Vello BG-S5 Overview

  • 1Description

The Vello BG-S5 Battery Grip is designed specifically for the Sony Alpha a6500 camera. The grip holds one or two NP-FW50 batteries which effectively doubles your shooting time when both batteries are installed. It works through the use of a dedicated battery adapter and the design of the grip provides a comfortable way to hold and shoot your camera in the vertical position. The BG-S5 also has a vertical-position shutter-release button for portrait orientation shooting which works through the use of an included Multi-Terminal cable. It even has an on/off switch that can turn off both the grip and camera for simplified operation.

The BG-S5 is designed with an anti-slip rubber grip to further improve handling. The battery grip screws into the camera's tripod mount, and it has another tripod mount on its bottom for attaching to a camera support. A metal mount allows you to attach a camera strap to the BG-S5 for convenient carrying.

Designed to match the body design of the a6500 for improved ergonomics and control.
Holds up to two NP-FW50 batteries, doubling the battery life for the Sony a6500.
Provides comfortable and secure handling when shooting in the vertical position, including a secondary shutter release button.
Features anti-slip rubber gripping and a securely locking battery chamber door.

    Vello BG-S5 Reviews

BG-S5 Battery Grip for Sony Alpha a6500 is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better Than Nothing :-) Easy to configure. Good feel. Seems to be solidly built. My one question on concern involves the (shockingly) short battery life. I don't think I'm getting the performance of two batteries via the use of this battery grip. I shot yesterday and wore out the "batteries" after about 175 shots, which is well below what I expected out of one battery. At any rate, it's better than nothing and provides the same feel that I am accustomed via my other camera and battery grips, so I'm somewhat satisfied. Something's amiss though.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Buy This was a very useful purchase, Seeing that the battery life of the Sony a6500 doesn't have a very long lifespan. Now it is doubled. The quality of the grip is fantastic as well; grips well. Only thing I can see being troublesome is the wire that has to connect externally from the grip to the camera. Either than that I love it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works fine More helpful for vertical shots.  It holds both batteries, replacing the battery in the camera with the electronic connection.  The SD card remains in the camera, so the Grip must be removed to change the SD cards.  Not sure why they didnt extend the SD slot up into the grip - signal loss?  Well made. Its ironic, all Sony had to do was add 3/8 to the camera length so a twice as large battery could be used.  Not sure of the logic of tiny body size when substantial lenses will be used.  Adding this, a strobe and a Sony 18-200 lens makes for a heavy compact system.  Heck, was never going to fit in a pants pocket anyway :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from lightweight and grippy it is very lightweight, grippy, and works perfectly fine. the only thing that bothers me is the cable you have to use, they should include an extra one since you can easily lose it or damage it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Feels good and works fine I have a similar battery pod on my D60 with a leather fist grip. It is my walking around configuration. The combination with the A56500 works even better. The balance with the 18-100 on the camera is lighter in all respects. From comments about battery life on the 6500 it seems the two battery solution is a must.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Grip for the A6500 The Vello BG-S5 Battery Grip is just what I was looking to make my A6500 work great with my longer telephoto lenses. The balance is much better and the grip is much more comfortable to hold. So far I have not noticed any battery power leakage. I would recommend it highly if you need more grip and battery power.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Battery Grip Fits good.  Fells good. Works good. Wish I did not have to use cable for shutter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great buy! When Im in tourist mode, I love the compact and powerful features of the a6500.  But when I need to take photos at an event, I attach this awesome battery grip.  This grip gives me extended battery life, much easier portrait shooting, and a much larger gripping area that balances out the flash bracket and flash unit.  With this grip, it is like having two cameras in one!  I resisted buying this for a long time, now I am kicking myself for waiting so long!!

is this compatible with the Sony A6400?
    Asked by: Emilio
We're afraid not. This battery grip is not compatible with the A6400. At this time the best option to use multiple batteries with the A6400 is the Sony NPA-MQZ1K Multi Battery Adapter Kit, B&H # SONPAMQZ1K. https://bhpho.to/2rhHbyn

    question

When I have two batteries in the grip the LCD shows both a 1 and a 2 for batteries. But only the 1 is lighted showing the percent of charge on that battery. How do I select 2 to see the charge on that second battery?
    Asked by: Joseph
This is a 3rd party solution so complete integration with the camera is not possible. If you wish to read the battery strength of the 2nd battery, please swap 1 and 2. This is not ideal but it is a usable workaround.

Does it work with the Sony a6400?
    Asked by: Felix
Apparently, the grip of the BG-5 battery does not work on the A6400, only on the Sony A6500. What's more, from what I've seen there would be no battery grip for the A6400. Not so for the A6300, which works with BGS4, B & H # VEBGS4 or B & H # VEBGS4AK I hope not to be wrong BR Renzo

    question

is this compatible with the Sony A6000?
    Asked by: Kelo S.
I do not think so. The overall dimensions of the 6500 are larger than the 6000, so I think that the grip end will not line up with the barrel connection that gets plugged in for the camera side.

    question

From the picture it looks like the cable has to loop upside down to the connection on the camera. Is the cable actually not shorter and able to do a straight connection to the camera terminal??
    Asked by: chris
Yes, the connector to the camera is angled up instead of down so it has to loop the other way to connect to the grip but it is long enough and doesn't interfere with the HDMI connector on the camera.
