ikan Onyx 120 Overview

The Onyx 120 Bi-Color On-Camera LED Light from ikan has an output of roughly 100W at full power, yet draws only 15W. It is a bi-color light that enables you to adjust the color temperature of the fixture's output from 3200 to 5600K and features a CRI of 95 and TLCI of 96 in both Tungsten and Daylight. Power on/off, dimming, and color temperature are controlled from the back of the fixture via four buttons. A two-digit LED screen is shared for dimming and color temp, with an indicator light informing you of which characteristic you are controlling.

The fixture powers from an L-series battery, and ships with the equivalent of a 550 L-series battery. You can also power the fixture from an optional AC power supply that outputs 13 to 17 VDC. The built-in diffusion helps prevent the effect of multiple cast shadows that afflict some LED array-type lights. A built-in 1/4"-20 threaded mounting hole, and the included cold shoe adapter enable mounting the fixture on your camera.

Control
On the back of the fixture are four buttons:
  • Power on/off
  • Plus
  • Minus
  • M - select

  • The M button enables switching between dimming and color temperature. An LED indicator lights up to indicate which characteristic of the fixture you are controlling. A two digit display screen indicates dimming from 10 to 99% and color temperature from 32 to 56.

Good but weak on accessories, eats battery like crazy, etc

Good: 1. Can get pretty darn bright, like it's already pretty bright even at 30-40....HOWEVER, there's a con below. I am fairly satisfy in terms of the dimming capabilities and well it illuminates an area. 2. Being able to change color temperature is pretty neat. 3. Love the camera shoe accessory to mount onto the camera CONS: 1. Eats battery way too fast and that's only at 40% of max 99. I'm talking about 20-30 minutes. And it takes about 2+ hours to charge. I don't know how people handle charging all these darn batteries! 2. If it isn't sucking the battery dry, it's overheating, like it just turns off even with 25% left. I turn it off manually, pull the battery out, reinsert and it says 25% left. Once I get an AC adapter for this, I'll def have to test out the overheating a bit more. Again, this is using it at about 40%, not even close to 99% full power. 3. Because of the above, this SHOULD come with a AC adapter because it just goes through a battery so fast and shoots take awhile, even hours and no way in heck is this staying on a battery for that long. 4. The included 2900 mAh battery just doesn't have enough juice and is insufficient, it's like they're purposely doing it because they want you to buy more batteries. 5. Would like battery percentage to show more accurately. Says 99%, I use for a few mins and look, 75%. It's in 25% increments. 6. IMO, should come with a mini desktop stand too. 7. The charger keeps breaking up into two separate pieces when I try to pull the battery out, I don't fully understand the purpose of this but it seems kinda annoying. 8. While it is nice, I honestly am not confident in the build quality and the longevity of the product. But time will tell. I didn't include that into my score but we'll see. I can't see myself highly recommending this for long term working without having to worry about turning it off to let it cool down etc.

    question

Hola, soy de Chile.El cargador de batera es compatible con el voltaje de 220 Volt? Gracias.
    Asked by: alan
I bought the light on the basis of the answer to this query (I'm in Australia). The two-pronged charger that came with the unit DOES NOT fit Australian power outlets (it appears to be a standard USA plug). It doesn't come with the usual power lead - instead, the prongs swing out from the small charging unit. It also doesn't come with any of the usual international adaptors. In other words, I can't use the light unless I spend more to source a charger that CAN be used in Australia. Very annoyed.

When I plug in the battery charger, it shows a red light. After several hours this light is still red. Does the charger light change to green when fully charged? How long should this take?
    Asked by: Keith
The batteries need to be charged on a separate charger for this light. It uses L-series batteries, which require a specific charger and depending upon the size of the battery, charge times can vary anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the model and brand of charger-- some even longer.

    Asked by: Mustafa
Mine included the charger and the IKan label Sony style battery NP-F550/570 7.4volt 2900mAh. This battery lasts at least 6 hrs (have yet to deplete the battery) of which I normally have set to about 60% illumination.

I must sometimes, work in the rain. Does this light hold up to getting wet?
    Asked by: Brian
We do not recommend exposing this light to rain. A simple suggestion is to cover this light with a clear "zip-loc" style bag (sandwich size) when it must be exposed to the elements.

What's the size of the external power jack?
    Asked by: Darwin
Not sure how to answer the question. It comes with an AC power block, and you can connect a battery. Ah, but a closer look at the device reveals, etched, in, DC 15V. So that should be your answer.
