Upgraded with Thunderbolt 3 and an Intel 7th-Gen Kaby Lake processor, the TVS-1282T3 12-Bay NAS Enclosure from QNAP is a Thunderbolt 3/NAS/iSCSI SAN triple solution that can handle collaboration between up to four Mac and Windows devices. As its increased bandwidth allows for smooth 4K video transfers and online editing, the TVS-1282T3 is well-suited for Thunderbolt 3 systems that are engaging in 4K workflows, file storage, and high-speed sharing. The TVS-1282T3 is powered by a 3.6 GHz Intel Core i7-7700 Quad-Core processor and 64GB of 2133 MHz DDR4 RAM. Network connectivity is achieved using the four Gigabit Ethernet ports and two 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports, the latter of which helps to further enhance on-the-fly video editing and rapid file sharing. This NAS also supports JBOD and a variety of RAID modes, including RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60, and hot spare, each of which offer data redundancy, speed, or a combination of both.

This 12-bay enclosure has the ability to natively house both 3.5" and 2.5" SATA III and SATA II hard drives or SSD drives. There are eight drive bays that can accept both 3.5" and 2.5" drives, and there are also four dedicated 2.5" drive bays. The TVS-1282T3 can reach a throughput of up to 1600 MB/s, and using the external four 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 ports, five 5 Gb/s USB 3.0 Type-A ports, and three HDMI ports, this QNAP NAS can be connected to other QNAP devices, as well as other external drives and displays. Internally, there are two M.2 slots for tiered storage and cache acceleration using separately sold M.2 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110 flash modules. Additionally, the TVS-1282T3 is validated with FIPS 140-2 AES 256-bit encryption, helping to prevent sensitive business data from unauthorized access and breaches.

Using QNAP's tiered storage functionality, storage efficiency is optimized across M.2 SSDs, SATA SSDs, and SATA HDDs. Frequently-used "hot" data is stored on high-performance SSD tiers, while less-accessed "cold" data is kept on higher-capacity hard drives.     VJBOD: Achieve Optimal Capacity Utilization Across Multiple QNAP NAS

    Are the TB3 hubs on the i7 64ram just as quick as a DAS with TB3, e.g. a laCie 6 big?

    The speed of the Thunderbolt ports will be the same on either device, up to 40Gbps. In the end, the drive speed, host computer and which RAID mode is being used will determine the read and write speeds you will get on the device. If you need more than 1 user connected to the device, the QNAP TVS-1282T3 would allow you to do this while the Lacie 6Big DAS would limit you to one user with no NAS capabilities.

    Are each of the four TB3 ports on this NAS just as quick than if you used a DAS with TB3?

    This is a question with a complex answer.... The ports are TB3 and while they should run at 40G, they may not see that throughput because of disk specs, RAID setup, and nature of the I/O work you're doing. Interestingly, though, that may not actually matter because the throughput of the drive array matters quite a lot. For example, a box full of 5400 rpm drives doing random read/write is not going to benchmark well. A box full of SSDs doing the same will be blazing fast. I'm running a LaCie portable with TB3 alongside the 1282T3 and I don't see much difference. Practically speaking, it's blazingly fast and there is essentially nothing that provides this much storage capacity (and the possibility of auto-tiering where ultra-high-speed SSD can be used for random reads). My decision was more about is there a true DAS that can store 130TB of data? (no). My use is as music and video server, so I went RAID 6 main array (8x12 + 8x12 expansion) and RAID 1 SSDs. This allows uber-fast random read/write from SSD for database hits and excellent sequential read/write on the main array containing the media. (QNAP does this for you, automatically - there's essentially nothing to configure).Bottom line: the box is very very fast, but it's up to you to decide what your user case looks like in order to get best performance - because your decisions will determine the results (and overall cost) much more than the ports.

    Can you install an additional 2 port 10gigabit card to the system.?

    Yes, look up on the website where the spec has an additional PCIe slot that you could use for their 10G network card or a video card. Also, the two dual-port TB3 card can also be removed to make room for other cards.For example, I do not have that many computers with TB3 ports, so I remove one dual-port TB3 card from the TVS-1282T3 (i.e. it will have two TB3 ports instead of four), and install a QNAP dual-port 10G network card, and a QNAP SAS card (to connect to RXP-1000 PRO SAS enclosure)
