DJI Spark overview

  • 1Description

Though agile in the air, drones can be bulky and cumbersome when on land. Not so with the sky blue Spark from DJI, which won't hold you back no matter what the adventure. This compact quadcopter features an integrated camera with motorized stabilization to capture 12MP photos, 1080p Full HD videos, and even aerial selfies. The drone's compact size, 31 mph top speed, and up to 16 minutes of flight time will appeal to a variety of users, from FPV enthusiasts to racers to those just looking for more dynamic shots than are possible with simply a smartphone or camcorder. The drone features GPS- and vision-based navigation for outdoor or indoor use, a variety of flight modes, and a 3D obstacle-detection system.

Integrated Camera and Gimbal

A 2-axis gimbal-stabilized camera backed by a 1.2/3" CMOS sensor allows you to capture up to 12MP still photos and record 1080p/30 Full HD video.
2-Axis Gimbal
Spark's 2-axis mechanical gimbal and UltraSmooth technology dramatically reduce shake and rolling shutter effect, keeping shots stable without loss of detail.
High-Grade Optics
Spark's camera features an f/2.6 aperture wide-angle lens with a 25mm-equivalent focal length for a wide angle of view. Five elements are arranged into a single group that fit into a compressed frame.
Pano Mode
Spark shoots horizontal or vertical panoramas by automatically adjusting its gimbal and heading.
Shallow Focus
3D vision technology helps capture photos with a shallow depth of field.
Photo Modes
  • Single Shot
  • 3-Frame Burst Shooting
  • Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB)
  • Intervals from 2 to 60 Seconds
720p Video Downlink
Wi-Fi enables connecting to a mobile device as far away as 328.1', and at a maximum height of 164'. Both 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz signals are supported for better reliability where the spectrum is congested. In addition to app-based functions, you can view a live video feed at up to 720p resolution.

Flight Control System

Navigation System
The Spark can position itself accurately in a range of environments, beyond what is possible using basic "optical flow" technology, which depends on a single downward-facing camera and assumes that the ground below is always flat. Spark can sense its environment in three dimensions and react to it, ensuring it hovers steadily, whether it is high up on the side of a cliff where downward sensors have no target, or under a forest canopy where satellite positioning is blocked and the ground is covered in uneven markings and obstacles.
Quick Launch
With FaceAware, Spark lifts off from your hand by recognizing your face. It takes off and hovers in place within seconds of powering on.
Gesture-Base Control
Tell Spark what to do without using a controller or app. Simply use hand gestures to maneuver and take photos.
  • SELFIES: Raise your arms, wave your hand, or make a frame with your fingers to maneuver Spark and shoot photos
  • PALMCONTROL: Spark can follow your hand movements or even take off and land on your palm
QuickShot Smart Video Modes
Spark helps you create professional-looking areal videos thanks to the following modes:
  • ROCKET: Ascend with the camera pointing downward
  • DRONIE: Fly backward and upward, with the camera locked on your subject
  • CIRCLE: Circle around a given target
  • HELIX: Fly upward, spiraling around your subject
ActiveTrack Subject Tracking
With ActiveTrack, just tell the Spark who to track and it handles the rest. No GPS bracelets or transmitters are required. The Spark has been trained to detect and recognize a number of common subjects including people, bike riders, vehicles, and even animals. Two settings are offered:
  • TRACE: Track your target from in front or behind, or even circle around it
  • PROFILE: Follow your subject from a fixed perspective
When you tap on your phone's screen, software translates your touch into a heading, including whether you want it to climb or descend. When you want to change direction, just tap somewhere else on your screen and the Spark will smoothly turn to the new destination. Two modes are available:
  • DIRECTION: Keep flying in the direction you tap on screen
  • COORDINATE: Tap the screen and fly to that spot while maintaining altitude
Sport Mode
Sport Mode was designed for fun, giving the Spark a top speed of 31 mph, all the while ramping up agility and responsiveness, to give you a taste of drone racing. You can also use it to film something fast, or zip out to catch a shot before the moment passes. Even in Sport Mode, the Spark will rapidly come to a stop if you let go of the controls.
Spark's FlightAutonomy System features a main camera, vision positioning system (VPS), 3D object sensing, GPS, a high-precision IMU, and a 24-core controller. Together these allow Spark to hover accurately anywhere with VPS assistance at up to 98', sense obstacles from up to 15' away, and land safely.
Return to Home
Where GPS is available, the Spark it able to return to its takeoff point and land itself. This will happen automatically if the battery gets too low, the controller signal is lost, or you press the RTH (Return to Home) button on the app or controller. Spark is able to sense and maneuver around obstacles as it returns.
Flight Protection
DJI's GEO system lets you know where drone flights may raise safety or security concerns, such as near airports or stadiums.
Dual Frequency 2.4G and 5.8G Radio
The Spark's remote controller and Wi-Fi work on both 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz range frequencies. This means the system can take advantage of the less-crowded 5.8 GHz part of the spectrum when the 2.4 GHz range is saturated.

