The 5.7K sensor is used to super-sample internal recordings, resulting in higher resolving images with less noise and artifacting when compared to non-super-sampled recordings. Panasonic's acclaimed Dual Native ISO technology is also incorporated into this sensor. Dual Native ISO uses alternative circuitry within the sensor, rather than adding gain or shifting the gamma of the original signal output, to increase sensitivity while maintaining a high signal-to-noise ratio. The standard native ISO is 800, which works for most production situations. This can be switched to 2500 when working in dim scenarios.

An EF lens mount at the front of the body supports a wide range of interchangeable lenses from popular manufacturers. Directly behind the mount is an electronically controlled ND filter wheel offering 2, 4, and 6 stops of filtration for cutting down on excess light, letting you set your lens's aperture to fit the desired aesthetic of your production. For further flexibility, the IR-cut filter is defeatable for shooting in extreme low-light situations or for creative color effects.

On the back end, videos are recorded using 10-bit, 4:2:2 sampling for smooth gradations in subtle shades and a reduction in banding artifacts over 8-bit sampling. Bit rates up to 400 Mb/s are available for high image quality, though lower data rates around 150 Mb/s are available as well to save card space without an extreme image quality penalty. For the highest image quality, the EVA1 will output a 10-bit raw data stream to an external recorder via its BNC terminal. The raw data can then be processed in post-production to extract cinema-grade images with high dynamic range.

Infusing high-resolution recording into a small form factor camera body gives DPs and camera operators the flexibility to achieve cinema-grade images in spaces normally restrictive of larger camera systems. Additionally, since tactile controls and I/O connections are available on the exterior of the camera, the overall design doesn't sacrifice conventional ergonomics for traditional shooting scenarios whether operating handheld or locked down atop a tripod.

5.7K Sensor

Panasonic's 5.7K sensor is at the heart of this camera. Its high resolution allows for oversampled 4K footage, resulting in sharp images with reduced aliasing and increased color fidelity over native 4K Bayer-pattern sensors. Video is recorded on widely available SD cards, providing high-quality recording on accessible, industry-standard media. The full active resolution of the 5.7K sensor can be output via the SDI port as a 10-bit raw data stream for external recording by a compatible recorder.

Dual Native ISO

Utilizing a process that allows the sensor to be read in a fundamentally different way, Dual Native ISO extracts more information from the sensor without affecting the image in the same way as increasing the gain or shifting the gamma. This results in the EVA1 being a camera that can switch from standard sensitivity to high sensitivity with minimal, if any, impact by way of image artifacting. For further reducing noise, several noise reduction modes have been added with firmware 2.5.

V-Log and V-Gamut Capture

Combining Panasonic-developed V-Log and V-Gamut, the EVA1 can capture a wide exposure latitude and represent a wide color palette. V-Log has exposure curve characteristics that are somewhat reminiscent of negative film, while V-Gamut delivers a color space even larger than film. Having both tools enables the EVA1 to be used in production workflows for both HDR and SDR production.

Native EF Lens Mount

Panasonic chose the EF lens mount to enable shooters to natively use the broad EF lens ecosystem, encompassing many brands of lenses. The lens mount features electronic contacts for communication with compatible lenses and enables one-push autofocus.

Electronic Image Stabilization

The EVA1 can electronically compensate for vibrations induced by shooting handheld or shoulder-mounted. This feature is especially useful for documentarians and other shooters that employ the run-and-gun style.

Integrated Motorized Filters

Available in 2, 4, and 6 stops, the built-in ND filter wheel enables the camera operator to have precise control over their image. If you wish to open up your lens while maintaining a set shutter speed, the ND filters can help reduce the exposure to retain your image's highlights. The IR-cut filter can also be actuated electronically, allowing for night vision and unique photographic effects.

