does this cancel out background noise?
Microphones typically do not cancel out sound. The microphone cannot determine or distinguish noise from the desired audio. The cardioid pattern of this mic is designed for close use and will generally pick-up sound mainly from the front. Sound that is reflected off walls, ceilings, and floors may still be picked-up. Some unwanted noise or sounds can often be edited out of the final mix as well using DAW software on your computer.
