Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.4E ED Overview

A fast and versatile wide-angle prime, the AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.4E ED from Nikon is a flexible lens designed for FX-format F-mount DSLRs. Pairing with the comfortable focal length is the bright f/1.4 maximum aperture, which benefits working in low-light conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field. The optical construction utilizes two extra low-dispersion glass elements to correct chromatic aberrations and color fringing for notable clarity and color fidelity, and Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have also been applied to suppress lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast when working in strong lighting conditions. Additionally, three aspherical elements are used to control spherical aberrations and distortion for high sharpness and accurate rendering.

Balancing the optical attributes, the lens is also characterized by a Silent Wave Motor that produces fast, smooth, and quiet autofocus capabilities, along with the ability to manually override focus at any time for more selective control. A rear focusing system also helps maintain the overall lens length during use by solely moving the rear lens group during use for faster performance. An electromagnetic diaphragm is also featured for greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Versatile wide-angle prime is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used on DX models where it provides a 42mm equivalent focal length.
Notably fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field.
Two extra-low dispersion glass elements are used in the optical construction to reduce a variety of chromatic aberrations and color fringing for a high degree of clarity and color neutrality.
Three aspherical elements are featured to control spherical aberrations and distortion in order to produce notable sharpness and resolution.
Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. A rear focusing design is also used, where only the rear lens group is moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Fluorine coating on front element affords protection to the optical system.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Incredible Wide-Angle Lens

I love this lens, I pack it every time I go somewhere. My first zoom way back when was a Tokina 28 to 85, and I have liked 28mm ever since (even though I have shot the Nikon 24mm f/1.4G for years). Super sharp, very well built. Can't say enough good things about it.

This lens is my go-to lens when I'm traveling light. It even improves upon my Nikkor 28mm f/1.4D, which I continue to use on my Nikon film cameras including the F6.

Quiet, fast, and sharp. The fact that it back focuses makes for more accurate focus stacking. Perfect for verticle landscape panoramas and starry night skies.

This lens is amazing, very well built, like a pro lens should be. It is ultra sharp at f/1.4 (yes, ultra sharp), contrast and colors are excellent, distortion and CA are not visible. I'm using this lens on a D800 and so far it is the best wide angle from Nikon I've used, even sharper than my Nikon AF-s 35mm f/1.4G. I protected it with a B+W 77mm XS-pro clear MRC Nano 007 filter without any lost in picture quality. Fantastic lens for landscapes, it is also great for portraits or architecture.

When I bought this lens I thought that I am getting what the money is worth but I been so wrong about it . This lens it has so much distortion that I can not believe it is worse then the previous version . I own them both 1.4D and 1.4E and Sigma 1.4A but if I have to chose one then definitely Sigma is the one! Sorry Nikon but, I have been waiting for to buy this lens for so long and my disappointment can not have been any greater. I should mention that I own nearly the entire Nikon production with the exception of very few rare lenses that I can count them in on single hand .

I just got this lens today and had to try it out right away. I started off in a snowy parking lot, shooting through the window. Even on the back of the D850 I could see this was going to be good. I then shot a bunch of pics inside my place at f/1.4 in a room that was too dark and all the shadows came out nicely. It seems that even on the D850, not known for it's low-light sensitivity, this will provide some smooth shots in the dark. Then I shot of bunch of art, flat paintings, a few sculptures. All rendered beautifully. This little Buddha I picked up over 30 years ago and has been sitting on a side table since then. Shot at f1.4, ISO360, 1/400. Probably the 10th shot out of the lens. Exported as full JPG with CaptureOne 21 and the only thing I did to it is crop. The color is just stunning, as is the bokeh.

It is a wide angle lens, but not the widest in my camera bag. It has become my on camera lens because of its clarity and distortion free characteristics.
