ikan Onyx 240 Overview

The Onyx 240 Bi-Color On-Camera LED Light from ikan has an output of roughly 250W at full power, yet draws only 30W. It is a bi-color light that enables you to adjust the color temperature of the fixture's output from 3200 to 5600K and features a CRI of 95 and TLCI of 96 in both Tungsten and Daylight. Power on/off, dimming, and color temperature are controlled from the back of the fixture via four buttons. A two-digit LED screen is shared for dimming and color temp, with an indicator light informing you of which characteristic you are controlling.

The fixture requires two L-series batteries, and ships with two batteries that are the equivalent of a 550 L-series battery and a dual battery charger. You can also power the fixture from an optional AC power supply that outputs 13 to 17 VDC. The built-in diffusion helps prevent the effect of multiple cast shadows that afflict some LED array-type lights. A built-in 1/4"-20 threaded mounting hole, and the included cold shoe adapter enable mounting the fixture on your camera. Also included are a removable handle and removable light stand adapter, which mount via the 1/4"-20 threaded mounting hole.

Control
On the back of the fixture are four buttons:
  • Power on/off
  • Plus
  • Minus
  • M - select

  • The M button enables switching between dimming and color temperature. An LED indicator lights up to indicate which characteristic of the fixture you are controlling. A two digit display screen indicates dimming from 10 to 99% and color temperature from 32 to 56.
The fixture has two slots for L-Series type batteries, as well as a coaxial port for power from an optional AC adapter. When powering from batteries, you must use two batteries to power the fixture, it does not work with only one battery.

Great video light for weddings. Very happy with temperature control & intensity

Really nice camera light! (works with D-tap cable)

Note: This light works with a D-tap cable off the Anton Bauer plate.  Really nice camera light especially if you have to light two people. High CRI. Quality build.  Lasted for 2 hours at full power on a fully charged 240wh battery (brick), the camera turned on and the battery only drained 30%.

at first, i thought this unit was wonderful. But, i have since gone through 4 batteries and 2 chargers and still they are not working correctly. The charging unit flashes sometimes, not at all, works correctly, then doesnt. The light comes with no charging instructions. I am awaiting my 3rd set of batteries and charger unit! I am sick of this!

    Ideal LED light - almost

This light has been extra handy and regularly is just right for a little portable face light or a front fill below my camera lens. The 32K and 56K color temps are both true enough, and they also blend nicely for in-between color temps. No, it's not super punchy, but it's not intended to be and is still reasonably bright enough most of the time. Mine has one strange quirk, however - whenever it's connected to AC power [using the official iKan AC power plug] and the dimmer is run all the way up to 99 [full power level], it shuts off and gives me a Lo message on the display screen. Huh?? It doesn't do it when connected to battery power. There's no info about this display message in the Onyx 240 info or instructions, but it's clearly designed into the light for some reason because Lo appears on the screen. Again, huh?? My workaround is to just never raise the dimmer past 98. Yes it's awkward, but the light always works that way and it's likely much less trouble than trying to send it into iKan probably is.

Good compact light and easy to use and set up. Only downside you need to purchase a AC adapter only comes with batteries which is a little annoying for my studio set up.

I love the light. It has worked great for what I needed. The charger on the other hand does not appear to work anymore. It is supposed to light up to show the charging, but doesn't. I have a backup charger for the extra batteries that I purchased after getting the light. Unfortunately, it only charges one battery at a time. I am well past the 30 days to return this item. A great light though.

Fantastic light that can be set up in multiple configurations thanks to the 1/4" threaded insert. I've used it attached to my camera, and have used it attached to a tiny tripod. Feels solid, but light (aluminum). Nice batteries, pleasant glow, easy to change settings. Not disappointed at all.

I'm hesitant only because there's no option to use a power supply. Anyone find this is a problem or is performance good enough via batteries only?
    Asked by: Justin
Your info is incorrect. You can buy a power supply, or use batteries. Sony L series work, get larger ones as the ikan batteries dont last long. I have one onyx and might get two more as they are great for run and gun, travel shoots, as its easy to pack in my camera backpack.

The Ikan Onyx 240 Bi-Color On-Camera LED Light, comes packaged with a Sony-style L-series battery, dual charger. If you need an additional one, the Watson Duo LCD Charger for L & M Series Rechargeable Batteries is a good choice. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1566989-REG/watson_dx_4203_duo_lcd_charger_for.html

    question

Is there any kind of diffuser that this light comes with or is available for it?
    Asked by: Bill
This light does not include diffusion, nor are we aware of a specific diffusion product for it. However it is a dimmable light, you will be able to control the amount of light it is outputting with the dimmer.
