Radial Engineering R800 7017 overview

  • 1Description

The Tonebone North-Star from Radial Engineering was designed for guitar players who straddle the boundaries of rock and country, but it’s suitable for any guitar player looking for a versatile distortion pedal with a Class-A booster and built-in effects loop. Indeed, the pedal can help you achieve a wide array of distortion-based timbres, from a subtle heft to singing lead tone.

The clean boost section provides up to 24 dB of gain, and is accessible from its own dedicated footswitch. The clean boost section also engages the on-board effects loop, which allows you to route in external pedals into the circuit, if that your desire.

The distortion section is its own circuit, engaged with its own footswitch, and supplied with its own controls. For instance, you can change the overall tone of the signal with a single knob, and use a three-position toggle switch to adjust the high-end frequency content of the signal. This helps you better address the sonic particularities of any given amplifier, as one might sound too dark on its own, while another might sound too bright. The switch will help you compensate.

The overdrive circuit feeds the boost, so you can use the boost to increase level for solos and lead breaks. With a 14-gauge steel construction and powder-coated finish, the pedal is rugged enough to withstand the rigors of the road lifestyle. You can power the North-Star from any compatible pedalboard, or by using a power supply (available separately).

Controls at a Glance
BOOST knob: Controls the variable class-A power booster, giving you up to 24 dB of clean gain

LEVEL knob: Sets the output volume level for the overdrive section

TONE knob: Brightens or darkens the overdrive circuit to better suit your needs

DRIVE knob: Addresses high-end frequencies, and can be used to compensate for the top end of overly bright amps, or to bolster trebles when playing through dark-sounding amps

RANGE toggle switch: Boosts or cuts high frequencies, and is useful in matching

BOOST footswitch: Activates the clean booster, and switches on the effects loop

DRIVE footswitch: Engages the overdrive circuit
