Rokinon 16mm T2.6 Full Frame Cine DS Overview

Designed to overcome the challenges in assembling a set of lenses over time, the Rokinon 16mm T2.6 Full-Frame Cine DS Lens for Sony E Mount features a multilayer coating process for consistently-rendered color from lens to lens. The industry standard geared focus and iris rings share a common position with other Cine DS lenses, eliminating the time it would take to reposition a matte box, follow focus, or other accessory when switching lenses. When used with a full-frame sensor camera, this 16mm lens produces a 106.9°, super-wide angle of view.

The Cine DS primes' hybrid aspherical elements render sharply-defined images with a minimum of distortion and chromatic aberrations, and the minimum focus distance is 11.8" from the lens. For ease of use when working with an assistant, the Cine DS primes feature focus and T-stop scales on both sides of the lens barrel. An integrated petal-type lens hood reduces flare without the use of a matte box.

Rokinon 16mm T2.6 Full Frame Cine DS Lens (Nikon F Mount) is a great lens, nice flat field and clear image. Since Nikon is discontinuing so many lenses, we had to try this one and are happy to look at more Rokinon lenses as Nikon seems to be on it's heels with F-mount lenses, which we will need for years to come.

Hi - I am tardy with some lens tests, but today my wall and scenic tests with this lens were most satisfactory. I originally chose the 16mm t2.6 not for cinema, but because it seemed to be rectlinear. And it is! The lens has the expected vignetting but is good wide open and well resolved at t4. The sharpness is a revelation. Great lens.

My two new cinema lenses are for Sony full frame. Actually I first chose this for the particular focal length and rectilinear properties. Then I decided to try video making. Why not? * I've had good luck with Rok/Sam products. Not tested yet (where is summer?). These are solid, substantial lenses. Gotta love 'em, and the examples I've tested have not been de-centred. -

I use the Rokinon 16mm T2.6 lens on my Panasonic EVA-1 and it creates beautiful images. Has a great wide field of view for the camera. Definitely the best bang for your buck on a budget.

There are two 16mm Rokinon cine lenses - this one which is slower, cannot take screw on filters, and covers full frame sensors, and the other lens with is faster, takes screw on filters, and will not cover full frame sensors. Both 16mm lenses are faster than the Rokinon 14mm, making either a good choice if you need both wide and fast glass. This lens has a built in hood, good feeling focus wheel, and takes good images. I’ve found it to be plenty sharp fully open and consistent across the frame, though I doubt this lens would come close to a famously sharp lens like a Sigma. If you don’t care about the sensor coverage, I would go with the faster and filter-compatible of the two - bit of you do need full frame coverage and want something fast and good looking, this is a solid and very reasonably priced cine lens.

question

Can you use threaded filters with Rokinon 16mm T2.6?
Asked by: Gregory
We are afraid not. The Rokinon 16mm Cine DS Lens does not have a filter thread on it. You may want to consider using a Matte Box system for filters with lenses like this. This lens has a 81.6 mm diameter, you could use the Wooden Camera 2-Stage Clamp-On 4 x 5.65 Zip Box which clamps to lenses between 80-85mm, B&H # WO241600.https://bhpho.to/2Aosn5R

Dose this one work on the bmpcc 4K?
Asked by: Anonymous
No, because this lens has a Canon EF mount while the camera has Micro Four-Thirds mount. We recommend either using a MFT to Canon EF adapter or purchasing the same lens but with a MFT mount. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1339240-REG/rokinon_ffds16_mft_cine_ds_ff_16mm.html

There is almost nothing on the internet about this lens. Id really love to use this lens wide open but typically Rokinon Cine lenses need a stop down to get sharp. Anyone know any really good comparisons with this lens at different Tstops from T2.6 down to its minimum aperture? I know its a Cine lens but would be great to see some high res photos for comparison.
Asked by: John
We are not aware of any specific locations showcasing examples of this lens at different apertures. You could however check on websites like Youtube and Vimeo to see if anyone has posted examples.

What type of matte box can be used with this lens? Do I have to use one that goes on rails? Is it possible to get a matte box that will allow me to add ND filters?
Asked by: Winston
The Rokinon 16mm T2.6 Full Frame Cine DS Lens (Canon EF Mount) (B&H# RODS16T26C) would indeed require some kind of matte box to use filters. Rail-mounted matte boxes would be an option, yes, but since you seem to want something else, you can use the lens-gripping Wooden Camera 2-Stage Clamp-On 4 x 5.65" Zip Box (80-85mm) (B&H# WO241600): https://bhpho.to/3nzlepM
