Godox AD200 Overview

  • 1Description

The AD200 TTL Pocket Flash Kit from Godox is built around a unique flash light source that has a standard speedlite head and a bare bulb head that give you the option of 2 distinctly different qualities of light. The kit comes with the 2 heads, lithium battery, charger and carry case.

The speedlight head outputs the standard look of an on-camera flash that can be modified using an optional softbox, beauty dish or umbrella. The bare bulb head features a removable flash tube and produces 360 degrees of soft, bright, nearly shadowless light. The head uses optional reflectors that focus the beam angle and give you directional control. The AD200 has impressive core features such as 200 Ws of power adjustable in 8 steps from 1/128 to 1/1, recycling from 0.01 to 2.1 seconds and flash durations as short as 1/11,300 sec. The flash runs on a removal rechargeable lithium battery that will give you up to 500 full power flashes and thousands of lower power flashes.

The AD200 has 3 flash modes: Manual, TTL, and Multi (Stroboscopic). Manual outputs the user's choice of power, modeling light, first or second curtain sync, etc. Multi controls the stroboscopic rate up to 90 times (90 Hz). TTL takes advantage of the flash head's built-in X1 receiver. Optional X1 TTL transmitters are available for Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus, Panasonic and Fuji cameras. They will also detect a separately purchased LED head. The 32-channel wireless system controls flash mode, first and second curtain sync, High-speed sync up to 1/8000 sec, power level, modeling lamp and ready beeper at distances up to 328'. Firmware updates are obtainable on the Godox website.

    Godox AD200 Reviews

AD200 TTL Pocket Flash Kit is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 50.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for bad timing on wedding portraits As a wedding photographer, sometimes I do not get a choice of when and where I can take bridal portraits. With this flash, I don't have to worry about situations where the ambient is simply too bright for an ordinary speedlite. Now I can avoid blown out backgrounds when the bride wants that background for a reason.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Happy Wow, such an upgrade from a standard flash! So much more light, so many more possibilities! I love the bare bulb in a softbox, it seems to create a much smoother light on the whole surface. I don't like the umbrella bracket that comes with it. It sucks. No tension screw for the umbrella - it was completely useless, but I took a cheap amazon umbrella bracket, removed the flash bracket which left a 1/4-20 stud on the bracket. I screwed that into AD200 and was in business. I can see myself adding 1-2 more of these to my bag. Speaking of bag, I love the carry case that comes with it. Very well done, and keeps it projected from drops.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great option to pair with my AD600BM. - Bare Bulb - I am a little bit disappointed with it because there is no modeling light as found on the AD600. I believe Godox has not included that feature on this bare bulb because of its size, but there are low energy consumption high output LEDs available that could be easily incorporated into the bare bulb design. - Speedlight Head - On the other hand, GODOX has included the modeling light option on this head, but no intensity control is available. The light output is enough to use in day light when you need a fill light. - White Balance - Bare Bulb ended up being a bit more to the hot side and the Speedlight head to the cooler blue spectrum. I don't venture to guess the Kelvin values for each one of them, but you will find those differences with a naked eye. - Battery Life - Again GODOX knocked it out of the park. A full charge will hold up to your session with no problems - Wireless Connectivity - It works seamlessly with my 2.4 GHz X1 radio. My setup consists in three AD600BM and two newly added AD200. - TTL Function - I shoot in manual mode. I tried the TTL a couple of times, and it seems to do a great job for who is looking for a more point and shoot kind of situation. - Sturdy Construction - When you first open the box and grab the unit, you feel a solid piece of reliable equipment. - Back LCD and controls - Very easy to use, fast access to the parameters. You will never touch it if you are using the X1. - Included Case - I am a very organized person, so having the case with compartments to keep everything safe and organized is a great addition to the value. I hope you guys can get something out of my overall review, Best SLR

