G-Technology Shuttle XL overview

  • 1Description

Built to support for video workflows on location and in the studio that require large capacities, high-powered performance, and multiple RAID configurations for multi-stream 4K, 8K, and VR workflows, the G-SPEED Shuttle XL 24TB 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array from G-Technology provides up to 24TB of enterprise-class storage that is made up of six 4TB 7200 rpm 3.5" hard drives and is equipped with two 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 ports. While one of the Thunderbolt 3 ports is used to interface with your host system at speeds of up to 1500 MB/s, the other can be used to daisy chain up to five additional devices to your G-SPEED.

In addition to the six 3.5" drive bays, this array also has two Evolution (ev) Series drive bays that support ev Series drive modules. If there is data that needs to be copied off the array's 3.5" drives, it can be copied to the ev Series modules, which may then be removed from the array and transported or mailed with more ease than a 3.5" drive. ev Series modules can also be used to adapt memory cards, such as the RED MINI-MAG, so that content may be transferred to and from the array.

The six drive bays of the G-SPEED come pre-configured as hardware-controlled RAID 5, which provides a good balance of performance and data redundancy. Also supported is RAID 0, 1, 6, and 10. Please bear in mind that the ev Series drive bays may only be configured as RAID 0, 1, and JBOD.

The G-SPEED Shuttle XL 24TB 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array comes formatted for macOS 10.12+. After a simple reformat, it may also be used with Windows 10 and 7. Also included is a 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 cable, a power cord, and six removable disk modules, and two ev Series bay adapters. Protection is provided by a limited 5-year warranty.

    G-Technology Shuttle XL reviews

G-SPEED Shuttle XL 24TB 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array with Two ev Bay Adapters (6 x 4TB) is rated 2.8 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from great all around This raid is great. I had bad luck with a g-speed Studio arriving DOA so I was wary since it was my first G-Technology item. But after much research decided to try again with the Shuttle XL. I love the form factor, more compact than I imagined from the pictures. It was a bit louder on the desktopthan a 5 disk Synology, but not intolerable. And I can fit it in a lower compartment in large desk which minimized it perfectly. The EV slots are working great for Atomos and backups and travel disks and getting a system down with Chronosync. My iMac is still Thunderbolt 2 so had to use the Apple T3 to T2 converter and works perfectly. Right now getting 1170 MBs Write and 833 MBs Read and can look forward to bettering that with the next computer with T3. The documentation is light. Be sure to install the driver before connecting since it powers immediately when you connect the thunderbolt cable. I considered a smaller form factor Pegasus which looks good but glad I went with this, more room to grow, more docking and ready for travel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from #productioncrush Let's face it, G-Technology ROCKS. And this array is an excellent production tool for anyone who needs solid throughput, great reliability and an easy path to upgrading. I have used G-Technology for years, they are a strong company with great products and wonderful support. There's just no holes in their armor. I would highly recommend this product OR ANY of their products. I could go on and on, but I think (hope) you get my drift.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Arrived. Won't turn on. What more can I say. I'll update this review as soon as I get a replacement. Was really looking forward to getting this. After paying import duties (in Australia) it arrived the day after my pelican case for it. I downloaded the driver, installed that. Connected the thunderbolt 3 and power cable. Tried to turn it on (many times). Different wall sockets, different power cables. Won't turn on. I'll call G-technology support in the morning tomorrow and will email BH shortly. Disappointing. Hopefully when I get one that works it is good.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Buyer Beware This drive is spotty at best. When I first purchases the drive I had to call support to get it working. Now about a month later the drive has stopped working and all the G-speed support technicians can do is tell me to change the cable, because they cannot diagnose the problem. This drive is supposed to be rugged, is stopped working in my office plugged into a battery back-up. I can't imagine using this in the field. I am now stuck with an expensive oversized paper weight that I have to try and recover media from.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very slow on PC Working on a thunderbolt 3 Gigabyte x99 based computer. Configured RAID in NTFS raid 5. When I got to offload a redminimag to the shuttle I'll get a speed of approximately 400MB/s and after maybe 10 seconds it'll drop to around 115 MB/s everytime. Hooked up to a Dell Alienware R4 laptop with thunderbolt 3. Same problem there. Also getting slow transfer speeds even from a samsung t5 solid state ssd. averaging 165 MB/s. I tried transferring direct to the internal SSD on the Alienware laptop and got 900 MB/s for all of 3 seconds, then it dropped to about 340 MB/s which is the best sustained speed I've had. Other than the slow speed it's all functioned reliably for 6 months. Just WAY slower than advertised. I'm assuming this is G-tech not being properly optimised for PC? Really disappointing but will be in touch with their support to see if there's a fix. I bought this for the speed to edit 5k/6k red files. It's definitely the bottleneck in our system at the moment. I hope they do a firmware update or that G-tech can help me fix,
