Litepanels Astra overview

  • 1Description

Litepanels continues to expand and enhance their formidable LED line with the introduction of the Astra 6X Bi-Color LED Panel that is 6x the brightness of the original Bi-Color 1x1. As in previous versions of the 1x1 form factor, the Astra has variable tungsten to daylight color temperature with negligible color shift, 0-100% dimming and a universal (100-240 VAC) adapter. You can also run on 13-24 VDC batteries with separate purchase of a V-Mount or Gold Mount battery plate.

The technological advancement and enhancement is evident in the high CRI and significantly increased brightness due to the use of tightly-binned LEDs and fine-tuned TIR (Total Internal Reflection) optics, resulting in a longer throw over a wider field. Another addition is the Astra Bi-Color's Dual Cooling. Choose the fan/convection mode or run silent with the field-replaceable fan off. You can control the Astra's functions locally or remotely with separate purchase of a DMX module. The Astra 6X Bi-Color comes with both US and EU power cables and a removable 5/8" TVMP connecter for hanging or stand mounting. Two 1/4"-20 female taps offer alternate mounting points.

    Litepanels Astra reviews

Astra 6X Bi-Color LED Panel is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I needed. I have several Dracast panels that serve me well, but they're just not bright enough to fill talent outdoors. After a little research, I settled on this Astra 6X, based mostly on it's specs and it's ability to work with a single Anton Bauer battery. It ain't easy comparing units with lux, footcandles and varying numbers in feet and meters. But based on it's advertised output, the 6X seemed like the best bang for the buck. In my unscientific side by side eyeball test, this 6X puts out about twice the light of the Dracast. I usually punch panels through silk or diffusion, but used open face and cranked up, the 6X does make some serious, hard light. The color seems great, without any noticeable green or magenta cast. I'm going to drag it around europe next week and we'll see how it holds up. A note about batteries. After a long discussion with the Litepanels tech, this is what I learned: This thing draws 104 watts at full output, so you need at least a 120,150WH or larger battery on it. A 90WH battery is not going to make you happy. My A/B 150's should work well. Also, some battery manufacturers put current protection in even their largest batteries, so even if they should work based on their specs, they may not. I realize Litepanels is owned by the same company as Anton/Bauer, but I really feel his advice was based on real feedback from surprised users.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Definitely more power than original Litepanel Have not used it in the field yet but in a test it is definitely a more powerful output from previous generations. Slightly awkward design but the Astra's are well built and I have had little trouble with them. The only real design flaw is when you use a battery plate for running the light there are separate cables and thus things hang off it. I can't believe it couldn't be designed so that the battery adapter would somehow plus into the power supply so the same source cable to the unit head would be used.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pleased but not everything that I wanted. Overall I am very pleased with my purchase. I measured the color accuracy and it is right on it terms of color temperature, however, as with almost all LED lights, there is a slight green tint. Very small almost unnoticeable, but on caucasian skin tones I find it necessary to gel it with a 1/8 or 1/4 minus green. The ARRI SkyPanels and other more expensive lights have a green adjustment which makes them very accurate, but you pay for the RGB control that those lights give. The Brightness of the Lightpanels are very good, but because it is not a focusable lamp, its throw is limited. The build quality is good, but the way the AC cable attaches to the tallest is poorly designed. I bought this on a promotional discount, I am not sure that I would have bought it had it not been for the substantial savings.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bright LED Panel I bought this panel for its brightness (foot-candles). It seems to live up to its promise. I wish the construction of the plastic frame was tougher. It seems a little weak for the premium price. Also a battery bracket (A/B or V) should be included in the price. The 3 pin xlr DC power input plug is not the industry standard as is the 4 xlr.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Difficult set to light I recently had a challenging set to light, a hallway of front projection on to the walls. I needed to light talent 3 people across walking towards camera while tracking backwards. The solution was to use a directional soft source that I could control light from contaminating the walls and do it quickly. I had a chance to test an older Astra 4x model at the rental house with a Chimera and 1/2 grid diffusion. I was so pleased with the intensity and control, so I rented one and bought one (the Astra 6x with the dopsnap bag 40 degree grid and diff set, Anton Bauer gold mount. Everything worked great. The chimera fell off the rented Astra at one point, the DOP Snapbox prevailed without a hitch. The reason for the 4 stars is although I got it at a sale price, this stuff is very expensive for what it is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great light It's what you would expect. Lots of output - can bounce off ceiling or put through heavy diffusion. It's a bit bulkier build then other panels so finding a good bag/case is a bit harder but I can't take away a star just for that. Also - it's pretty stripped down. No battery mount, case, diffusion, egg crate, etc. But for the price it's still great.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good and bright , does not work with a Cintenna RX . Litepanels 6x bi-color is a great bright light. thats a work horse in my kit.my only issue is the DMXModule does not work with Innovative Dimmers Cintennas, Bummer if it did i would rig it as back light. Now it just sits next to camera with a soft box as quick fill, to bad was hoping to get a few.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great light I really like the light. It has punch when needed and can dim down nicely. I am using the d-fuse light panel to soften it up. I don't know how much better the snap diffusion lite panels sells, but the d-fuse is a whole lot less!
