Litepanels Astra overview

  • 1Description

At one time the only way you could focus your light source was by using a Fresnel or PAR fixture. Litepanels, a pioneer in the LED field, has changed that with the introduction of the Astra Bi-Focus Daylight LED Panel. Fresnels and PARs can be cumbersome but Litepanels uses two sets of lenses in the panel to allow spot-to-flood beam adjustment from 15 degrees to 45 degrees in a fixture that is only 5.3" thick. The 15-degree beam angle is handy in situations where you want to isolate a subject, control spill, or for long throw applications; whereas 45 degrees is ideal for wide coverage. And best of all you can adjust your coverage without moving the light, a valuable capability when the Astra is hung overhead or mounted in a hard to reach place. This is where the Astra's control features will be appreciated. While you can make adjustments on the unit, you can also control dimming (from 0 to 100%), focus, and turning the cooling fan on or off, with the purchase of a Bluetooth or DMX module - a great option in sound sensitive environments.

The Astra Bi-Focus offers all the benefits of using an LED light source and then some. The light features a low power draw of 105W with a high output, while maintaining a high TLCI/CRI rating of 95, indicating accurate and precise color rendering. The Astra Bi-Focus Daylight is ready for worldwide use thanks to the included 100 - 240 VAC power supply, but it can also run on 14.4V professional batteries with the purchase of a V-Mount or Gold-Mount battery plate for situations where mains power is unavailable. Mounting options include a 5/8" receiver, or alternatively, two 1/4"-20 mounting points.

    Litepanels Astra reviews

Astra Bi-Focus Daylight LED Panel is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from When will ALL companies spec their lights accurately? This isnt just a problem with Litepanels, but with everyone. The mind-blowing specs for this light (and the sale) are why I ordered 2, now Im debating if I want to keep one or not. They are super-bright for sure, but not as crazy as the specs suggest. On Litepanels site, this is rated at 90,364 lux at 3.5ft. My Sekonic 478dr says 36,000. At 10 theyre rated at 8133, and my meter says 5,500. So even conservatively, theyre rating these a HALF-STOP (50% brighter) than they actually are. With the oddly specific ratings (not 90,000 lux, but 90,364... and the 10 rating of 8133) how are they missing it by this much? The good news is this light is a legit 3x brighter than the Astra 6x bi-color, but their numbers would have you believe its at least 5x brighter... so thats a pretty big miss. Also, for those who wondered, the spot to flood is achieved much the same way the bi-colors get a mix of color. There are 2 different types of LEDs that make up the array; the normal daylight LEDs from the bi-color (as best I can tell) and then some special spot-version daylight LEDs... as you turn the dial from one to the other it gradually turns off one and turns on the other. The other effect from this, is a hotter beam center in anything other than full flood. Thats 2 pretty significant considerations with this light. I thought it may be ideal as a 400w HMI replacement, and it may be, but Im a little thrown that its not as bright as the specs claim, by a significant margin... and that intermediate settings between spot and flood means theres a gradually brighter center with a feathered edge so its not like you have a butter smooth edge to edge lumens as youd have with a good fresnel... HOWEVER... theres no free lunch, and this is, at spot, 3x brighter than the 6x bi-color in daylight only mode. THREE TIMES brighter is a pretty big deal, and probably enough to use this to compete with direct sun for a live shot... but why claim its a wacky FIVE TIMES brighter? That leaves your marketing claiming 50% more juice than its got at a distance... and claiming OVER 100% more juice up close! (at 3.5ft... 36,000 vs 90,000? Cmon man).
