Targeting sports, wildlife, and action shooters, this FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Lens from Sony will satisfy many photographers and videographers who are looking for a bit of extra reach with their full-frame E-mount camera. As a member of the G Master line, it is designed for outstanding resolution and sharpness with minimal aberrations, something assisted by the implementation of one Super ED and two ED elements as well as a Nano AR coating. It also features a relatively compact size through the use of an f/4.5-5.6 maximum aperture range, and it is equipped with both a Direct Drive SSM autofocus system as Optical SteadyShot image stabilization for outstanding performance at all focal lengths.

The lens features numerous other settings and controls for making operation smooth and intuitive for a variety of shooting styles. This includes a zoom torque adjustment ring that lets users dial in the stiffness of the zoom mechanism. It also has an internal focus system with a minimum focus distance of just 3.22' as well as focus range limiter switch for faster focusing. Other physical controls and options include multiple customizable focus hold buttons, an AF/MF switch, and a removable and rotatable tripod mount. Additionally, it has a dust- and weather-resistant construction and a nine-blade circular diaphragm.

As part of Sony's esteemed G Master series, this lens is designed to achieve notably high resolution and sharpness through the correction of a wide variety of spherical and chromatic aberrations. Additionally, these lenses feature robust and intuitive-to-handle physical designs to benefit both photography and cine applications.
A far-reaching telephoto zoom designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras, this 100-400mm lens is also compatible with APS-C models where it provides a 150-600mm equivalent focal length range.
A maximum aperture range of f/4.5-5.6 helps minimize size and weight while providing excellent performance in a variety of applications.
Two extra-low dispersion elements and one Super ED element are featured in the lens design and help to control chromatic aberrations and reduce color fringing for increased clarity and color fidelity.
A Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
A Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor AF system and internal focus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance and also contributes to more natural, intuitive manual focus control.
A zoom torque adjustment ring will help provide users with added control over the zoom function of the lens.
A floating elements system benefits image quality when working at the 3.22' minimum focusing distance with 0.35x magnification.
Focus range limiter and focus hold controls offer more intuitive handling and faster performance when photographing moving subjects.
Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.
The front lens element features a fluorine coating to protect against smudges and dust from adhering to the glass surface.
A rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Removable rotating tripod mount permits quick switching from horizontal to vertical shooting orientations.
Compatible with Sony's 1.4x and 2x FE teleconverters for reaching distances of up to 800mm.
The included lens hood features a filter access window and a lock switch.

FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Lens is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 55.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It was worth the wait. This lens is as good as the reviews say it is. Over the years having had several previous similar lenses -- 70-400 and some super telephotos e.g. 150-600 -- I can say this one beats them all, as predicted. Amazingly, it even gives good image results at 1200 mm on my Sony A6500 using the 2x converter! At that extreme, the autofocus is very slow and pretty much limited to shooting wide open and contrast is reduced, but the images are good. At normal without the converters focus is fast and accurate. Handling is smooth and pleasant; size is remarkably small for its range. Very pleased with this lens indeed. It was well worth the wait and the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible Lens I own or have owned nearly all of the Sony FE lenses. I think this is the best lens of them all in terms of relative performance. As a note, I have fairly extensively shot the Nikon 80-400mm II on D8XX bodies, the Sony A-mount 70-400mm II on the A99/A7RII and the great Canon 100-400mm II on the 5DSR/A7RII. This lens is noticeably sharper than all of them at 400mm, wide-open. Overall performance on the A9 is absolutely stunning! By the way, the Really Right Stuff Arca Swiss plate for the Sony GM 70-200mm f2.8 works perfectly on this lens, replacing the Sony bracket.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent lens. Caution with the mounting foot. I've been shooting birds with this lens plus the 1.4 x tele for about 5 months on an a6500. After going thru the process of fine tuning my technique and settings, I am very happy with the results I'm getting. I am a big fan of this lens. I am specifically posting this review to mention a minor issue that if not monitored, could cause a rather serious failure in the field. After five months of use I started to notice a little wiggle in the tripod foot assembly. Upon investigation, I found the 4 screws that hold the mounting plate to the lens collar had come VERY loose (see picture) -- as in I removed them with my fingers! Not a show stopper for the lens, but I recommend monitoring this and hitting the screws with a little Loctite for peace of mind.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for covering a wide range of telephoto shots This is a wider lens than the Sony FE 70-200 f/2.8 that I also have, but it is roughly the same length. Despite the slower speed, it is the telephoto lens I now carry most often. Took photos of a graduation, pairing this lens with the A7RIII, and they were even better than I expected. Still love the 70-200 - the big benefit being speed - but if I had to choose between the 100-400 and the 70-200, I would choose the 100-400. Thought seriously about the 70-200 with a teleconverter, but based on what I've read, the native 100-400 lens will produce higher quality images, and a teleconverter is just one more thing to carry. I would definitely buy this lens again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Got it ? Get it !!! On a6500: Very sharp, fast focus, bokeh, bokeh, bokeh; is one reason why I bought this lens. OSS helps big time because it's a bit heavy. First shot with lens, really loving it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have waited 2 years for this lens and it is worth it! Very sharp image quality. I have been using it with the a6500 for wildlife and comparing it to my old setup of a Nikon D500 with the 200-500mm. It seems just as sharp. This lens is much quieter than the Nikkor. The size and weight is nice for hiking. The lens has an amazingly close minimal focus distance and is surprisingly good for shooting insects. I like the removable foot which makes packing it into a tight camera backpack easy. If Sony is smart they will produce some quick release accessories for this such as the eyes for your shoulder strap or an ARCA Swiss plate. It is a lens done right, and I have to thank Sony for all the obvious thought that must have gone into it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very excellent This lens is relatively small in size and light for a 400mm zoon lens. So its a great travel/hiking lens. Because its a bit slow it can be a challenge under low light conditions, but digital cameras are making slower lens very workable. I use it mostly for large wildlife but I have also found that it can close focus so it allows one to make some dramatic photographs with a lot of compression and nice out of focus backgrounds. So its also great for photography of people who would be uncomfortable with a close up under a normal lens. The sharpness of the lens is amazing but you have to be very carful about critical focus and lens shake. The autofocus works well but you need to make sure its focusing on the right thing. I use it on the Sony R7II. That camera is very demanding but with care the images are outstanding with this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Native Telephoto Lens Greater than 200mm I use this lens for birds and wildlife primarily, but the close focusing capabilities make it a versatile lens for portraits and landscape also. It is a little on the short side for birds, but it pairs great with the FE 1.4x Teleconverter with apparent no negative effects on focusing speed nor sharpness. I use this with the A7R2, and the focusing speed is much better than other similar lenses I have tried in the past. I've had both versions of the A-mount 70-400mm (used them on the A77II and A99 as well as with the A7R2 and A6300 with the LAEA3 and the LAEA4), as well as the first version of the Tamron 150-600mm, and this lens is much quicker to focus and better image quality. I believe that the bokeh is pleasant. From what I've read, this lens would work even better with the A9. I look forward to trying this combination one of these days. But even with the A7R2, I believe that this is the best lens that's out there that has a greater focal length than the 300mm.
