Really Right Stuff BA9 BASE PLATE overview

  • 1Description

The Base Plate for Sony Alpha a9 and a7R III from Really Right Stuff is designed with anti-twist flanges to keep the mounted camera from twisting. Once the dovetail plate is on, quick release functionality has been added to the camera. Also, this base plate is compatible with all Really Right Stuff clamps and most other Arca-type heads.

The CNC machined 6061-T6 aluminum plate maintains complete access to the battery door without obstructing the tilting LCD monitor of the camera, and an option for an L-component is available that will fit the plate's modular design and make a custom-fit L-plate.

This plate has been Type II black anodized, which makes it resistant to scuffs and scratches. Furthermore, the base plate has a laser-engraved center mark on the back to align it on a head.

Really Right Stuff BA9 BASE PLATE reviews

Base Plate for Sony Alpha a9 and a7R III is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get a Grip - a7RIII Required Acessory I love the Sony a series small form factor. Sony considers the compact size a top priority because they managed to cram a lot more function into the a7RIII with only an ever so slightly larger that a7RII body. That said if you want to mount any lens larger than the small primes you will need a bigger grip. The RRS plate mates perfectly and provides a solid tripod mount, provides protection for the bottom of the camera and enables me to shoot one handed (if necessary) even with the chunky 24-105mm. I had one on my a7RII as well and for me, the RRS plate is a required accessory.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is an A+++ plate I love this plate the moment I install it on my Sony A7RIII. It fit like a glove, and add a bit of depth to the grip which fits my hand perfectly. Great attention to details. Love it... There are a couple of buyers giving this a negative review, simply because they did not know how to install it and did not read the instruction. These buyers said the battery door cannot open and need to remove the plate to remove the battery. This is a mistake that is the buyers. 1) You need to remove the battery door from the camera. 2) You then install the battery door on the plate with the two little holes, it fit perfectly. 3) Then you install the plate... Now You can install and remove the battery with ease.. This is an awesome design and I love it...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from This is the first RRS plate that made me disappointed I've been using RRS plates for many years for my Nikon, Canon, Fuji and Pentax cameras. Recently I bought a Sony A7r III. Without hesitation, I ordered this plate even there are other cheaper alternatives available. I got it today and I am a little bit disappointed. After installed it to the camera, I could not open the battery door! I tried to shift the plate a bit and it did not work. I have to take it out to be able to remove the battery. I am going to Banff national park in Canada next week and I can't imagine that I have to remove the plate first and then change the battery. I guess it might be a time to consider other alternatives.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from For those who complained about blocked battery door... Please refer to the installation manual. The battery door is supposed to be removed from the body and then attached to the base plate. IMO this is a brilliant solution.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Addition to A7RIII As is with other RRS products, the quality is excellent and looks great. Unlike other models, you need to take the battery compartment lid off of the camera body and onto the plate. It fits perfectly and not only does it give easy and secure attachment to Arca Swiss type quick release mounts, it also gives the bottom of the camera protection from banging around and shallow pooled water. And the added thickness makes holding the camera a little more comfortable when using one of the longer lenses. I hardly ever use my camera in portrait orientation on a tripod, so the additional "L" portion is unnecessary for me, and it is much less in cost than the whole "L" bracket setup. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from read the instruction before reviewing I'm still waiting for my bracket but I've been to RRS's web site and it is very clear one much remove the battery cover and attach it to the bracket. Their site makes it look very simple. You can also see on their site that there is a weather gasket built into the bracket. I bought a $27 A9 bracket on ebay, from China and it is junk, the vertical bracket sits far forward on the body and blocks the port panel. If you look at the RRS site and the photos of the bracket you will see/realize they put some serious engineering into this bracket; hence the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from a good alternative hand grip besides SONY's I have both this base plate and the SONY's vertical grip with battery holder. Not quite fair to compare these two items but I believe a lot of SONY owner are getting this for the same reason. A little extra hand grip space for the "tiny" small body to ensure stability. In terms of this, I prefer the SONY's but the RRS plate takes much less space which is my light travel favorite choice. If RRS can improve this base plate a little taller with pinky rest curve, this will be a perfect base plate. Even before this "improvement", I still love this base plate fir its improvement in hand gripping function and as a Arca-swiss plate, built quality is excellent, the touch is solid and smooth as usual.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect fit with a bonuses! RRS camera and lens plates are perfectly machined and the plate for the A7RIII is no exception. What I didn't realize is how the addition of the plate makes the body a perfect fit for my hand; no longer does my pinky finger wrap under the body. Now, the A7RIII feels even better to grip. Having the hex tool inserted into the plate for quick tightenings of not only the camera plate, but also lens plates is sheer genius!
