SAFETY FIRST: Observing the Sun without the proper protection may result in serious personal injury, including permanent eye damage and blindness, and/or damage to equipment. Never point an optic at the sun without an approved solar filter on the front of the optic. For direct solar viewing, viewing the sun through an optic, or when using cameras with an optical viewfinder, ensure your filter is ISO 12312-2 (also written as ISO 12312-2:2015) certified. Never use photographic neutral density filters for direct solar viewing, viewing the sun through an optic, or when using cameras with an optical viewfinder.

The Formatt Hitech 77mm Firecrest Neutral Density 5.4 Solar Eclipse Filter produces images with a neutral color tone and no color-cast or loss of sharpness. Its 18-stop exposure reduction, built-in infrared cut, and 5.4 density blocks radiation outside the visual spectrum that imaging sensors are able to detect, which can cause interference with capturing clear images, and creates a darkening of the entire image that makes it effective for solar and solar eclipse photography. With this filter, users can capture photographs with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. This is strictly a photographic filter and is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye.

Warning; under no circumstances should these filters be used to view a solar eclipse with the naked eye. These products are strictly for on-camera use. These filters do not offer the same level of optical protection as solar eclipse viewing glasses and using these to look directly at the sun before, during or after a solar eclipse could permanently damage your eyesight.

Formatt-Hitech will not be held liable for any costs, associated expenses or medical claims relating to damage to your eyesight as a result of improper use of these filters.

Due to the extremely long exposure times these filters make possible, the risk of light leaking in through the camera body and manifesting in your shot is high. We recommend that you take steps to mask the eyepieces/viewfinders and and ports to prevent this from happening. Many photographers use a low adhesive black tape for this purpose however it is your responsibility to ensure that anything you affix to your camera will not cause damage to the camera body or functionality. Another option is wrapping the camera in a thick black cloth although you should leave some areas of the body exposed to dissipate heat.

Even with the extreme density of these filters, we recommend you contact your camera manufacturer to assess the suitability of your camera for shooting directly into the sun. Formatt-Hitech will not be held liable for any damage caused by continued exposure of your camera sensor to direct sunlight with or without our filters in place.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solar filter for photographing the sun This is a really dark filter designed for the purpose of solar photography. It does the job but takes a little practice to actually find the sun the first time you use it since it the filter is so black. It is best to use the LED screen on your camera and avoid looking at the sun by use of the optical view finder.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It does the job! I've tested this filter to see how well it will work for the solar eclipse in August, and it looks like it will do the job intended. I can't vouch for the safety of the filter as far as IR or UV rays, but it blocks the white light of the sun far more than I expected. The image I'm uploading was shot at 1/500, f/5.6, and ISO 800 about two hours before sunset.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Seems to work as advertised after using with full sun Purchased for the eclipse, but I've tested it on the full sun, and it works as advertised. If anything, it's a bit too dark, but I suppose that this is necessary. It's so dark, it's hard to aim, and I have to use a relatively long shutter speed to get a good exposure. I was hoping for 1/5000th or something fast so I could hand hold a 400mm. Instead, I'll need a tripod and possible mirror lockup for my purposes. We'll see next month how it works out.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Broken after one try I bought this filter for the upcoming solar eclipse. On first inspection, it looked good. I decided to try to take some pictures of the sun to try to prepare. Seems to work fine. I went to use again today and I could feel the filter rattle. When I hold it up to the light, there is light coming in. It is as if the glass is slightly too small for the metal ring around it. On closer inspection, I can see that the metal ring, which sits on the front of the filter has moved slightly, allowing the glass to move. It is obviously unfit for use for the eclipse. I'm not sure how it broke but I suspect it's from the foam in the case, which is very tight. I'm wondering if it bent the filter when I was putting it back in. I've never had any other brand filter do this. Either way, I'm out $$$ with less than 3 weeks to go. Not impressed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worked extremely well for the 2017 Eclipse This worked exactly as advertised for the eclipse outside of Totality. I am giving it four stars out of five because the first filter I received from them was defective. After screwing it on to a lens of appropriate size and removing the filter, the glass began to rattle in the ring. B&H eventually replaced it just before the eclipse. The filter could be improved by using brass for the ring instead of what seems to be aluminum, especially considering the price. The brass feels nicer and is much easier to remove and less likely to bind.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well worth the money! I purchased this for the upcoming solar eclipse and have practiced test run. It does a great job and is producing sharp images of the sun. It is a white filter but you can produce some amber hues in post editing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This filter is just what I needed!!!! I bought this filter for the recent solar eclipse viewing. Per an on-line chat with a B&H representative, this was the suggested filter to use. I was a bit concerned that it would not arrive in time for me to get it as I was leaving in a couple days to head to Texas and then on to Jackson Hole Wyoming. And the filter was on back order. I had it sent to the address in Texas where I was going to be. B&H was right on with their date of expected receipt. They got it to me at the Texas address before I left there. The filter fit perfectly on my Canon 100-400 lens and allowed me to capture some very good pictures of the moon and sun during the partial phases of the eclipse. Thanks to the chat representative and B&H, I now have a filter for the next full eclipse in a couple years down in Argentina!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I am ready! This is my first ND filter and I'm very thrilled to be taking it with me up to Oregon for the eclipse. Really easy to use and the sample below isn't even a very good shot, I know I can get much better sharpness by using MUP and LiveView. My first attempt was focusing by eye and a quick shot on tripod and remote shutter release. I know I what to do and I can get the most out of my settings, my next shot is going to be better thanks this finely made, high quality filter.
