Sony DPT-RP1 reviews

13.3" 16GB DPT-RP1 Digital Paper System & Gray Cover Kit is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product!!! I finally received this product after months waiting. Overall this is an amazing tablet. I was surprised by the weight when I received the package. Even though it's 13.3, larger than any iPad, it's so slim and light. I prefer digital paper over LCD screens because they appear more natural. The matte screen resembles paper very much. Writing with the stylus feels pretty much the same as writing on real paper. The only drawback is the storage. It does not support SD card extension, and transferring files can only be done through the Sony Digital Paper App. One more thing I find odd is the stylus runs out of battery quite fast. It was almost empty when I received it yesterday, I charged it full, and it's out of battery again today. I only used it for less than 2 hours in the meantime.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for reading academic papers This is a great E-reader. Perfect for reading and annotating papers. The only negative thing I have to say is that it can synchronize only with a computer (PC/mac). This is unfortunate, as I'd love to be able to upload/download pdfs using my iPhone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for students Instead of telling all those good points that everyone is talking about, I would just tell why I knocked off one star. It takes a good 25sec to power up. There is no navigation to/from Table of Contents. The tip wears of too quickly. It is only $2 per tip, but it will add up soon. To me the tip lasted only 50 pages of taking notes. There is no undo feature. If you accidentally delete a page or some notes, it is gone forever. The suede cover gets dirty really quick. The device is attached to the cover by a 2-way sticker. There is no easy way to use the device taking off the cover once put on. You'll have to discard the cover if you take it off. Don't get the cover, it is not worth it. The battery doesn't last more than 3-4 days, when I am using it for 5-8 hours/day, reading eBooks and taking notes at school. The specs say it lasts 3-4 weeks with 1 hr of use. Who uses it for 1 hr a day after paying so much.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good reader for research/institutional use From the outset, it should be obvious that Sony's Digital Paper system is intended for institutional use. The installation process for the mandatory piece of software that Sony ships goes so far as to have you install a security certificate, and even validates with an access code shown on the device. It's a system that, I think, is designed to work in an enterprise setting: a law firm or a research company. The device itself is very thin and very light; compared to this, Kindle DX feels like a monstrosity. I purchased the tablet together with the cover, only to find that the cover attaches to the device via an adhesive - not something I want to be doing, though I'm still keeping the cover in order to protect the tablet. The pen and the tablet both have microUSB slots for charging. My pen came discharged, so I had to charge it up before calibrating. Interestingly, when the device is charged, it turns off its LED instead of switching it from red to green. Resolution wise, the table is good enough. I wouldn't quite call it 'retina' but pixels are small enough that you don't really notice. The black-white contrast is really not that high compared to some other e-ink readers, and this is something to watch out for if you are expecting 100% paper-like experience. I am VERY impressed with the way this device renders pages: PDF rendering, both sequential and random access, is blazing-fast. I've even tried image-heavy magazine PDFs and they render astonishingly well. I am also VERY impressed with the pen: it is very responsive (not instant, like an iPencil, but very, very fast) and it leaves very good looking lines when I draw on the books/articles, very aesthetically pleasing. Sony have clearly spent time making it all work. The pen has two buttons on it, one for erasing your annotations, another for highlighting words. The highlighting functionality I'm not so impressed with: this is not a color tablet, so it highlights words by making their background gray - too gray, in fact, for my liking. So to sum things up, if you are a student, researcher, or just work a lot with digital documents that you have to read, especially if they are typeset in TeX or have formulae in them, this is one of the best devices out there on the market today. I'm having a lot of fun using it for reading and annotating, and I hope you do too!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty good; not quite as good as expected Very nice hardware. Software is very simple, and it many ways is actually does less than the older digital paper which I also have. However the old one had a significant software update after about a year; hopefully this one will too. Requires you to use a computer to sync; can't do it on its own via wifi like the old one. Until I wrote an automator script (on my mac) to sync via bluetooth (not wifi) and disconnect, the battery life was terrible compared to the old one. Now it seems OK but not as good as old one still. I used to charge the old one once a week with no trouble; now I need to charge new one at least once a week. I use it daily for reading and writing up mathematical solutions and marking schemes. It's annoying that the pen now needs to be charged as well, but not a biggie. Syncing, even though a computer is required, as now really fast compared to old one. Screen looks nicer, but it doesn't load as quickly as I expected, only a little bit faster than the old one. Also, with the case, it's a bit heavier than the old DPS with sleeve, probably because of the glue-like sticky pad with which you stick it onto the case. If you are reimbursed for the cost from your university like I am, I would definitely recommend! I'm not sure how much of my own money I'd spend on it, though perhaps I would.
