Super-Telephoto Versatility
Targeting sports, wildlife, and action shooters, this FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Lens from Sony will satisfy many photographers and videographers who are looking for a bit of extra reach with their full-frame E-mount camera. As a member of the G Master line, it is designed with outstanding resolution and sharpness in mind, along with a relatively compact size, responsive autofocus, and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization for outstanding performance at all focal lengths.
G Master Optics
Characteristic of the G Master line, this telephoto zoom offers excellent optical performance with both high sharpness and smooth bokeh.

  • Two extra-low dispersion elements and one Super ED element control chromatic aberrations and reduce color fringing for increased clarity and color fidelity.
  • Nano AR Coating reduces surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
  • Far-reaching telephoto zoom sports a f/4.5-5.6 maximum aperture range that is an ideal compromise resulting in a lightweight, compact design and bright enough performance for working in available lighting conditions.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Autofocus and Image Stabilization
  • Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor AF (DDSSM) and internal focus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with more natural, intuitive manual focus control.
  • Floating elements system benefits image quality when working at the 3.2' minimum focusing distance with 0.35x magnification.
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
Durable Design and Intuitive Handling
  • Zoom torque adjustment ring will help provide users with added control over the zoom function of the lens.
  • Focus range limiter and focus hold controls offer more intuitive handling and faster performance when photographing moving subjects.
  • Removable rotating tripod mount permits quick switching from horizontal to vertical shooting orientations.
  • Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.
  • The front lens element features a fluorine coating to protect against smudges and dust from adhering to the glass surface.
  • Compatible with FE 1.4x and 2x teleconverters for reaching focal lengths up to 800mm.

Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Reviews

My most used wildlife lens

A+ lens. Add the 1.4 Teleconverter and you now have a 560mm with excellent image quality. Also does really well with the 2.0 TC but needs good light. Excellent image quality even at 800mm. I carry this lens and both TC's 90% of the time. I have this lens and the 200-600 which is also fantastic but it is on the heavy side.

My standard lens for my A1. Works without sacrifice with the 1.4 tc for 560 mm which is perfect most of the time. I also have the 200-600 but the weight is a bit much for everyday use. Unbelievable image quality even with the 1.4 tc. Birds in Flight with the eye tracking is nothing short of amazing! Super-fast autofocus.

It's a great lens you won't be disappointed

This is a great lens and did what I expected on my African safari. For two weeks we photographed animals large and small and it performed very well on my Sony a7R4. I am now post processing my photos and I'm very pleased with the results. Since this is a top-end lens my expectations were high and I was not disappointed. It's fast, is flexible and has very good resolution/and color.

Excellent addition to my gear!

I mainly photograph running dogs. This lens paired with my A9II makes it feel easy to get gorgeous, in focus, perfect shots even as dogs are running straight at me. Photo attached is 400mm f/5.6 1/2500 ISO250, minimal crop.

My favorite lens

I have owned and used the Sony 24mm, 24-105 and 70-200 lenses. I also have the 24-70 2.8. Despite other lenses being more compact, the Sony 100-400 GM is on my a7Riii all the time. I only switch when I want to photography something specific. Many people say the 70-200 is a good all around lens, but I now use the 100-400 instead, which has replaced the 70-200. I love the close focusing distance, fast focus and image quality from the 100-400GM. And yes, I use it mostly hand held, which is a testament to the overall handling of this lens.

I have this lens along with the 200-600 and this is the most used by far. Super detail and color. I use it mostly for closeup/macro shots and for birds with the 1.4 TC. A truly outstanding lens on my Sony A1.

The purchasing experience with B&H was excellent as always. The lens is very manageable for hand holding, the OSS works well and the optics are superb! Typical GM lens in terms of performance, build quality and handling! I also have the 70-200mm f2.8 GM ver1 lens and the 100-400 handles very much the same way. Quick, accurate focus and very good tracking. The fact that it is not internal focus is really the biggest difference. The bokeh is great with the long end compression this lens has! Very happy with this one and the fact that the minimum focus distance is so close is just an added bonus when it comes to macro shots! Highly recommend!

question

It's clear that everyone loves this lens for nature and sports. I'm wondering about its versatility. What is your experience with portraiture at or near the lower end of the zoom range? FYI, I have the Zeiss Batis 135 (and am considering a return) and must stop it down to at least 4.5 if I am at all close to the subject to obtain a usable DOF. Portraiture results? Or is this strictly useful for nature and sports?
Asked by: David
While this lens is popular among nature and sports shooters, it can do very well for those shooting portraits from a greater distance from the lower end of the zoom range.

Does the specified weight (1395g) include the tripod foot?
Asked by: Stephen
I assume it does, because the foot is supplied with the lens, not as an optional accessory, and the ring to which it attaches is not removable.

I used this lens and a7R3 to photograph trumpet swans in RAW. The images of trumpet swans do not look sharp at 100% zoom or Actual Pixels View on the Sony Viewer software, do you experience the same effect? Thank you.
Asked by: George
Yes, I set the Shutter Speed at 1/2000th or faster, the ISO 1000 and the Aperture wide open for swans in flight. I am trying to find out is Sharpness not Blur at 100% zoom on the Sony Viewer sw. Another thing I noticed is the landscape photo looks grainy at 100% zoom but looks good at 50% zoom. I think this is the inherent characteristics of the CMOS sensors (CCD, CMOS). I thought the BSICMOS got better but it is not to the degree I expected. Thank you.

Trying to figure how to mount to my Manfrotto 509 Pro video tripod. I should be able to just remove the tripod's plate and just slide in the 100-400 tripod mount, right?
Asked by: Mary
You need to screw the plate that came with your tripod onto the lens collar and then you can place the lens on the tripod. Without the plate it will not be possible to place the lens on the tripod head.

Mounted on a Sony a7R2 can reach be extended ...

Mounted on a Sony a7R2 can reach be extended optically without teleconverter?
Asked by: Kevin W.
Yes. With standard digital zoom, pictures captured by the image sensor of the camera are enlarged using digital signal processing. Therefore, as the magnification level increases, signals to be estimated also increase and can reduce the image quality. When using Clear Image Zoom , however, zoomed images are captured close to the original quality when shooting a still picture. The camera first zooms to the maximum optical magnification, then uses Clear Image Zoom technology to enlarge the image an additional 2x, producing sharp clear images despite the increased zoom ratio. The Smart Zoom™ feature allows images to be zoomed without losing picture quality. The central part of the picture is trimmed and enlarged without image processing.

Would you recommend this lens or the new version of Sony's 70-200mm lens for landscapes and wildlife photos for a very amateur photographer?
Asked by: Deborah
I am also an armature photog. It really depends on what you are shooting. I sometimes find 200mm is not long enough. However depending on the camera and subject, I am able to blow up the image with no loss of quality.
