Nikon W300 overview

  • 1Description

Characterized by its tough exterior, the yellow Nikon COOLPIX W300 is a sleek point-and-shoot featuring a reinforced physical design, along with apt multimedia imaging capabilities. Designed for adventures, and even everyday mishaps, the camera is waterproof-rated for depths up to 100' as well as shockproof for falls from up to 7.9' high and freezeproof for temperatures down to 14°F. In regard to imaging, a high-resolution 16MP BSI CMOS sensor benefits both stills shooting as well as video recording, with the ability to shoot continuously up to 7 fps, record video at UHD 4K/30p, and produce low noise imagery with a sensitivity range of ISO 100-6400. A 5x optical zoom lens spans wide-angle to telephoto focal lengths, and Vibration Reduction helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld imagery. Additionally, the W300 also incorporates SnapBridge wireless connectivity, which uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for seamlessly sharing imagery and remotely controlling the camera from a linked device. Built-in GPS is also available for geotagging your imagery in-camera.

Rugged Design
The W300 is designed to withstand a wide variety of conditions, ranging from harsh climates to everyday mishaps:
  • Waterproof-rated to IPX8 for use underwater to depths of 100' / 30m (JIS Class 8)
  • Freezeproof to temperatures as low as 14°F / -10°C
  • Shockproof-rated to MIL-STD 810F Method 516.5-Shock for falls from 7.9' / 2.4m high
  • Dustproof to protect the internal components of the camera
16MP BSI CMOS Sensor
Featuring a 16MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor, the W300 is capable of recording high-resolution stills and UHD 4K/30p video with low noise and high clarity. The sensor also affords a sensitivity range of ISO 100-6400, for working in a variety of lighting conditions, and a continuous shooting rate of 7 fps to suit photographing moving subjects.
NIKKOR 5x Optical Zoom Lens and Vibration Reduction
Spanning wide-angle to telephoto focal lengths, the 5x optical zoom lens covers a 24-120mm equivalent range to suit photographing a wide array of subject types. Benefitting the lens's reach, optical VR (Vibration Reduction) helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake when shooting handheld, and Electronic VR is available to help steady movie footage while moving.
SnapBridge Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and GPS
SnapBridge wireless connectivity uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to permit wireless sharing of images to a linked mobile device, as well as the ability to remotely control the camera from your smartphone or tablet. Built-in GPS also lets you geotag your imagery while shooting, and the camera also features an eCompass, altimeter, depth gauge, and barometer to record the environmental data of your shoot.
Body Design
Beyond the tough construction of the body, it also sports an ergonomic design and large right-hand grip for easy one-handed shooting or for use while wearing gloves. The rear 3.0" 921k-dot LCD monitor has an anti-glare coating for easier viewing in bright conditions, and a dedicated Tool button on the camera body gives you easy access to GPS, eCompass, and other location functions. Additionally, if wearing heavy gloves, camera modes can be changed simply by moving the camera.

Nikon W300 reviews

COOLPIX W300 Digital Camera (Yellow) is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have always preferred Nikon I needed a good knock around digital point and shoot camera. The Nikon Coolpix W300 seems to fit my needs, something I can take to the beach, back packing, kayaking, without fear of breaking it. My only dislike is the lack of manual control, no f stops or shutter speed that I can set. I have it set at ISO 800, to stop it down and increase speed. Test photos for a point and shoot camera so far are outstanding. The altimeter and compass feature is cute, but as per the instructions, I wouldn't bet my life on it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better image quality than expected As a prosumer - I'm a professional artist and take lots of photos for reference, of my work, and for fun, but am not a professional photographer, what I need is a camera I can take hiking and kayaking, and everywhere, so I can take good photos spontaneously and not worry about the camera. I've had the Coolpix two weeks now and took it kayaking right away and the photo and video quality blew me away. I suppose the image stabilization was working because even while paddling (camera was on a mini-tripod strapped to my deck) the quality was great. Close-ups are amazing. You could count the hairs - literally - on a photo I took of an ant crawling over gravel. I should have, but did not test it underwater - the water is not clear here in Kansas! It did get splashed a lot no problem. I'm testing it for a trip to SE Alaska soon and am trying to learn all its bells and whistles. My old point and shoot was the Pentax WG 1 and I was mostly happy with that for the last 7 years but the Coolpix blows those images away. The Coolpix took great photos even in my darkened house where low light situations - esp people at parties inside, were always fails - blurry with noise and worthless. This has amazing white balance and auto exposure. Yes, I hate having to be online to scroll through the 100's of pages of the manual. Other cons - like reviews for the previous version, it's exasperating that you have to charge this with the door open! I'm going to the rain forest wilderness, so I have to charge this from a battery pack inside a dry bag every time, I guess. And the manual says not to use any other charger. Come on. Also, I loved the beefy strap and carabiner on my old Pentax and this has strong, but tiny little slots for the tiny strings on the provided strap. I added a small key ring for a web strap and carabiner of my own. As mentioned with previous versions, it scratches easily, is not very grippy, and I've only gotten the GPS to load once. Overall, pleased.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 3.5 stars - I like it but it is okay. I bought this camera before a white water rafting trip. I wanted a small rugged camera that could get wet. It survived just fine. I found you really needed to use the pre-sets to get good pictures. I disappointed that there wasn't more manual control but I knew that when I bought it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from too complicated This is supposed to be a rugged point and shoot. The user manual is too convoluted, and the camera as a whole is too complicated, soo I threw it in a drawer and out came my old Olympus. The W300 will only come out of the drawer when I go diving
