Available for download, Gig Performer from Deskew Technologies is a host application catered specifically to performers, allowing them to access their VST plug-ins without using a DAW. It is useful for guitar players, keyboardists, singers, drummers, or any instrumentalists interfacing with digital elements in a live performance setting. Using this software, guitar players can control their amp simulations from MIDI pedalboards; keyboardists can control parameters of soft-synths on the fly; singers can add verb, compression, and delay to their voice at will. Even FOH engineers can benefit from the software, using it to add effects processing and then send the results to the mixing desk.

After you direct the software to search through your specified folders allocated for VST plug-ins, Gig Performer will give you an easy-to-use, intuitive GUI, offering virtual rack spaces that represent either a complete song in your set, or a section of a song; these rack spaces can contain all the software you’d need to achieve that end. As with physical, corporeal rack spaces, Gig Performer’s digital equivalents have front and back panels. The front panel allows you to instantiate controls Deskew Technologies calls “Widgets.” Each Widget gives you a pictorial representation of a MIDI-controllable effect. For instance, you can creative a wah-wah Widget which, not coincidentally, looks like a wah-wah pedal. Then, simply assign that Widget to a wah-wah effect in, say, Guitar Rig, and, in turn, use the wah-wah Widget to manipulate the tone of an amplifier in a plug-in such as IK AmpliTube 4. You can assign Widgets to MIDI controllers of any type, and apply the Widget technique to any tweakable, third-party plug-in at any point in your chain.

The back panel, on the other hand, allows you to connect plug-ins within a rack space in any order you choose, using a simple click-and-drag operation reminiscent of routing modules within FabFilter synthesizers, or routing sounds within programs such as Max/MSP. It’s no coincidence, one might add, that Gig Performer provides extensive support for systems such as Max/MSP to help you enable particularly complex routing schemes.

A predictive loading feature ensures that you load effects efficiently and effectively, giving you all the processing you’d need in a given rack space—as well as a selectable number of rack spaces adjacent to the one you’re currently using. This feature gives you the ability to switch instantaneously between plug-in configurations, and even lets you hold down notes loaded in one rack space as you switch to another. Predictive loading effectively bypasses plug-ins in faraway rack spaces, keeping the CPU load optimized for live performance. Switching to rack spaces in non-adjacent racks may not be instantaneous, but it’s still pretty speedy nonetheless.

Gig Performer also features support for Plogue Arts’s Bidule, as well as OSC support for integration with tablets and smartphones. This software is compatible with Windows platforms, requiring Windows 7 or above. You'll also need a 64-bit system, an OpenGL-capable graphics card, and 34 MB of hard drive space during installation.