SD Card Recording

Proprietary media can be expensive, but the EVA1 uses relatively affordable SDXC memory to record video. V60-rated SD cards support all internal recording modes, including the 10-bit 4:2:2 4K modes. Having dual card slots means you can continuously record from card to card, or record to both cards simultaneously for a backup.

Recording Modes

The EVA1 can record in several formats and compression rates, and offers up to 10-bit 4:2:2 sampling, even at 4K resolutions. For in-camera recording, you can capture in SDI 4K (4096 x 2160), UHD 4K (3840 x 2160), 2K (2048 x 1080), Full HD (1920 x 1080), and HD (1280 x 720). For high-speed capture, the EVA1 offers up to 59.94 fps for 4K, up to 120 fps for 2K and Full HD, or 240 fps with an image sensor crop.

I/O

On the body of the camera you'll find dual balanced XLR audio inputs for professional shotgun microphones, lavalier microphones, and line outputs. The HDMI and SDI video outputs are 4K-capable and can each be adjusted separately, allowing for HD to be fed to a viewfinder or other third-party monitor while 4K is sent to an outboard recorder or monitor. The camera is also equipped with standard timecode functionality.

Included Battery and Charger

Bundled with the EVA1 is the AG-VBR59 battery, which should give approximately an hour and a half of continuous operating time and a charge time of approximately 3 hours and 20 minutes. Optional separately available VBR batteries can extend the runtime of this camera.

Built-In Monitoring Tools

As a professional video production tool, the EVA1 contains several professional imaging tools including Peaking, Expand (Image Zoom), Waveform, Zebras, and Spotmeter (Y-Get). The EVA1 also utilizes Focus Squares, a feature originally found in the VariCam line which displays an array of green squares that grow in size when their local area appears to be sharp, enabling shooters to achieve critical focus.

Best Super35mm camera under $10k

This is the best Super35mm cinema camera under $10k. Amazing image quality, beautiful color, great and useful codecs and ProRes and raw output when needed. Beautiful image - I've used the FS7, FS5, C200, and C300II and this is a combination of my favorite form factor and image. Nice work, Panasonic. At its new lower price, it really is a steal. Just make sure to get an external monitor (the Shinobi or Focus or Swit 55-C are all good options and won't add much to the cost of the cmaera).

I purchased a EVA1 several months ago for a documentary project that we have been working on and have not been disappointed. My previous camera was a fs7 mkI and while it had a fantastic feature set it lacked one simple thing, a good look out of camera. The EVA1 delivers that with its VLOG profile. Skin tones look fantastic, highlights are clean and creamy. Its very easy to grade and finesse in to where you like it, honestly its one of the best log profiles I have ever used. Besides the look, the camera is very lightweight and easy to use. In cine mode you can use the home screen to quick switch between almost every major feature on the camera and the button placement is pretty straightforward. Completely kitted out the camera weighs well under 10lbs and can be stripped down to a kit less than 5lbs for gimbal use. Thats a pretty big deal for a full featured camera like this one. In comparison my old fs7 when built out weighed close to 14lbs. Picking the right SD card for this camera is crucial, you have to get a v90 card. I have had some of the cheaper brands fail on me when using 400mbs. GET THE SONY TOUGH V90 CARDS. They are worth every penny, dead reliable and almost unbreakable. Finally my biggest gripe about the camera. The on-board screen is, as you might expect, not great. Its bright enough for indoor use but as soon as you step outside you cant see a thing. I ended up getting a Atomos Shinobi for the camera and love it, makes a world of a difference when using the camera in any environment. The on-board screen does make a nice quick access point for your home screen menu which is what I have mine permanently set to atm. Overall I would say that this camera offers the best bang for your buck when comparing it to other cameras that offer similar features (fs7mkII, c200, c300mkII). At the end of the day the best camera is the one that you can use effectively.

