It's clear that everyone loves this lens for nature and sports. I'm wondering about its versatility. What is your experience with portraiture at or near the lower end of the zoom range? FYI, I have the Zeiss Batis 135 (and am considering a return) and must stop it down to at least 4.5 if I am at all close to the subject to obtain a usable DOF. Portraiture results? Or is this strictly useful for nature and sports?
Asked by: David F.
While this lens is popular among nature and sports shooters, it can do very well for those shooting portraits from a greater distance from the lower end of the zoom range.

Does the specified weight (1395g) include the tripod foot?
Asked by: Stephen
I assume it does, because the foot is supplied with the lens, not as an optional accessory, and the ring to which it attaches is not removable.

I used this lens and a7R3 to photograph trumpet swans in RAW. The images of trumpet swans do not look sharp at 100% zoom or Actual Pixels View on the Sony Viewer software, do you experience the same effect? Thank you.
Asked by: George
Yes, I set the Shutter Speed at 1/2000th or faster, the ISO 1000 and the Aperture wide open for swans in flight. I am trying to find out is Sharpness not Blur at 100% zoom on the Sony Viewer sw. Another thing I noticed is the landscape photo looks grainy at 100% zoom but looks good at 50% zoom. I think this is the inherent characteristics of the CMOS sensors (CCD, CMOS). I thought the BSICMOS got better but it is not to the degree I expected. Thank you.

Mounted on a Sony a7R2 can reach be extended ...

Mounted on a Sony a7R2 can reach be extended optically without teleconverter?
Asked by: Kevin W.
Yes. With standard digital zoom, pictures captured by the image sensor of the camera are enlarged using digital signal processing. Therefore, as the magnification level increases, signals to be estimated also increase and can reduce the image quality. When using Clear Image Zoom , however, zoomed images are captured close to the original quality when shooting a still picture. The camera first zooms to the maximum optical magnification, then uses Clear Image Zoom technology to enlarge the image an additional 2x, producing sharp clear images despite the increased zoom ratio. The Smart Zoom™ feature allows images to be zoomed without losing picture quality. The central part of the picture is trimmed and enlarged without image processing.

The Lee 100 Filter Holder will work with the Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM Lens. Make sure you get the LEE Filters 77mm Adapter Ring to go with it. The B&H item number is LEAR77.

How is this as a video lens? Is it reasonably parfocal when focus is set at maximum zoom, and then the lens is zoomed out? Will it adjust autofocus mid-zoom, or does it wait until the zoom is complete? Does it have much focus breathing?
Asked by: Aaron
I have never used it for video, but it is an excellent lens for stills.

Perhaps a dumb question, but why would one want to use a teleconverter on this lens instead of just using APS-C mode?
Asked by: Diana
A teleconverter allows the camera to record at the full-frame, full image resolution for the photo instead of cropping the sensor and resolution in APS-C mode. It provides much more detail and printing capabilities when shot full-frame and full-resolution.
