it in both live halls and in my home studio. Ribbon is the way to go for horns (and vocals of course). Very warm and complimentary to trumpets and deals very well with high SPLs. I use it with a Zoom H4-N and an M-Audio Audio Buddy. A preamp for some added gain is def needed as well as a GOOD mic cable. Tilt the mic back (or forward depending on acoustic environment) about 30 degs or so at about 8 feet back and 8 feet up in a nice hall or church. You will NOT be disappointed. Ordering a second one soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from MXL R144 big Ribbon sound Being an orchestral music composer, sound is everything and when using mics I try to not eq anything but keep the natural instrument and the microphone natural. For under 100 bucks these mics deliver a great sound on toms, vocals and nylon string guitar. That is what i have recorded so far. With this ribbon mic you do need a thick pop filter since the aluminum element is very pop sensitive, but well worth having in the collection. For vocals this mic set up with a Neuman 87 made a great pair, a bit more sizzle on the 87 and warmth and bottom with a clear mid range for the R144. I have two of these mics and will buy a another pair to try out on timpani, electric guitar cabinets, and the grand piano.I would reccomend these mics to anyone who needs a sensitive mic without spending 4k on a ribbon.Michael Schumann Smith - Composer@

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very happy My studio has many mics but I didn't have a ribbon mic. Given the low price I wasn't expecting the quality of this mic. I used it to record the vocals for a grunge/punk band in studio that week. The mic has a transparent flat response and I didn't get the harsh ss's I often get from expensive condenser mics. I used the inexpensive Studio projects VTB1 preamp on a no tube setting, and was very impressed with the quietness and quality of the recording.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Old School Sound I bought this microphone expecting to return it. What a surprise I got when I mounted and plugged into our digital board and it reproduced my voice in a warm, clean way. We bought two more and use 3 of them for podcasting. Our EQ'ing is minimal and the sound makes all the difference in the world. The shock mount is quality and the case is a nice bonus. I have not tried with an instrument nor used for musical applications. Enjoy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Bang for the Buck Used on male vocal recordings with Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 at 3 o'clock, which was dead quiet at that gain setting. I cut the low-end a couple dB and raised the top the same amount, and it was warm, detailed and big. I read the Sound On Sound review by Paul White where he used the same EQ setting and found the R144 compared very favorably side-by-side with his Coles 4038. At 1/16 the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very natural reproduction This mic has a very natural sound to it. You don't get the proximity effect you do with a conventional dynamic mic. This works best in the studio because you can't get it very loud without feedback. As you face the mic your voice passes over the ribbons and exits the rear grill so there's no good way to isolate it from the monitor in front of you, hence, it is very omnidirectional. But for recording or broadcast use you get none of the off axis coloration and proximity effect so it sounds like the person using the mic is sitting across the table from you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible for the money I'm using it primarily for a drum overhead, but also for acoustic guitar. It has a really nice, sweet sound, and it seems well built (we'll see). I'm still experimenting, but already, I have been able to get really nice sounds. It has none of the harshness of condensers in the same price range. It does need a lot of gain, as people say, and the pickup pattern is going to take some figuring out. I'm also worried about the fragility inherent in the design, but I think it will be fine (not using it live). The included case and mount are nice too. I like it a lot.
