View the sun through four different filters with just the touch of a button using the Daystar Filters Solar System Filter Wheel. Easily switch from Hydrogen Alpha for prominences or surface detail to Helium to Calcium and back again, effortlessly and accurately, using just one telescope. The four filters provide a range of viewing options of the sun, and are recommended for use with refractors, Schmidt-Cassegrain, and Maksutov-Cassegrain optical tube assemblies of any aperture with focal ratios between f/27 and f/35. Barlow lenses or stop-down masks may be required to reach the recommended focal ratios, and ERF and UV/IR-cut filters are required for proper and safe use and performance. For mounting, the wheel accepts standard Quantum plates, providing mounting to standard T-threads, SCT backs, or 2" drawtubes.

The wheel uses the same electronic temperature tuning system as regular Quantum filters, which is accurate to 0.1Å, and the wavelength can be offset as much as 1.0Å in either direction for Doppler shift compensation and to highlight specific areas. The system is outfitted with an RS-232 serial port that allows it to be connected to a computer and enables remote viewing of the wavelength display and control of the tuning. It runs on 12 VDC power and comes with a 6' power cord and a set of international outlet plugs for US, EU, UK, and Australia.

This version of the Quantum system is designed for professional research-grade users who require tight tolerances and improved quality. To accomplish this, Daystar improved homogeneity and on-band transmittance values across the substrate surface, so these filters require additional quality control steps, as well as additional fabrication and testing times.

Hydrogen-Alpha 0.4Å

  • Calibrated for the H-alpha wavelength at 6562.8Å
  • Anti-reflection coated BK7 glass
  • Mainly used to study the photospheric, chromospheric, prominence, and atmospheric areas of the sun
  • Specifically improves solar surface contrast and fine chromosphere details

Hydrogen-Alpha 0.7Å

  • Calibrated for the H-alpha wavelength at 6562.8Å
  • Anti-reflection coated BK7 glass
  • Reveals prominences, a detail of the chromosphere projected against the blackness of space, in high contrast
  • Through a 0.7Å filter, prominences appear larger than when viewed with narrower bandwidth filters

Helium D3 0.3Å

  • Calibrated for the Helium D3 wavelength at 5875.61Å
  • Anti-reflection coated BK7 glass
  • Helps to see sunspot detail, super granulation on the surface, plague, emission in flare footprints, absorption following magnetic lines, and small prominences

Calcium II H 5Å

  • Calibrated for the Calcium II H-line wavelength at 3969Å
  • Anti-reflection coated BK7 glass
  • Used to study the solar atmosphere and reveal complex temporal variations in the chromosphere
  • The H-line for visual observations is much closer to the visual spectrum and easier to see as a high-contrast violet color
