After watching a program about using spikes on YouTube, I got these for my large Benro carbon fiber tripod. Then, I more or less replicated the YouTube comparison of with and without the spikes. Spikes win in a landslide! In this particular case, I was shooting on deep snow and on hard ice. These things plunge right down through soft sand, snow and deep, tightly intertwined grasses to firmer ground, giving me instantly better results when using my 300mm f/28 VR Nikon lens.

I have used these spikes multiple times out in the field. I have tried other brands of spikes, all of which were either shorter and/or not as solid (or made out of cheaper material). The RRS spikes are superior. These RRS spikes are long enough (3) and are solid and heavy enough (and well machined) to truly anchor the tripods legs into the ground. For me they are worth the money, because they really get the job done, and they will probably last a lifetime.