Built for Speed
Spark features an aerodynamic profile that enables it to soar through the air with minimal wind resistance. Performance and stability are enhanced by keeping the gimbal flush with the aircraft. This enables flying in strong winds and the ability to achieve a top speed or 31 mph in Sport Mode.

FPV Flight

Using Sport Mode, FPV is enabled by default, so the camera moves with you as you fly. To enhance the immersive experience, Spark can be paired with the separately available DJI Goggles.

DJI GO Mobile App

Edit and Share
The DJI GO 4 app features automatic editing templates and an array of filters. Quickly edit videos and share them straight to social media.

Intelligent Flight Battery

Spark uses a high-energy-density LiPo flight battery for optimal performance. 12 intelligent protection functions help ensure safe flight. Additionally, Spark's battery estimates remaining flight time, letting you know when to land in real time.

DJI Spark reviews

Spark Quadcopter (Sky Blue) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 44.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great for this newbie Once I worked thru all the firmware updates...the smart batteries need updates too, the dji4 iphone controller app was surprisingly agile in controlling the drone. It's only been one I haven't tried all the intelligent modes yet. At this point I realize I will probably absolutely need the dji remote control hardware to get the distance range I need with the spark to get the videos I want. So you can save yourself some time, if not money, by buying the "fly more accessory pack" when you acquire your spark. BTW the packing case is quite rigid and sturdy so you may not need a hard case...depending on your handling...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it, but get the package... The drone itself is a great way to get into drone flying. It's small, great for travel. Hand-launching and landing is nice to avoid rough patches of ground, as this drone settles on its belly. You can buy aftermarket landing gear, but I don't recommend adding extra weight. One star off for effective battery life. Get the Fly More Package. You'll want the remote (added range, increased altitude, easier to fly with the joysticks, etc. You'll want the prop guards, and should you need it, the additional propellers. You'll want more batteries. Two is the minimum. Three, maybe even four if you want to fly for more than a half-hour. Get a cable to connect your phone to the remote to avoid wifi dropping the connection between the two. It will happen. And lastly, figure out how to fly it before you fire it up. Download the manual, watch the YouTube vids. DJI's own videos are lacking.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from DJI Spark: love and hate! I got the basic Spark, without a remote controller etc, which was a mistake: most people will need the remote, since they will want better range than your phone alone provides (about 100 feet) and the combo is cheaper and quicker to arrive. But just the basic, with your phone as controller, will get you flying and the more experience you gain, the better - there's a ton to learn. I'm still a beginner, and even though the spark is targeted to beginners, it's not beginner friendly. The biggest difficulty is that without great care you can easily lose your wifi connection to the spark, and thus the ability to fly! Worst, it's set up so that if you do lose your connection (which you almost certainly will) when you are less than 60 feet away from launch point, the drone will land wherever it happens to be: into a tree or water. luckily it's well built and may well survive such a crash.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DJI Spark Drone Quality drone. It is compact and easy to start and fly once you are familiar with the DJI Go 4 App. As always B&H Photo shipped very fast. The DJI Go 4 App can be confusing, but with the help of You Tube I was able to figure it out. The DJI videos present the Spark subject matter in a fashion which is too fast and therefore unclear. After You Tube review, the DJI Go 4 App is pretty straight forward, now that I am familiar with its menu's. Compared to other drones I have this drone finds satellites pretty fast and therefore easier to start flying it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Be aware.... It is a nice drone. But this particular one has the battery on the bottom. Mine popped out mid flight and crashed from about 20ft, ruining it. B&H does not handle the drone. Instead they send it off to a third party for evaluation (as I was told), to make sure it wasn't my fault. It's been a month since I ordered it. Finally received it, just the drone no controller, after 2 weeks. Controller took 1 month to get. Only flew it for a total of 10 mins, roughly. It's been sitting with the 3rd party for over a week, untouched by them, COMPLETELY wasting my time. Battery looks like it exploded.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice little starter drone This is a nice little drone. Very well built. Good for a beginner. If I had it to do over I would buy the fly more package to get the extra batteries and charger because battery life is the main downfall of this little drone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product. Fun to play I was new to drone. Saw a good deal for another brand but after I did some research, I decided to buy DJI Spark. Spark was not just a toy. It was a sophisticated product. I encourage everyone to go to YouTube to learn about the tips and tricks first. The 1st time I played with it I flew up really high and flew away. I was a bit panic but luckily able to brought it back, so make sure you practice. I got a good deal that the remote control was free, and you should always use the remote and also an OTG cable. Spark is very good product for beginners, given what it offers for the price, and from a well known drone company. If you are new to drone, get a Spark.