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Will buy another one soon Bought to take family photos and photos for a Sports Clothes client. Everything is just great though i used only two times. Light weight, perfect to travel and carry on a back pack. Used for family photos and martial arts shooting, so i had to use the high speed synch. Recicle time just worked well. Much better than my Canon Flashes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this light! Killed with user error, buying the next! This light is beyond fantastic! Plenty of power in an absurdly small and lightweight package. It may sound odd to be giving it a five star review after I managed to kill mine in 6 months, but it's been an insane 6 months and I've gotten WAY more than $300 of value out of this light. I started off being really precious with it but then my wedding season kicked in and pretty soon it felt like the light was getting blown over and hitting the dirt at every wedding (totally on me, If you sandbag stands and don't put it in insane places this thing will probably live forever) but I love to be really mobile while shooting and in this case the light was the casualty required to get the shot... ...all summer. After performing wonderfully for an entire season of shoots and getting bounced against the ground as often as a crash test dummy (sorry godox) it finally gave up the ghost at yesterdays wedding when a particularly strong gust of wind knocked over its 10' stand I had precariously wedged between some rocks on uneven ground. One note on performance: I love to shoot with High Speed Sync and from reading around in forums I found out that the light has a "dumb" counter that tells the light to drastically restrict recycle because it's overheating even though on careful inspection the light hasn't gotten warm yet. Turning the light off and turning it back on again allows you to get past the safety in a critical situation and continue shooting so that your client doesn't wonder why you're making up songs to get your light to fire. I'm sure had I taken reasonable care of this amazing unit I wouldn't be back here to purchase another but I can say for a fact that several of the most exciting portfolio shots from this summer wouldn't have been possible and my back would hurt even more than it already does from lugging heavier stands and sandbags up the side of mountains. I'm going to try to treat this one better but in closing and as an obituary to my first light: Thanks for the memories and I'm sorry knocked you on every rock in Oregon all summer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Off camera mini strobe for easy portability I've now got two of these and also bought the AD-B2 bracket and spare bulbs and a cover for that. The fun thing is that they'll take anything from very light weight attachments that fit over the bare bulb on the bare bulb head (12 inch beauty dish, 5 inch reflector) and can be held with one arm out while shooting with the other hand or can be mounted in brackets that fit on light stands and which give better support than the included umbrella bracket. On brackets, they can be used with at least anything up to a 45 inch umbrella or a 48 inch folding octabox (I have the Westcott Octa XXL, which I've reviewed elsewhere). They're radio or optical slave only, and I use mine with a X1t-S transmitter mounted on my camera hot shoe. The various Godox shoeflashes in the 2.4 MHtz range can serve at either radio transmitters or receivers. The larger ones work optically as well (I've used a TT685 S optically with a Nissin i40). One of these gives more power than a shoe-mount flash, but not as much as a 600 w/s flash. The ability to have it handheld either by the photographer or by another person is perhaps its best feature. Can serve as a key light with an on-camera fill flash quite handily. I had leather slip cases made for it locally (I live in Nicaragua) to fit the AD200 with the fresnel head. I would recommend getting a bulb cover for the bare bulb head. Other tip with the bare bulb head is to leave the side screw unscrewed unless you're mounting accessories over the bulb. The bulb is better left in the head. I bought two additional bulbs and a cover for the AD-B2. Buy a pair and the AD-B2 with two additional bulbs. You can use either one alone, the pair as separate lights in separate groups, or the pair without the heads in the AD-B2 mount. One thing that would be worth having would be a wrist strap that screwed into one of the mounting holes.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quality control I bought 2 ad200 last week, one worked fine, the other one stopped working during a photo session with less than 100 shots, the flash seems to be ok, the bulb passed away... I never used it at maximum power shot in 1/1, most of the shots were in 1/32 and 3 or 4 photos by minute, so it was not forced, it just a poor quality control process by the manufacturer. i looked for info over the internet and it seems to be pretty usual, i mean there are several cases reported with the same bulb problem... This is the kind of problem that you find when you buy  cheap products, you never know when its going to stop working, its a kind of russian roulette, no doubt about it its a great deal for the price, but you never know. As i live in Chile i have no option for sending the bulb back to the states, so i had to bought 2 new bulbs in B and H and the cost was 100 bucks..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love these flashes! I have been using this flash for about a month now and have bought 2 more! They are great for off camera work (they don't have a hot shoe) with a remote trigger. I can adjust all the settings from the remote, including the modeling light. The refresh is so fast at the lower settings. It generally is too bright for full power, but even then the refresh is fast.

Hello, will the Godox AD200 work with the Yongnuo YN-E3-RT Wireless Speedlite Transmitter for Canon ?
    Asked by: Mark
Unfortunately no, the Godox radio system and Yongnuo system are each proprietary and not compatible with one another. They will both fit onto Canon flashes and cameras but they are not interchangeable. You would need to use all Godox transmitters and receivers or all Yongnuo with your flash system.

Can I plug a Pocket Wizard Plus 3 into the Godox ...

Can I plug a Pocket Wizard Plus 3 into the Godox AD200. Then place a second Pocket Wizard Plus 3 on my Canon DSLR camera. Will the flash fire if the shutter button is pressed on the camera?
    Asked by: Gary H. R.
Yes. If you wish, as the Godox AD200 TTL Pocket Flash has a 1/8" (3.5mm) sync terminal on the side of the flash unit, you may connect a PocketWizard Plus III Transceiver to the Godox AD200 TTL Pocket Flash using the standard PocketWizard MM1 Miniphone to Miniphone Cable -12" (B&H # WICMM16) included with the PocketWizard Plus III. You may then wirelessly trigger the flash by pressing the shutter button on your camera via a second PocketWizard transceiver connected to the hot shoe on your camera. Do note that you will have to set the flash output manually, as this setup would not provide TTL automatic flash exposure capability.

Can I use this with a Leica M240, I have a Pocket Wizard 2, could they be used to trigger the flash?
    Asked by: Robert U.
The Godox AD200 TTL Pocket FlashGodox AD200 TTL Pocket Flash has a 1/8 (3.5mm) sync terminal on the side of the flash unit. As such, and as the Leica M (Typ 240) Digital Rangefinder Camera has a standard ISO hot shoe, you may use the PocketWizard Plus II Transceiver with both items for your wireless triggering needs. You would place one of the PocketWizard Plus II Transceiver in the camera's hot shoe, and you may connect the second PocketWizard Plus II Transceiver to the Godox AD200 TTL Pocket Flash via the PocketWizard MM1 Miniphone to Miniphone Cable -12 , B&H # WICMM16. If both remotes are set to the same channel, when you press the shutter button on your camera, it will wirelessly trigger the Godox AD200 TTL Pocket Flash simultaneously.
