question
It's clear that everyone loves this lens for nature and sports. I'm wondering about its versatility. What is your experience with portraiture at or near the lower end of the zoom range? FYI, I have the Zeiss Batis 135 (and am considering a return) and must stop it down to at least 4.5 if I am at all close to the subject to obtain a usable DOF. Portraiture results? Or is this strictly useful for nature and sports?
While this lens is popular among nature and sports shooters, it can do very well for those shooting portraits from a greater distance from the lower end of the zoom range.

Does the specified weight (1395g) include the tripod foot?
I assume it does, because the foot is supplied with the lens, not as an optional accessory, and the ring to which it attaches is not removable.

Should steady shot be turned off when using the stabilizer on this lens?
No, the in body stabilization on cameras is best left on when using the stabilization on the Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Lens. These 2 forms of stabilization work together for superior performance.

I used this lens and a7R3 to photograph trumpet swans in RAW. The images of trumpet swans do not look sharp at 100% zoom or Actual Pixels View on the Sony Viewer software, do you experience the same effect? Thank you.
Yes, I set the Shutter Speed at 1/2000th or faster, the ISO 1000 and the Aperture wide open for swans in flight. I am trying to find out is Sharpness not Blur at 100% zoom on the Sony Viewer sw. Another thing I noticed is the landscape photo looks grainy at 100% zoom but looks good at 50% zoom. I think this is the inherent characteristics of the CMOS sensors (CCD, CMOS). I thought the BSICMOS got better but it is not to the degree I expected. Thank you.

Trying to figure how to mount to my Manfrotto 509 Pro video tripod. I should be able to just remove the tripod's plate and just slide in the 100-400 tripod mount, right?
You need to screw the plate that came with your tripod onto the lens collar and then you can place the lens on the tripod. Without the plate it will not be possible to place the lens on the tripod head.

Mounted on a Sony a7R2 can reach be extended ...
Mounted on a Sony a7R2 can reach be extended optically without teleconverter?
Yes.
With standard digital zoom, pictures captured by the image sensor of the camera are enlarged using digital signal processing. Therefore, as the magnification level increases, signals to be estimated also increase and can reduce the image quality.
When using Clear Image Zoom , however, zoomed images are captured close to the original quality when shooting a still picture. The camera first zooms to the maximum optical magnification, then uses Clear Image Zoom technology to enlarge the image an additional 2x, producing sharp clear images despite the increased zoom ratio.
The Smart Zoom™ feature allows images to be zoomed without losing picture quality. The central part of the picture is trimmed and enlarged without image processing.

Would you recommend this lens or the new version of Sony's 70-200mm lens for landscapes and wildlife photos for a very amateur photographer?
I am also an armature photog. It really depends on what you are shooting. I sometimes find 200mm is not long enough. However depending on the camera and subject, I am able to blow up the image with no loss of quality.