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great first time drone for learning newbies! So first off, I purchased this little guy off of another site but wanted to share my input here as well as I ordered the same package! To start, I have had ZERO drone experience before this one, so if you are like me, you are a bit intimidated by ALL THE DIFFERENT types of drones out there. You have the spark, mavic, mavic pro, phantom etc. it does not stop. I wanted a drone, but did not want to spend over 500$... So BAM, this guy comes on sale so I decided to buy it after reading and watching almost every single review video (i kid you not) My cousin has a DJI phantom and that thing is huge. I knew DJI had great quality products because I saw my cousins drone and he gave me his experience of his. The spark did not disappoint for a first drone. Literally has TONS of features for the price and honestly if you are a newbie like me, this drone is a perfect fit for a first drone. It has so many features despite the minuscule size. I was honestly contemplating to purchase this little guy, or the mavic pro which was about 350$ more at the time of making this review. I want to also be clear if you have not heard by now….. This drone has one video shooting mode and that is 1080p 30fps. That is, THE ONLY video shooting option. SO, if you want the best quality video for PROFESSIONAL usage, THIS IS NOT IT! The bigger drones such as the mavic or phantom DO shoot 4k, but keep in mind the bigger size. I believe since this phantom does not have another option, I would NOT purchase this drone if you wanted to use it for professional use such as weddings. The 1080p video shoots beautiful video, but if someone were paying you for a job, I don’t think the video is good enough. So before purchasing the spark, just be aware you won’t get the top notch 4k video you do see on youtube, but will still be able to capture BEAUTIFUL video. This spark is in another category and you really cannot compare the spark to a mavic pro or drones of that price. The camera has a 2 axis gimbal. Now if you are a total newbie like me, this basically means that the footage will be a little more shaky vs the video footage of a mavic which has a 3 axis gimbal. Once again, this did not matter to me as I am doing this for fun and not trying to make money off of it. The 2 axis gimbal is GREATLY sufficient for all of my needs as of now. But, I do see where a 3 axis gimbal would definitely help when flying at top speeds or turning left and right. Since this was my first drone, I was in shock of the stabilization, and most likely you will be as well if this is your first drone. It was very stable in the winds by my house of 10 mph. Speaking of speed, DJI stated a top speed of 31 MPH, but I was able to reach 30 MPH, but if you fly with the direction of the wind in sport mode (which is only available with the controller which I believe is a MUST), you can get speeds of 31+ MPH. One of the BIGGEST CONS of the spark is …… BATTERY LIFE! Since I was a beginner at this, I was learning as I was flying but in the midst of my learning experience the drone would be at 20% battery and I would have to land it. DJI claims 16 minutes of battery, but lets be real. This was no where near possible even with low wind. I would give it 10-12 minutes of flight time. SO do not expect anything more, this forced me to purchase a second battery. Another big con for me was the charging time! I would have to wait about 50 minutes for a full charge which is done via a micro usb cable which is very convenient because you can charge this bad boy on the go with an external battery pack. (but charging via wall outlet is quicker FYI) I was able to get to about 1.3 miles away in an OPEN FIELD while flying the drone which was plenty for me.(again you can only reach this range with the controller) I was a bit scared to fly it out of my site as it is extremely scary and if this is your first drone, you will feel the exact same. If you fly with your mobile device/ipad, you will only be able to reach about 80-100 yards. (thumbs down) So one of the super cool features of this spark is the hand gestures or I thought… I absolutely love the fact that you could take photos of yourself/others in a group setting with no controller or phone. You can simply launch the drone via your palm and use gestures for It to take pictures. Im not sure if mine did not properly work due to some what heavy winds or what. But I was NOT ABLE to get it down pack, and YES I am doing everything properly. But if mine were to work properly, I actually think this feature is very very neat and useful if you were at a party or graduation. So all in all, I do believe this drone is meant to be a beginner/ “I just want a drone for fun” type of person. Sure, it can take beautiful 1080p video footage, but you won’t be as surprised of the video quality if you get used to watching the mavic/phantom quality. I am not disappointed in this drone at all, and later down the road once I master flying this thing, I will upgrade. But as a first drone/learning drone, this is all you need for practice. Also, in order to get beautiful footage, you should travel to different places even if its in the same area. You will be very surprised how beautiful mother nature is all around us. You do not need to travel to different countries to get beautiful scenery. I greatly recommend this drone WITH the purchase of the controller! The size of this thing makes it so portable and easy to carry around. Hope you enjoyed my review, and if you did please thumbs up :)
