Genaray Contender overview

  • 1Description

The Contender LED Focusing Spot 3-Light Kit was put together by Genaray to give image makers in the studio or on location the benefit of a setup based on a light with wide adjustment options in color temperature, light intensity, beam coverage and power. The kit comes with three Contender LED heads. Each light comes with removable 4-way barndoors, multi-voltage AC adapter, ball head mount, two NP-F750 batteries, a battery charger and a filter insert. A hard travel case is included for storage and transport.

The versatile 3.25 x 3.25 x 8.25" Contender LED Focusing Spot Light from Genaray has a compact form factor, variable light intensity, focus, and color temperature, as well as power options that make it well-suited to location work. The Contender is dimmable from 100 to 10% and its color is variable from 3200 to 5600K while maintaining a CRI/TLCI rating of 95/96, indicating faithful and accurate color rendition. You can fine tune the color or add diffusion materials for softness using the integrated filter frame. Yet another sign of versatility is the Contender's adjustable angle lens. The lens offers wide 55-degree coverage that can be focused down to a 25-degree spot for selective lighting or sharp-shadowed sunlight effects. The fixture's light source is a 50W high-density matrix LED array that generates negligible heat, allowing you to squeeze it into tight places or work up close to the talent without being concerned about hazard or discomfort.

Powering the Contender offers two options. The light is ready for worldwide use, thanks to its 100-240 VAC power adapter. Just add an inexpensive plug adapter that matches the socket of the country you're traveling to. The Contender also includes a battery module, charger, and two NP-F750 batteries to power the light when mains current is unavailable. A carry case is included for storage and transport.

Adjustable Beam Angle
The adjustable focus mechanism provides a beam angle from a 25° spot to a 55° flood. This makes it ideal for faces as well as backgrounds.
Bi-Color
Simply dial in color temperature from 3200 - 5600K or anywhere in between to match other fixtures, ambient light conditions, or just for creative effects.
Color Fidelity
The Contender has a CRI rating of 95 and a TLCI rating of 96, indicating a faithful and accurate rendition of color.
Power Options
Run on 100-240 VAC current or included NP-F750 batteries when mains power is unavailable.
Cool Running
The Contender generates barely perceptible heat. Squeeze the light into tight places or position it close to the talent without risk of hazard or discomfort.
Flicker-free
The Contender's LEDs output constant flicker-free light that's well-suited for shooting video at a high frame rate or in slow motion without a strobing effect.
Removable Barndoors
The 4-way barndoors help you illuminate areas that you want to and keep light from areas that you don't want to light.
Filter or Diffuse the Light Output
The Contender has an integrated frame that allows insertion of diffusion materials for softer light or gel filters to balance the color temperature or for creative effects.
Modular Design
The light's modular design makes it possible to incorporate a battery module to make use of the two provided NP-F750 batteries when mains power is not available.

    Genaray Contender reviews

Contender LED Focusing Spot 3-Light Kit with Battery Module Kit (Bi-Color) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Cool and Extremely Useful I'm primarily a still portrait photographer and this light is a great addition to my continuous kit. The adjustable color temperature lets me match the temperature of my HMI and it plays beautifully with other daylight balanced LED lights. This is a small light source, so do not buy it thinking you're going to create soft, diffused light. That's not what this light is for. You can soften and diffuse a bit by placing the light behind a panel or diffusion material. You won't be able to fill an umbrella with light, even in the flood position. This is a hard light source and is fantastic when used as such. As a high contrast main light source and for old Hollywood style lighting, it's fantastic. Bringing it in as a kicker, rim or hair light also works really well. Output is great, color consistency seems to be very good, and the battery life makes it quite usable for the duration of a photo shoot or to use on location as a main or supplemental light source. Build quality is impressive and design is good. I do think the battery module and method of installation and removal could be better and a bit more elegant. In low light, it's almost impossible to align the module and I can see the pins being bent or damaged due to an improper installation. The ball head is a good idea but I would have preferred a standard tilt/swivel mount. All in all, a great light source.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Light Despite Clunky Battery Module I'm a run-and-gun video shooter and this is the perfect kind of light for getting a nice rim light, or even a harsh key/fill (when in flood mode). It's also great for adding texture to a scene when it's not on a subject. I've spent a while with this light before I gave it a proper review and while I don't own other LED Fresnel lights, I can't see how anything else would offer a real advantage over this. The quality of the light is superb, and when working with mostly LED panels, the Contender offers a great alternative to avoiding multiple shadows. Also, having it be bi-color is pretty darn nifty. The build quality is top notch. Feels like a solid hunk of metal, but isn't too heavy at the same time. At first I was skeptical about there being a ball head mount as opposed to a traditional yoke, but I realized it's actually a VERY versatile feature of the light and am glad they applied it to this unit. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the battery module. Not sure if it's just me, but it takes me an unnecessarily long time to put on, and I still feel like I'm about to break something every time I put it on. I would recommend improving this on the next model. That being said, I'm rarely in a position where I need to rely on the battery, so most of the time it just stays in the VERY convenient case. It's nice to have it when I do really need it, though. Overall, highly recommend this light.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Compact Focusing LED So many things I think are amazing on this LED! First it comes with everything you need batteries, barn doors, arca swiss mount & ball head, and padded carry case. After first opening this it was all neatly packed in a form fitted foam case. This case will protect the gear for my offsite jobs. It gets really good once you power the LED up, the easy to use controls show you everything on a easy to read display. You can power it on and control the dimmer and with a quick click control the color temp with the same dial. The plug has a pretty small connector and seems to be proprietary - which I am not a huge fan of but its not a deal breaker. Battery (dual) seemed to have good life span and keep the lights illuminated during my shoots. As always I suggest wall power when available to avoid disruption with low batteries. Removal and installation of the battery section is not something you will want to do often - it has a very specific way it attaches, so make sure not to jam it in. My main reason for adding this light to my LED arsenal is because of the "Fresnel" spotlight focusing feature. And it performs amazing for such an affordable and lightweight light! The ring can make the light focus or spotlight a subject and the removable barn doors really help keep light on my subject and off of the backdrop! I highly reco this fixture to filmmakers, interviewers and photographers that need to control a lights output. Now I need to pickup a second one!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, affordable hard light for studio I've only had a few chances to work with this, but it delivers exactly what I hoped for. Great color-temp and brightness control, sturdy construction. The ball-mount and rigging options are not ideal, but they work, and I would expect to see some shortcomings in a light at this price-point. It's ideal for fiddling around in the studio, but I would not recommend relying on it in a demanding professional setting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well priced, lightweight, easy to use I was looking for an affordable continuous light that wouldn't get too hot and could also work on battery - and this is it! There were not too many lights that fitted all of my requirements, so I'm very glad to have found this light. I've only recently purchased this light and have used it a couple of times but so far, I really like it. In the future, I will look at purchasing a couple more to add to my kit. I see it as an investment as when I can afford a more powerful light, these lights will absolutely still have use as fills. As other reviews mentioned, it does have fan noise, I've used it for video and have had no issue with the noise of the fan, especially if using a mic on my subject. The only small annoyance are the pins used to put together the battery / power head to the light. It's a little finicky but in the big scheme of things - it's not a deal breaker at all. The bag it comes with is great too - stores everything neatly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Light This light is great for the price. It’s compact and puts out a good bit of light. It comes with a couple batteries. They last a little over an hour on 100%. Perfect for what I need.