I attended a Panasonic cinematographers round table in Hollywood that tipped me over the edge on this camera. That, along with the significant price cut. Was previously considering the UMP and C200.  The EVA1 is a versatile camera that suits my documentary style of shooting well. Pairs great with Lumix GH cameras for B and C cams. So far it has been a workhorse on two docs, and a reality show. Definitely recommend the Zacuto Z-Finder, as the comments are true, the LCD screen is pretty much useless in direct sunlight. Will likely pick up a Shogun next to take advantage of the 5.7K for commercial and narrative work.

Fantastic little camera

This is my 2nd review for the Eva1. Ive posted the first review a while back when I had one Eva and only done one job with it. Well now I own two of these babies and they have been working non stop. This camera is fantastic for the price. Beautiful color palette, great low light performance, lightweight and easy to use. Ive shot docudramas for TV, commercials, corporate and web content and the clients love the results. Sure there are some drawbacks like the flimsy handle or the LCD, but for me its been an absolute workhorse. I even shot a side by side test against an Arri Amira and only my veteran DIT could tell the minimal difference between them. Love it!

Not perfect but outstanding for the price

Ive owned two of these cameras now for over a year and they have been hard at work. Love the image quality and skin tone it produces...love the dual ISO which is a life saver at low light situations...love the easy menu, EF mount, lightweight, SD cards. Sure the LCD is useless but if you are a pro you need a good viewfinder anyway... other complaints about not being to record at this quality with that bit rate well guess what, many people wont need 60 frames 4K at 10bit and if you get it with another camera you will lose something else... they ALL have flaws at this price range. This camera makes sense and performs beautifully on my projects. Clients are HAPPY and coming back for more... these have been a purchase for me.

great camera price/peformance value

My Sony FS5 has served me well, but I frequently had issues grading Sony color science and noisy S-Log recordings. As I also own a Pany GH5, I decided to use the EVA1 as my A camera, and find it was a good move. I much prefer Panasonic color science, have less noise issues with V-Log, better codec options, RAW output, and a few other features that make the EVA1 a substantial step up at a moderate cost. The (very) weak spots of the EVA1 are the mirror-like reflective screen (useless outdoors) and lack of an EVF (an odd omission, considering the highly reflective screen). If you are considering this camera, you WILL want to budget for at least a high quality 5 monitor. Its a pity that Panasonic took so long to bring this camera out. Had they done so a couple years earlier, the EVA1 would be a more widely regarded camera. Consequently, the EVA1 is not on many production company's short list of preferred cameras, but the results often convince producers that it is very capable. No camera is perfect, but in the crowded sub-$10K range of cameras, I feel the EVA1 stands out nicely.

I come from FS7/RED DSMC2 recently into the world of Panasonic. This camera does everything I need. Dual native ISO. RAW or Prores HQ via SDI to Atomos Inferno, hi resolution, 14 stops of dynamic range, great skin tones and a large colour gamut, it's modular - can be mounted on a gimbal if stripped down or built up into a large rig (and bonus, I get timecode without the need for that ridiculous Sony back). What I really love is that storage is so super cheap. I can go to an SD card or to and SSD via Inferno. $100 for 500 GB. I won't tell you what I spend on RED media. In the end it's about two things: the user experience (which is great) and the results on screen (which can look filmic in the right hands). This camera would be so much more popular if everyone didn't already own an FS7. It's sure as heck a lot more fun to own than my RED was. If Atomos ever gets the new Braw implemented, this thing will be a beast. Drawbacks: the LCD is laughably horrid. ND options are limited. Do also buy: top plate with monitor holder for Atomos Inferno. Shoulder rig. EVF.

Panasonic makes announcements regarding cameras and their general specifications leaving the details for later. We would expect the dynamic range with V Log to be similar to the VariCam. As to the other details we will have to wait and see.

Sorry, no, the batteries for the HVX200 will not work. Batteries made for the DVX200 can work however. This would be the one to consider since it is the longest lasting. Panasonic 7.28V 86Wh Battery for DVX200 (11,800mAh) B&H # PAAGVBR118.
